🔘All📌

🔗1. All refers to three or more items. It is used mostly before plural and uncountable nouns.
All children need love.
◇I love all music.
All the invitees turned up.

■When all is followed by a plural noun, the verb is normally plural. After an uncountable noun, we use a singular verb.
All cheese contains fat.
All the lights were out.

All + noun is not normally used as the subject of a negative verb. We more often use the structure not all + noun + affirmative verb.
Not all birds can sing. (NOT All birds cannot sing.)

🔗2. All and All of

■Before a noun with no determiner (possessives, articles and demonstratives) we use all.
All children need love.
All cheese contains fat.
All lights were out.

■Before a noun with a determiner (the, my, this etc.), all and all of are both possible.
All the lights were out.
All of the lights were out.
◇I have invited all my friends to my birthday party.
◇I have invited all of my friends to my birthday party.

■Before a personal pronoun (us, them etc.) we useall of + object form.
All of us love music. (NOT All us love music)
◇I have invited all of them. (NOT I have invited all them.)

🔗3. All with nouns and pronouns

■All can modify nouns and pronouns. We normally place it before the noun/pronoun.
◇I have invited all (of) my friends.
All of us love music.
◇I love all of you.
All of us are going to the movies.

■We can put all after pronouns used as objects.
◇I love you all. (= I love all of you.)
◇Give my love to them all. (= Give my love to all of them.)
◇I have made you all something to eat. (= I have made all of you something to eat.)

○Note that all cannot be put after pronouns used as subject complements.
◇Is that all of them? (NOT Is that them all?)

🔗4. All with verbs

■When all refers to the subject of a clause, it can go with the verb.
When the verb consists of just one word, and that word is not a form of be (is, am, are, was, were), all is placed before the verb.
◇They all came. (All + other verb)
◇We all love music. (All + other verb)

■When the verb is a form of beall is placed after it.
◇You are all welcome. (be + all)
◇We were all invited. (be + all)

■When there are two auxiliary verbs, all goes after the first.
◇They have all gone home. (Auxiliary verb + all + other verb)
◇They have all been told. (Auxiliary verb + all + auxiliary verb + other verb)

○Note that these meanings can also be expressed by using all (of) + noun/pronoun.
♧All of them came.
♧All of us love music.
♧All of you are welcome.
♧All of us have been invited.
♧All of them have gone home.

📖 What is the simple difference between British, Briton and English when referring to people

🇬🇧 British is an adjective for someone who lives in Britain, consisting of England, Scotland and Wales. Some people would also argue that Northern Ireland is included, although technically it isn't.

🇬🇧 Briton is a noun for a British person. The Britons, also known as Celtic Britons or Ancient Britons, were Celtic people who inhabited Great Britain from the British Iron Age into the Middle Ages. It is often abbreviated nowadays to Brit. British expatriates living abroad are often referred to as either expats or Brits.

🇬🇧 English is an adjective for someone who lives in England. If a person is English then they are also British.

🕯 Britisher is a noun for a native or inhabitant of Britain. It is mainly used in the Indian subcontinent, having become popular there during the British Raj. Its use was once considered pejorative, but is now mostly considered jocular.

🔘ABBREVIATIONS📌

🔗1. A brief way of writing a word or a phrase that could also be written out in full, using only the letters of the alphabet and possibly full stops. We usually write abbreviations without full stops in British English. Full stops are normal in American English.

📝 Dr (US Dr.) for Doctor, Prof (US Prof.) for Professor and Capt (US Capt.) for Captain.

🔗2. An abbreviation does not normally have a distinct pronunciation of its own: we pronounce Dr as Doctor and e.g. as for example.

📝 Some abbreviations are made from the first letters of several words.
Examples are:

📝 The BBC - the British Broadcasting Corporation
UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

🔗3. Some initial-letter abbreviations are pronounced letter by letter (e.g. the BBC). Others are pronounced like words (e.g. UNICEF) - these are often called acronyms.

Answers

Paragraph A = ii

🔘Explanation: The passage is about the greenhouse effect so the first paragraph explains the meaning of the word greenhouse. This is shown in the topic sentence and explained in the following sentences. The first paragraph does give information about plants in a greenhouse (iv) but this is only an example of how a greenhouse is used and not the aim of the paragraph.

Paragraph B = iii

🔘Explanation: The second paragraph explains that earth functions the same way as a greenhouse due to gases in the atmosphere. This is shown in the topic sentence. There is information about the temperatures on earth (i) but only to explain the greenhouse effect. Also there is information about earth’s atmosphere (v) but only as it relates to the greenhouse effect.

📌 Matching Headings Practice

📍Choose the correct heading for paragraphs A & B from the list of headings below.

i. Temperatures on earth
ii. What is a greenhouse
iii. How is earth a greenhouse
iv. Plants that grow in a greenhouse
v. Earth’s atmosphere
vi. Why people have greenhouses

The greenhouse effect

A.   A greenhouse is a house made of glass. It has glass walls and a glass roof. People grow tomatoes and flowers and other plants in them. A greenhouse stays warm inside, even during winter. Sunlight shines in and warms the plants and air inside. But the heat is trapped by the glass and cannot escape. So during the daylight hours, it gets warmer and warmer inside a greenhouse, and stays quite warm at night too.
B.   Earth’s atmosphere does the same thing as the greenhouse. Gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide do what the roof of a greenhouse does. During the day, the Sun shines through the atmosphere. Earth’s surface warms up in the sunlight. At night, Earth’s surface cools, releasing the heat back into the air. But some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That is what keeps our Earth a warm and comfortable 59 degrees Fahrenheit, on average.

▪️By any chance

By any chance did you go to Malaysia?

We use the phrase 'by any chance' when we are asking if something is true or possible, but we don't really expect the answer to be yes. Notice the following:

▫️You don't, by any chance, have an extra umbrella I could borrow?

▫️Can you take care of my daughter on Friday night, by any chance?

▪️Colonize

We learned about the colonization of Malaysia.

To 'colonize' a place is to establish a colony or area to live there. Colonization happened frequently from the 1600s until the 1800s, when countries were exploring new lands and making towns in the new places. Usually this involved conquering the local people. Notice the following:

▫️Teaching people about religion was part of the colonization process.

▫️They planned to colonize the new territory.

▪️Make it back

I just made it back.

The phrase 'make it back' means to return from another place but the return trip was either long or difficult. Notice the following:

▫️How did you make it back after your car stopped working.

▫️Sorry. I'm not going to make it back in time for our meeting.

▪️Face of the earth

Jim Thompson vanished from the face of the earth.

If someone falls off 'the face of the earth' he has disappeared and you don't see or communicate with him anymore. The face of the earth is literally the ground we stand on, but we usually use to talk about all the parts of Earth in a general sense. Notice the following:

▫️Where have you been? I thought you had fallen off the face of the earth.

▫️It feels like all the good people have disappeared from the face of the earth.

▪️Watch your step

Be careful if you go hiking. Watch your step.

Literally, 'watch your step' means be careful where you put your feet, but we use this phrase to tell someone to be careful. Notice the following:

▫️When you start a new job it is always important to watch your step until you figure out the rules.

▫️Watch your step when you work with her. She has a habit of not telling the truth.

🇺🇸Todd: So, you were saying you went to Laos, you went to Thailand, by any chance did you go to Malaysia?

🇨🇦Phil: Yeah, I spent, I spent some time in Malaysia. The first stop, we went there from Singapore, just taking a bus and we ended up in Malacca. Stayed about five days in Malacca. Malacca's nice. There's a lot of history there. We learned a lot about the colinization of Malacca, the Portuguese and then the Dutch, and then the English and then the Japanese, and, yeah, it was a really interesting place. There was old St. Peter's Church. There's several Mosques. It's a good place to spend for a few days. From there we went to Kuala Lumpur. We didn't really spend much time in Kuala Lumpur. We had spent a week in Singapore and were pretty tired of cities. so we only spent I believe two or three days in Kuala Lumpur, just visits from shopping malls, the KLCC, the Petronas Towers, and yeah, that's basically what we did in KL, and then we went to the Cameron Highlands, and if you like hiking, the Cameron Highlands is a great place for you. I don't know, they might have 16, 17 different marked trails. There's a whole lot of unmarked trails. We spent a month there. I think I only went on only six hikes maybe during that month but once again we were being lazy, and yeah, if you're an avid hiker then you're certainly going to enjoy the Cameron Highlands.

Todd: Yeah, actually, I did the hike in the Cameron Highland once, and foolishly I started my hike at about 4 o'clock and I thought I could make the loop of the trail at the time, and the sun started to go down, and I was in the jungle, and I was worried about getting back, and I just made it back, but I was pretty scared for awhile.

Phil: You were lucky. Some people don't make it back.

Todd: Really?

Phil: Well, Jim Thompson. Maybe you've heard of him.

Todd: Yeah, actually, why don't you tell the people about Jim Thompson?

Phil: Jim Thompson was a trader. I think he was maybe based in Hong Kong, but I'm not sure. Maybe it was based in Malaysia. He went hiking. I believe it was 1967, in the Cameron Highlands, and no one has seen him since. He's just vanished from the face of the earth. So, be careful if you go hiking there. Watch your step.

▪️Industry

There's not much industry in Laos.

"Industry" is trade or business activity.  Business activity can be the production or manufacture of items. Notice the following:

▫️Because there is no real industry here a lot of people are unemployed.

▫️Wine is a big industry in California.

▪️Cuisine

The food is really good, a lot of French cuisine.

A "cuisine" is a style of cooking. Basically there is a lot French food. Notice the following:

▫️What is your favorite cuisine?

▫️Do you like Greek cuisine?

▪️As well

Lao cuisine is good as well.

"As well" is similar to "too" and "also." We use it to add additional agreeing information. Notice the following:

▫️I didn't know you were studying Italian as well.

▫️My sister is coming with us as well.

▪️Trail

We would jog for miles and miles on this little trail.

A "trail" is a path or a very small dirt road that is used for walking. Trails are not wide enough to drive on. Notice the following:

▫️On Sundays we go biking on the public trail.

▫️There is a trail that goes from my house to the river.

🇺🇸Todd: So you went to Thailand, right?

🇨🇦Phil: Yep, I spent some time in Thailand. Unfortunately I didn't see very much of it. I saw Bangkok and Ko Samet.

Todd: Oh, OK. Those are, Ko Samet is a nice place.

Phil: Ko Samet is really nice. Good swimming.

Todd: Did you go to any countries around Thailand?

Phil: Yeah, we spent 2 weeks in Lao and I really, really enjoyed Lao. Lao is a very poor country. There's not much industry, a lot of it's still mining, fishing, on the Mekong you still see women panning for gold, but my favorite place in Lao is a place called Luang Prabang, and it's, we really didn't do very much. There's lots of things to do. You can go to caves. You can take inner tubes and go down the river, basically we just ate. The food is really good, a lot of French cuisine, the Lao cuisine is good as well, but we just hung around, read books, and enjoyed our days because it was really, really hot, and really, really dry. This was in February.

Todd: Actually, I've been to Luang Prabang and I remember joggin along the river and, just right outside the city and we would jog for miles and miles, on this little trail. It was just beautiful.

Phil: Yeah. Yeah, it's nice. I really like Luang Prabang. We went to Vietienne as well. It's not so much, it's not as cultural as say Luang Prabang is, but a lot of people like to go there to relax, hang out. That's where a lot of people take the tubes and go down the river so, but once again it was so hot we didn't really do any of that either.

▪️Apart from

South London isn't famous for much apart from rude people.

'Other than' is another way to say 'apart from.'  The example sentence means that South London is famous for rude people and nothing else. Notice the following:

▫️Apart from the fact that she is always late, you really can't say anything bad about her.

▫️I love Italian food, apart from pizza.

▪️Accent

Everyone's got different accents.

Your 'accent' is the sound of your voice when you speak.  Even though people different parts of the world speak the same language they have a different accent because of where they are from. Notice the following:

▫️After living in a different country for many years she had a very strange accent.

▫️In the movie he sounds American, but he actually has a strong British accent.

▪️Act

Everyone acts differently.

How you 'act' are your actions, what you do, and your personality. Notice the following:

▫️You need to act like you don't know about the party. It was going to be a surprise.

▫️She always acts like that when she likes a boy.

▪️Believe me

Believe me there's a lot of different places.

'Believe me' is a way to say 'trust me' or "I'm telling the truth." Notice the following:

▫️Believe me. You can find a better hotel than that!

▫️You never believe me when I tell you things.

🇺🇸Todd: Hello, Jason. You're from England. Uh, where are you from in England?

🇬🇧Jason: I'm from South London.

Todd: Oh, cool. South London. Why don't you talk about that for awhile.

Jason: OK, well, London is a little bit colder that Japan, it's a little bit more expensive as well, so it is kind of nice to come here and spend my money.

Todd: So actually, you said South London right? Is that where Wimbleton is? South London?

Jason: Wimbleton, No! Wimbleton's in West London.

Todd: West London!

Jason: Yeah. South London isn't famous for much, really, apart from rude people like me.

Todd: So what's the difference between South London and West London and North London?

Jason: Yeah, there is a big difference between all the places in London. Everyone's got different accents. Everyone acts differently. England has a lot of different places. For example, in North England they'll have different accents, completely different accents, from South England and sometimes even different languages, like in Wales and Scotland, so.

Todd: So your accent is South London.

Jason: My accent is South London, yeah. Someone from North London would sound completely different from me, and West London and so on, so.

Todd: So is South London the best place to live?

Jason: Oh, yeah, of course. Actually, Central London would be but it is way too expensive, kind of like Tokyo.

Todd: OK. Were you born in South London?

Jason: Yeah, I was born in South London. Yeah. But, you know, I've been everywhere in England, so and believe me there's a lot of different places, everywhere is different, so.

🇺🇸Todd: OK, Phil, you just got back from living in China.

🇨🇦Phil: Yeah, I lived in China about two years ago.

Todd: Wow. What was China like?

Phil: China was an eye-opener. It's a very old culture, but there's not many new, there's not many old things around in China, through wars, through the cultural revolution, a lot of stuff's been burnt, a lot of stuff just's been knocked down. One of the few old things that is there is the Great Wall of China. It's very famous this wall, very big. They are doing some efforts to try and build the wall up again, but when I was there, I believe it was August, 2002 it was still mostly old stuff.

Todd: Yeah, what else did you see in China?

Phil: Ah, I went to Xian and I saw the Terra-cotta warriors. Terra-cotta warriors were discovered shortly after Mao died in the late 70's by a farmer who was digging a well, and he was digging this well and he found all these stone warriors, literally hundreds of them, and it's a national treasure now.

Todd: Wow! That's fascinating.

Phil: Yeah, it's really an impressive thing to see. Those are the two really old man-made things that I saw in China.

Todd: Was there anything else that was really spectacular?

Phil: The Three Gorges tour was really good. Sadly they are all under water now because of the dam project, but I was able to go shortly before it was flooded and really, really enjoyed it. Saw a lot of beautiful things. Surprisingly enough the water was a lot cleaner than I thought and I actually went swimming in it.

Todd: Oh, cool.

Phil: Yeah, for, this is the Yangzhe River in China and if you've ever seen the Yangzhe, most parts of it, you certainly wouldn't want to swim in it, but these parts were pristine.

🎧Why you think you're right -- even if you're wrong | Julia Galef

Perspective is everything, especially when it comes to examining your beliefs. Are you a soldier, prone to defending your viewpoint at all costs -- or a scout, spurred by curiosity? Julia Galef examines the motivations behind these two mindsets and how they shape the way we interpret information, interweaved with a compelling history lesson from 19th-century France. When your steadfast opinions are tested, Galef asks: "What do you most yearn for? Do you yearn to defend your own beliefs or do you yearn to see the world as clearly as you possibly can?"
