همونطور که از معنی پیداست، بار منفی داره کمی. بنابراین باید به کسی گفته بشه که با او شوخی داریم. یا وقتی که عصبانی هستیم از نگرفتن یک مطلب توسط یک نفر و میخواهیم اعصاب خردی خودمان را نشان بدهیم.

یعنی جبرانی.

ولی وقتی با فعل گذشته استفاده میشه، یعنی ساختگی. الکی. دروغ.

Don't believe him. He made it all up about being stuck in traffic. He just forgot (his appointment with you).

Many parents tell their kids with a straight face the made-up story of Santa Claus bringing kids presents on Christmas Eve.

بنابراین کاربرد اصطلاح، لزوما جنگی و نیروی زمینی ارتش نیست.

گوشه ذهنت باشه. فعلا دست نگه دار. در وقت آزادت روش کار کن. مدتی کار روی این رو متوقف کنیم.

Air quotes

گیومه‌ای که با انگشتان در هوا نشان می‌دهند. الکی. وقتی چیزی رو میگیم ولی منظورمون برعکسه. یا مثلا یک صفتی که بعضیها به کسی نسبت میدن، ولی ما عقیده‌ای بهش نداریم.

I couldn't solve the puzzle and he said I was a "genius", using air quotes.

She said he won "fair and square" in air quotes.

در ضمن
fair and square
یعنی عادلانه. بدون تقلب.

They say Chicago has the "best" pizza.

این قضیه زیر، نشان از خیلی خارجکی بودن من داره، یا نشان از عوارض پیری، یا اصلا کلا خلاص بودن از نعمت عقل؟ 🤦🏻‍♂️😁

در جواب یکی از دوستان که از هوش مصنوعی یک سوال پرسیده بود، یه توضیحی دادم، و آخرش نوشتم هوش مصنوعی «یه جوابی داده که نه سیر بسوزه، نه پیاز». بعد فکر کردم چه اصطلاح عجیبی تو فارسی استفاده می‌کنیم! یعنی چی نه سیر بسوزه نه پیاز؟؟ بعد از یک جستجوی ساده اینترنتی، فهمیدم کی خره! 😅

اگه در جملات بالا موردی بود که توضیح خواستید، خوشحال میشم توضیح بدم.

Cut the ground from under (someone)
فرش رو از زیر پای کسی کشیدن. ضربه غافلگیر زدن. (تقریبا) زیر آب زدن.
I plan to cut the ground from under the prosecutor with this line of questioning.

We need to be a united front when we're with the kids. You can't cut the ground from under me like that.


drive/run/work yourself/something into the ground
یک چیزی رو خیلی بد مدیریت کردن و از بین بردنش. خود را با کار زیادی به خستگی مفرط و مریضی کشاندن. یک بحثی را لوث کردن.
If you keep working 80-hour weeks, you'll drive yourself into the ground sooner than later.

Doing something religiously
معنی لغویش یعنی از نظر دینی، ولی بیشتر به معنی خیلی با نظم و مرتب و سفت و سخت یک کاری رو انجام دادن است.

ولی معنی‌ای که مد نظر ما هست، در جملاتی شبیه این به کار میره (این جمله زیر هم از همان منبع)

یعنی خیلی مرتب این سریال تلویزیونی رو میبینم و هیچ قسمتیش رو جا نمی‌اندازم.

Tone-deaf
معنی لغویش که میشه کسی که بعضی از فرکانسها و نتهای موسیقی رو نمیتونه بشنوه. ولی خیلی به عنوان استعاره استفاده میشه به عنوان کسی که تو باغ نیست راجع به احساسات بقیه. کسی که اصلا احساسات جمعی رو درک نمیکنه و نمیفهمه بقیه (یا شنونده ها) از موضوعی ناراحت هستند یا عصبانی هستند.

اصطلاح از سنت قدیمی یهودیان میاد. گناهانشون رو «منتقل میکردند» به یک بز، و از شهر فراریش میدادن که گناهانشون رو با خودش ببره.

این اصطلاح نیست ولی مفیده در محاوره:

چند روز پیش، به یادت بودم.

The other day
به معنی در آن روز نیست. یعنی چند روز پیش. چند وقت پیش.

و مثلا یک اتفاقی افتاده، که به شما فکر کرده و مثلا نگران شما بوده یا احساس همدردی کرده.

Think out loud
چیزهایی که به ذهن میرسد را گفتن. همینطوری که فکر میکنیم، به بقیه هم بگیم، قبل از اینکه افکارمون رو دسته بندی کنیم و نتیجه گیری منسجم کنیم. حدسیات و فرضیات اولیه را بیان کردن.

از یک چیزی سر در نیاوردن. مطلبی یا پروژه‌ای که مثل کلاف سر در گم شده. شبیه این دو اصطلاح است که قبلا بحث شده:

هم همان شیر یا خط خودمان است. این طرف سکه یا آن طرف سکه. وقتی هم میخوان به صورت اتفاقی (random) یک تصمیمی بگیرن، یکی سکه را می‌اندازه و به نفر دیگر می‌گوید

و اون نفر هم مثلا میگوید tails.

گول زدن مشتری با تبلیغ گمراه کننده که فکر کند جنس خوب و ارزان دارد می‌خرد، ولی یا جنس بنجل یا با قیمت بالاتر فروختن. غش در معامله. به هوای چیزی کسی را دعوت به شرکت در جلسه‌ای کردن، و مطلب دیگری را به خوردش دادن. در بیشتر مواقع، این کار غیر قانونی است و حقه بازی محسوب می‌شود.

The store had a big sign outside showing a huge discount for a large TV, but when I went in, they said that TV is no longer in stock, and instead offered a much more expensive TV. That’s clearly bait and switch, because they had not even mentioned limited supplies in the ad.

اوضاع دیگه بعد از اون، خراب شد. بدبختیها از اونجا شروع شد. ماه عسل تمام شد. مشکلات از اون لحظه به بعد شروع شد.
این دو اصطلاح زیر هم به همین معنی است:

که این آخری، اشاره به هواپیمایی است که دماغه اش به طرف پایین (سقوط) میرود.

جالبه که در (https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/things+went+south)، معنی اول یعنی مخفی شد (مثلا بعد از اینکه پلیس محل مخفی شدن رو پیدا کرده). این معنی رو تا حالا نشنیده‌ام. معنی دوم و سوم رو خیلی شنیده ام (که همینی است که در بالا گفتم).

دو معنی داره. یکیش یعنی "آره بابا! تجربه‌اش رو داشته‌ام". وقتی به کار میره که کسی پیشنهاد یک کاری رو میده که به نظر خودش جالبه، ولی شما اون کار رو قبلا انجام دادین و الان به نظرتون جالب نمیاد. یا مثلا وقتی کسی داره پز میده که من رفتم نیویورک، پارک مرکزی رو دیدم و به لاک پشتها دست زدم، شما در جواب این اصطلاح رو میگید که یعنی "حالا شاخ غول رو هم نشکستی. ما هم کرده‌ایم این کارها رو".
