Theme: "In Solidarity for a Green World"
President: Mukhtar Babayev (Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Azerbaijan)
Participants: UNFCCC member countries [There are 198 Parties (197 countries plus the European Union) to the Convention]

Outcomes:
1. Azerbaijan announced Climate Finance Action Fund (CFAF) of US$1 billion as an annual contributions from fossil fuel-producing countries and companies, which would then be re-invested in renewable energy projects in developing countries.
2. The UAE has launched “Global Energy Efficiency Alliance” during COP29.
3. Triple finance to developing countries, from the previous goal of USD 100 billion annually, to USD 300 billion annually by 2035. To scale up finance to developing countries, from public and private sources, to the amount of USD 1.3 trillion per year by 2035. This is called 'New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG)'.

India's stand: India along with other developing nations accused the COP29 presidency of pushing the deal through without their proper consent. Meaningful climate action requires meaningful finance. The $300 billion annual commitment pales in comparison to the $1 trillion annually that developing nations collectively demanded.

Note: Article 6 of the Paris Agreement allows countries to cooperate to reduce their carbon emissions and meet their climate action plans.

COP Presidency Troika: The UAE (COP28 in 2023), Azerbaijan (COP29 present), and Brazil (COP30 in 2025)

COP: Conference of Parties is the series of formal meetings Conference of Parties, where governments assess global efforts to advance the Paris Agreement and the Convention, also limit global warming to 1.5°C.

📌 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has published the World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) 2024

🧷 India has secured a spot in the global top 10 for all three major intellectual property (IP) rights—patents, trademarks, and industrial designs.

🧷 India recorded the fastest growth in patent (+15.7%) applications in 2023 among the top 20 origins, marking the fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth.

🧷 India ranks sixth globally for patents with 64,480 applications, with resident filings accounting for over half of all submissions (55.2%)—a first for the country.

🧷 India ranked fourth globally in trademark filings, with a 6.1% increase in 2023.

🧷 The report indicates a steady rise (36.4%) in India’s industrial design applications. The top three sectors—Textiles and Accessories, Tools and Machines, and Health and Cosmetics—made up almost half of all design filings.

🧷 India now holds the second-largest number of active trademark registrations in the world, with over 3.2 million trademarks in force.The largest proportion of trademark filings in India came from sectors such as Health (21.9%), Agriculture (15.3%), and Clothing (12.8%).

🧷 National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy in India was launched in 2016.

The World Bank upped India's economic growth forecast for the current fiscal year, ending in March 2025, to 7% year-on-year, up from April's estimate of 6.6%, helped by a rebound in agricultural output and increased private consumption.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its World Economic Outlook has reaffirmed its growth forecast for India at 7% for the fiscal year 2025, in line with its previous prediction made in July. The projected growth rate for the fiscal year 2026 is set at 6.5%. Global economic growth is anticipated to decelerate to 3.2% in 2024, down from 3.3% in the previous year. The U.S. is projected to grow at 2.8% this year and 2.2% next year.

The RBI's rate-setting panel retained its real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecast at 7.2 per cent for FY25. For Q1 FY26, the growth rate was kept at 7.3%.

The Reserve Bank of India has granted a white label ATM license for the first time after a decade to Electronic Payment and Services (EPS).

With this significant regulatory move, the Mumbai-headquartered EPS, backed by investors like UK's Apis Partners and Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank FMO, will become the country's fifth existing white label ATM operator after Tata Communications Payment Solutions, India1 Payments, Hitachi Payment and Vakrangee.

White-label ATMs are owned and operated by non-banking entities, and customers of any bank can use them. Earlier three other companies had surrendered their licenses.

The country's first WLA was set up by Indicash, established by Tata Communication Payment Solutions, in Chandrapada, Thane district of Maharashtra on June 27, 2013.

Cyclone Dana was named by Qatar according to the tropical cyclone naming system formulated by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). The word Dana means ‘generosity’ in Arabic.

Cyclone Dana was be the second cyclonic storm to strike the Indian coast in two months after Cyclone Asna hit the peninsula in late August.

In a bid to bolster its combat capabilities through the integration of cutting-edge and emerging technologies, the Indian Army’s Sudarshan Chakra Corps, under the Southern Command, is conducting ‘Exercise Swavlamban Shakti’ at the Babina Field Firing Ranges near Jhansi.

The XXI Corps, also known as the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, is a strike formation headquartered in Bhopal. This exercise is focused on incorporating New Technology Equipment (NTEs) into the Army’s offensive operations, ensuring preparedness for future conflict scenarios.

Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman recently concluded their bilateral naval exercise, 'Naseem Al Bahr' off the coast of Goa. INS Trikand and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, participated in the exercise.

The exercise was conducted in two phases- harbour phase followed by the sea phase.

Oman is the first Gulf country with which all the three wings of India's defence forces hold joint exercises.

Scotland qualified for the Women's T20 World Cup for the first time.

Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW). She will be the 9th Chairperson of NCW.

The NCW is a statutory body of the Government of India, generally concerned with advising the government on all policy matters affecting women. It was established on 31 January 1992 under the provisions of the Indian Constitution, as defined in the 1990 National Commission for Women Act. The first head of the commission was Jayanti Patnaik.

Arjun Vajpai, the youngest person to climb Mt. Everest, has made India proud once again.

When Arjun Vajpai stood on top of Mt. Shishapangma (China), he completed his 8th successful summit and registered a total of 4 records all together. Arjun Vajpai who embarked on this journey of scaling all 14 at the age of 16 in 2010, has successfully summited 8 of the 14 peaks till date.

With his historical feat of scaling Mt. Shishapangma, he has become the 1st Indian to ascent Mt. Shishapangma and broken the record for the ⁠fastest ascent of Mt. Shishapangma which includes Base camp to Summit and back to Base camp in under 72 hours. He became the 1st Indian to successfully stand on the top of eight 8000m mountains and ⁠made the record for the fastest Indian ascent of a 8000m peak in China.

According to the second All India Rural Financial Inclusion Survey by the NABARD, the average monthly income increased from 8,059 rupees in 2016-17 to 12,698 rupees in 2021-22. The average monthly expenditure of households also increased from over 6,600 rupees to over 11,200 rupees.
