Last winter, I mentioned that my 10 hens were laying 9 eggs a day in the winter and people's amazement made me realize that a post about chicken nutrition would be helpful ☕️
I've always suspected that chickens who have given up on laying aren't being provided with enough nutrition (and this was confirmed when I was given 3 hens who were "too old to lay" — who became *daily* layers with sufficient feed).
A common belief is that "chickens stop laying in the winter because days are shorter". The alternative theory is that chickens will leave off laying eggs in the winter because they have a calorie deficit.
Chickens use more calories in the winter to keep themselves warm and to grow more feathers. Farmers who don't increase their feed (especially farmers who rely heavily on free ranging since free ranging is harder in the winter for chickens), will find that their chickens just don't have enough nutrition to keep laying eggs.
Feed your chickens more :) and see if you start getting eggs again!

From last year. For educational purposes. Do not replicate...... The use of boobytraps as an area denial tool should not be underestimated in the modern age. From ancient times up to the GWOT era, traps have been used by defending forces to slow, maim, and mentally drain a invading force. Even just one successfully placed trap can slow an enemies advance thru a area, because simply put nobody wants to be the first to walk into an area that is known to have traps in it.

Today we remember one of the last Great American presidents: John F Kennedy.
On November 22, 1963, while touring the state of Texas, he would be assassinated by known Soviet agent, Lee Harvey Oswald.
