Allah says in surah Saba' [34]:
[اعْمَلُوا آلَ دَاوُودَ شُكْرًا]
Work, O family of Dawud, in gratitude [13]
Under his tafsir of this ayah, ibn Kathir wrote:
[فيه دلالة على أن الشكر يكون بالفعل كما يكون بالقول وبالنية ... قال أبو عبد الرحمن الحبلي : الصلاة شكر ، والصيام شكر ، وكل خير تعمله لله شكر . وأفضل الشكر الحمد . رواه ابن جرير . وروى هو وابن أبي حاتم ، عن محمد بن كعب القرظي قال : الشكر تقوى الله والعمل الصالح . ]
This wording indicates that gratitude can be through one's actions just as it can be through one's statements and intentions.
Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Hubuli said: Prayer is gratitude, fasting is gratitude, every good deed that you do for Allah's sake is gratitude. And the best form of gratitude is *al-hamd*.
This was reported by ibn Jarir [al-Tabari].
Ibn Jarir and ibn Abi Haatim both reported that Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurathi said: Gratitude is having taqwa of Allah and doing righteous deeds.

TREMENDOUS DISTINCTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF RAMADAN:
• A pillar from the pillars of Islām is performed in it (fasting).
• Allāh revealed the Qur'ān in it.
• It contains a night that is better than a thousand months.
• From the virtues of this month is that the deeds are multiplied abundantly therein, more so than they are in other months, due to the nobility of what Allāh has placed in it.
• From its virtues is that Allāh has specified it with the Tarāwīh prayer, which is prayed in the mosques in congregation. This is only in the month of Ramadān. This indicates its virtue and great status with Allāh سبحانه وتعالى.
• From its virtues is that within it, the doors of Paradise are opened in order to accept the righteous deeds and the doers of these deeds. Likewise, the doors of the Fire are closed, for sins are minimized in the month of Ramadān and the Muslims devote themselves to obedience and racing towards Paradise.
• From its virtues is that the devils are chained and locked away from the believers. So Allāh سبحانه وتعالى restrains the devils from the believers during this month, so they cannot corrupt their worship. Due to this, you find the people devoting themselves to obedience in this month; even those who are lazy throughout the year, you find them devoting themselves to the obedience of Allāh in Ramadān. This is something clear. Why is this? This is because the devils are locked away from the people of īmān. As for the people of disbelief and hypocrisy, the devils have mastery over them in the month of Ramadān and other than it. The devils are only chained away from the believers, specifically in the month of Ramadān. This is so they can adhere to the obedience of Allāh. As for the hypocrites and the disbelievers, they are as Allāh سبحانه وتعالى has said:
{ أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ تَؤُزُّهُمْ أَزًّا }
See you not that We have sent the devils against the disbelievers to push them to do evil. [Sūrah Maryam 19:83]
