A Scholar per excellence!
Myself, Ustādh Ma'arūf (Ibn Hajar ) and Oniyawo meta of Ad-da'watu An-nabawiyyah Abū Mardiyy Kewudirorun started our journey of seeking for Scholars who are well grounded in the knowledge of Hadīth around Southwest Nigeria almost a decade ago.
We set forth on the journey through referrals from some teachers of Sunnah. We also took time to visit some Scholars during the journey.
We were fortunate to meet with some teachers...Maa Shaa Allaah...BaarokaLlaahu feehim.
However, we realized that our personal efforts in the knowledge of Hadīth coupled with our background knowledge were at a par level with what those teachers knew and perhaps even more (this is not a boast but a gratitude to Allāh... AlhamduliLlaah).
The zeal to quench our thirst for the knowledge of Hadīth became fulfilled after Ustādh Ma'arūf mentioned Shaykh Al-Muhaddith Abū Taymiyyah AbduLlāh Aliyy Jabata to us.
Fortunately, we were able to seal a class session with Shaykh AbduLlāh Jabata in his residence at Lagos.
Due to the strong zeal of Ustādh Ma'arūf, he had started to benefit from Shaykh before we even started the class session. He is a very strong student of Hadīth - Maa Shaa Allaah wa BaarokaLlaahu feeh.
I remembered telling someone who asked after Ustādh Ma'arūf from me on him taking knowledge from him; I simply told him:
لا يسأل عن مثله
Someone like him is trustworthy in his knowledge beyond asking about him.
Eventually, we started the Hadīth class and we realized how much more of the knowledge in its oceanic form that we still have to acquire.
He is indeed a grounded teacher in the knowledge of Hadīth. Like Ustādh Abū Khadījah As-sanadiy do say that:
الشيخ عبد الله بن علي جبتا هو محدث شئتم أم أبيتم...
Shaykh AbduLlāh Aliyy Jabata is a Scholar of Hadīth - whether you accept or disagree.
I also do say to my own students regarding Shaykh AbduLlāh Jabata that:
هو فتح لنا بعد فتح مكة
He is a conquest (for us) on the knowledge of Hadīth after the conquest of Makkah.
May Allāh bless him, grant him more righteous life and bless his household.
