🔆Kopili fault zone

Recently, researchers from the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) have identified seismogenic liquefaction features in the active Kopili Fault (KF) zone.
It is a 300 km long and 50 km wide lineament situated in the northeastern region (NER) of India.
It extends from the western part of Manipur to the tri-junction of Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam.
It is closer to Himalayan Frontal Thrust.
This is a seismically active area falling in the highest Seismic Hazard Zone V.
It is associated with collisional tectonics because of the Indian Plate subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate.
The fault itself is a transpressional fracture that generates lower crustal dextral strike-slip earthquakes.
A tectonic depression filled up by the alluvium of the Kopili river and its tributaries, the Kopili fault zone has witnessed many seismic activities in the past including the 1869 earthquake (7.8 magnitude) and the 1943 earthquake (7.3 magnitude).

🔆Bohai Gulf

UNESCO recently inscribed China's Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf (Phase II) to its World Heritage List.

📍Bohai Gulf:

It is the innermost gulf of the Yellow Seaon the coast of Northeastern and North China.
It is sometimes called Bohai Sea, or Bo Hai for short; in earlier times it was called the Gulf of Chili or the Gulf of Pechili.
It is approximately 78,000 sq.km in area, and its proximity to Beijing, the capital of China, makes it one of the busiest seaways in the world.
The Bohai Gulf is enclosed by the Liaodong Peninsula(northeast) and the Shandong Peninsula (south).
Among the most important cities on the Bohai Gulf are Dalian and Tianjin; its shores form three of the most famous bays in the country: Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, and Laizhou Bay.
The Yellow River, China’s second longest river, discharges into the gulf.
There are both onshore and offshore petroleum deposits, and several oil refineries are located there as well as other industries.

🔆Line of Actual Control (LAC)

The LAC is the demarcation that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory.
India considers the LAC to be 3,488 km long, while the Chinese consider it to be only around 2,000 km.
It is divided into three sectors:
🔸 the eastern sector which spans Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim;
🔸 the middle sector in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh,and;
🔸 the western sector in Ladakh.
LAC in the eastern sector consisting of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim is called the McMahon Line which is 1,140 km long.
Major friction points along the India-China border
🔸 Depsang Plains: This area is located in the northernmost part of Ladakh and has seen incursions by Chinese troops in the past.
🔸 Demchok: This area is located in eastern Ladakh and has seen disputes over the boundary between India and China.
🔸Pangong Lake: This area has been a major flashpoint between the two countries, with Chinese troops attempting to change the status quo on the LAC in the region.
🔸 Gogra and Hot Springs: These two areas are located in eastern Ladakh and have seen standoffs between Indian and Chinese troops in recent years.
🔸 Arunachal Pradesh: This northeastern Indian state is claimed by China as part of its territory and has been a major point of contention between the two countries.
How is the LAC different from the Line of Control with Pakistan?
🔸The LoC emerged from the 1948 ceasefire line negotiated by the UN after the Kashmir War.
🔸 It was designated as the LoC in 1972, following the Shimla Agreement between the two countries. It is delineated on a map signed by DGMOs of both armies and has the international sanctity of a legal agreement.
🔸 The LAC, is only a concept and it is not agreed upon by the two countries, neither delineated on a map or demarcated on the ground.

🔆Cloud-seeding

It is a weather modification technique used to induce artificial rainfall by introducing chemical “nuclei” like silver iodide, potassium iodide, dry ice, or liquid propane into pre-existing clouds.
These chemicals help moisture in the air condense, accelerating rainfall.
Types of Cloud-Seeding:
🔸Hygroscopic: Uses salt particles to accelerate droplet formation in liquid clouds.
🔸Glaciogenic: Uses silver iodide or dry ice to induce ice formation in supercooled clouds.
Implementation: India: Attempted in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra for drought relief.
Global: Used in Australia, America, Spain, France, UAE, and Russia.
Effectiveness: Effectiveness and environmental impact are debated, with experts citing the need for more research.
🔸Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology reported a 60-70% success rate in inducing rain.
🔸But there are concerns about the environmental impact of silver iodide.
Therefore cloud seeding has seen varying degrees of success and requires specific atmospheric conditions to be effective.

🔆Dead Sea

The Dead Sea, also known as the Salt Sea, is a saline lake in southwestern Asialocated between Jordan and Israel.
It lies to the east of the Mediterranean Sea and south of the Sea of Galilee.
It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.
It is deepest Hypersaline Lake in the world.
To the west of the Dead Sea, the Judaean Mountains rise less steeply and are much lower than the mountains to the East.
It is located at an elevation of 5 meters below sea level, making it the Earth’s lowest land-based feature.
Salinity: The Dead Sea is one of the Earth’s saltiest water bodies, almost ten times saltier than ordinary seawaters. It has a salinity of 34.2%.
It is the fourth saltiest body of water in the world, ranking behind Antarctica’s Don Juan Pond and Lake Vanda, and Djibouti’s Lake Assal.
The Dead Sea has one main inlet (the Jordan River) but does not have an outlet and so loses its water mainly through evaporation.
The high saline level and the harsh climate make the lake devoid of life, except for algae and other microorganisms.
It has a density of 1.240 kg/L, which makes swimming in its waters similar to floating.

🔆Black Hole

It is a region in space with such strong gravity that nothing, not even light, can escape from it. According to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, a black hole is created when a large mass becomes very compact, bending spacetime. The boundary of no return is called the event horizon.
Types: There are four main types of black holes:
🔸Stellar Black Holes: Formed by collapsing stars.
🔸Intermediate Black Holes: Larger than stellar but smaller than supermassive.
🔸Supermassive Black Holes (SMBH): The largest type, found at the centers of galaxies, like Sagittarius A* in our galaxy.
Micro Black Holes: Very small, hypothetical black holes, proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1971.
Black holes form when a massive star runs out of fuel. Stars shine because of nuclear fusion, which pushes outward against gravity. But when a star exhausts its fuel, this outward pressure stops, and gravity takes over, causing the star to collapse.

During recent conservation efforts, epigraphists from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) uncovered a Telugu inscription on the wall above the statue of Lord Hanuman at the 13th-century Simhachalam temple.

Simhachalam Temple, originally known as Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, is a Hindu temple located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

It is dedicated to the incarnation (avatar) of Vishnu known as Narasimha
(the man-lion).

It was constructed in the 11th century by the Gajapati rulers of Odisha.

Kulottunga Chola I of Tamilnadu, made endowments to this temple, as evidenced from inscriptions dating back to the year 1087.

The Vengi Chalukyas of Andhra Pradesh renovated the original shrine in the 11th century.

🔆Brahmi Inscription

Recently, a Brahmi inscription was found in Dharanikota village at Amaravathi mandal in Palnadu district. The script on the inscription is written in the Prakrit language and Brahmi characters of the 2nd century C.E.

📍Brahmi Inscription:

The Brahmi script is the earliest writing system developed in India after the Indus script.
It is one of the most influential writing systems; all modern Indian scripts and several hundred scripts found in Southeast and East Asia are derived from Brahmi.
Most examples of Brahmi found in North and Central India represent the Prakrit language.
The earliest known Brahmi inscriptions are from the edicts of Ashoka, the third Mauryan emperor of Magadha who ruled most of the sub-continent between 268 and 232 BCE.
Traces of the script have been discovered not just in the Gangetic plains but also in excavated sites in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka, mostly on pottery shards.

🔆Chikungunya

It is a viral diseasetransmitted to humans through the bites of mosquitoes infected with the chikungunya virus.
The word comes from the African Makonde language and means "bent over in pain."

📍Transmission:
It is most commonly transmitted by mosquitoes, Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti and Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus, which can also transmit dengue and Zika viruses.
It is not spread from person to person.
It was first described during an outbreak in southern Tanzania in 1952 and has now been identified in nearly 40 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas

📍Symptoms:
Symptoms usually begin 4 to 8 days after a mosquito bite but can appear anywhere from 2 to 12 days.
The most common symptom is an abrupt onset of fever, often accompanied by joint pain
Other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rash.
Serious complications are uncommon, but atypical severe cases can cause long-term symptoms and even death, especially in older people.

📍Treatment:
There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatmentfor chikungunya virus infections.
The goal of treatment for the infection is to relieve symptoms with rest, fluids and drugs.

🔆Harappan civilisation

The Harappan civilisation was first brought to light on September 20, 1924, with the publication of an article in The Illustrated London News by John Marshall, the then Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

This civilisation, also known as the Indus Valley Civilisation, is celebrated for its advanced town planning, water harvesting, metallurgy, and pottery making.

Two ASI archaeologists, Daya Ram Sahni and Rakhal Das Banerji, were instrumental in the discovery of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro respectively, both now in Pakistan.

Significant sites include Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, Ganweriwala, Rakhigarhi, and Dholavira.

The Harappan civilisation’s most characteristic features included the developed Indus script, standardised measures, burnt brick construction, and exquisite lapidary art.

Historian Vincent Smith noted that the discovery of this civilisation pushed back the antiquity of settled life in South Asia by more than 3,000 years.
