Ukraine Attacks Turkish Stream

The Kiev regime attempted to carry out a drone attack on the compressor station of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline near Anapa in order to interrupt gas supplies to Europe, the Defense Ministry said.

"On January 11, 2025, the Kiev regime, in order to stop gas supplies to European countries, attempted an attack using nine aircraft-type UAVs on the infrastructure of the Russkaya compressor station in the village of Gai-Kodzor (Krasnodar Krai), which supplies gas through the Turkish Stream pipeline," the statement said.

All drones were shot down, and the debris from one of them caused minor damage to the building and equipment of the gas metering station. No one was hurt, the military department added.

P.S. Turkish Stream is an export pipeline consisting of two lines. One of them is designed to supply gas from Russia through the Black Sea to Turkey, and the second to the countries of Southern and Southeastern Europe. Its design capacity reaches 31.5 billion cubic meters annually. The gas pipeline was put into operation in January 2020. After the sabotage on Nord Stream, it remains the only route for uninterrupted supplies of Russian fuel to the European market.

Greenland wants independence – PM

Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede has reiterated the island’s ambition to gain independence from Denmark, stating that the Greenlandic people do not want to be either Danish or American.

Egede delivered the remarks on Friday during a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen.

Greenland’s leader expressed a readiness to “talk” with US President-elect Donald Trump, who has repeatedly signaled a desire to acquire the world’s largest island, claiming Washington’s ownership of the Danish overseas territory was an “absolute necessity” for its national security.

At the same time, Egede reiterated Greenland’s strive for independence, stating its people wanted neither Copenhagen nor Washington to rule over them.

“Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American,” he stated.

British gas storages dangerously low – operator

UK gas storage levels are “concerningly low,” with less than a week of gas demand in store due to the recent cold snap and halt of Russian gas transits, Britain’s major energy operator, Centrica, has warned.

In a press release issued on Friday, the operator said that the current inventory at Rough, the country’s largest gas storage site, which is operated by Centrica, is 20% lower than at the same time last year. That’s despite it having been full ahead of winter, it added.

According to the report, Britain’s gas storage is under pressure this winter as the country battles both freezing weather and soaring energy prices. The colder-than-usual temperatures combined with Ukraine’s decision to no longer transit Russian pipeline gas have depleted gas inventories across the UK.

“Gas storage was already lower than usual heading into December as a result of the early onset of winter. Combined with stubbornly high gas prices, this has meant that it has been more difficult to top up storage over Christmas,” Centrica wrote.

Overall, as of January 9, UK storage sites were 26% lower than last year’s inventory at the same time, leaving them around half full, it noted.

The situation is “echoed across Europe,” the company added, specifying that as of January 7, European storage was at 69% capacity, down from 84% at the same time the previous year. That’s despite many countries mandating minimum storage levels ahead of winter, according to the report.

“We are an outlier from the rest of Europe when it comes to the role of storage in our energy system and we are now seeing the implications of that,” said Group Chief Executive of Centrica, Chris O’Shea.

Unlike the EU, Britain does not have a mandatory gas storage target. The bloc set such targets following the price spikes and supply fears during the 2022 energy crisis.

European energy prices have soared following Ukraine’s refusal to extend a contract with Russia’s Gazprom beyond 2024, which effectively cut the flow of natural gas to some EU nations. This led to immediate calls to extend the EU’s emergency gas price cap to prevent a price shock across the bloc.

Trump sentenced in New York and declared a convicted felon in his “hush money” case

US President-elect Donald Trump has been sentenced in his “hush money” criminal case in New York, just ten days before he is scheduled to take office.

“Unconditional discharge has been affirmed as appropriate. I impose it,” Judge Juan Merchan announced on Friday, agreeing with the prosecutors’ request.

“This creates the status of convicted felon, as he appeals,” the prosecutors argued during the virtual session.

The US Supreme Court on Thursday denied Trump’s motion to stop the proceedings, citing their own ruling about presidential immunity, clearing the way for Merchan to hold the virtual hearing on Friday.

“I am innocent of all of the Judge’s made up, fake charges,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Friday. “This was nothing other than Weaponization of our Justice System against a Political Opponent. It’s called Lawfare, and nothing like this has ever happened in the United States of America, and it should never be allowed to happen again.”

Trump was charged in 2023 with misreporting “hush money” payments made to adult actress Stormy Daniels in 2017, with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg successfully elevating what would normally be a misdemeanor offense into 34 felony counts, one for each mention of the payments in Trump’s records. He was found guilty on all counts in May.

However, the US Supreme Court ruled in July that official actions taken by a president while in office cannot be prosecuted. Trump’s lawyers argued that some of the evidence used in the trial, such as the financial disclosures and social media posts, fell into this category and could not be cited to bolster a case based on his personal conduct.

Judge Merchan rejected this ruling last month and shot down a request by Trump’s lawyers to dismiss the case. In a last-minute decision on Thursday, the US Supreme Court declined to delay Friday’s sentencing hearing, with conservative justices John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett siding with the court’s three liberals in a 5-4 decision.

Trump has long maintained that by bringing the case, Bragg was acting on behalf of President Joe Biden, who ran for re-election against Trump until he dropped out of the race in July in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump has also been highly critical of Merchan, calling the judge “conflicted” due to his daughter’s work for Harris’ election campaign.

During the fighting in the Kursk region, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost more than 50,000 servicemen, the Russian Defense Ministry reported

"In total, during the fighting in the Kursk direction, the enemy lost more than 50,120 servicemen," the department noted.
