🥜 Known in English as fox nut, makhana (black diamond) is the dried edible seed of the prickly water lily or gorgon plant (euryale ferox)
🥜 It grows in freshwater ponds across South and East Asia.
🥜 The plant is known for its violet and white flowers, and massive, round and prickly leaves often stretching more than a meter across.
🥜 It is considered as native of South-East Asia and China, but distributed to almost every part of the world.
🥜 Climatic conditions
🌡 Temperature: 20°C to 35°C
💧 Relative humidity :50% to 90%
🌧 Annual rainfall: 100 to 250 cm
🍂 Soil: Smooth loamy soil
🥜 Bihar contributes to roughly 90% of India’s makhana production.
🥜 Production is concentrated in nine districts of northern and eastern Bihar which fall in the Mithilanchal region
🥜 Outside Bihar, the crop is cultivated in smaller quantities in the states of Assam, Manipur, West Bengal, Tripura and Odisha, as well as in Nepal, Bangladesh, China, Japan, and Korea.

What's in the news?
🔸United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw from the World Health Organisation (WHO) on his very first day in office.
WHO - Backdrop:
🔹The WHO is a UN body working on global health.
🔹It works with countries to strengthen their primary health care, its guidelines help prepare government policies, and it helps organise programmes to tackle specific diseases.
Governance Structure:
🔹Members - 194 member states.
🔹World Health Assembly (WHA) - highest decision-making body of WHO and comprises representatives from all member States.
🔹Secretariat - Responsible for carrying out the policies and programs approved by the WHA.
🔹Director-General - Director-General heads the WHA and is supported by a senior management team.
🔹Regional Offices - WHO also has six regional offices namely Africa, the Americas, Southeast Asia, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, and Western Pacific.
🔹Meetings - meets annually to set policies, approve the budget and elect the Director-General.
Funding Mechanism:
WHO gets its funding from two main sources:
🔹Assessed contributions - These are the dues countries pay in order to be a member of the Organization.
⏭⏭In assessed contributions, the United States is the biggest payer, accounting for 22.5% of the contributions, followed by China at 15%.
🔹Voluntary contributions - It is from Member States (in addition to their assessed contribution) or from other partners like United Nations organizations, intergovernmental organizations, philanthropic foundations, the private sector etc.

🔸This provision was enacted in 1868 and was designed to extend citizenship to all persons born in the US.
Recent Change under Trump 2.0:
🔹Among the first few ‘Presidential Actions’ listed by the White House on its website, the order titled ‘Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship’ specifies that those who were born in the US “but not subject to the jurisdiction thereof” are excluded from birthright citizenship.
🔹The new order would deny US citizenship, including passports, to those children born in the US starting 30 days from now, if at least one parent isn’t an American citizen.
❇️According to the White House statement, among the categories of individuals “born in the US and not subject to the jurisdiction thereof”, include:
🔹when that person’s mother was unlawfully present in the US and the father was not a US citizen or lawful permanent resident at the time of said person’s birth, or

Phos-Chek: Pink Fire Retardant sprayed to put-out California Forest Fires
🧯Fire retardant is a mix of chemicals used to extinguish or slow down the spread of fires.
🧯Phos-Chek brand is mostly used and it contains an ammonium phosphate-based slurry ( salts like ammonium polyphosphate) which does not evaporate easily like water and stays for longer.
🧯 The retardant is sprayed ahead of the fire in a bid to coat vegetation and prevent oxygen from allowing it to burn.
🧯Colour is usually added to the fire retardant to ensure that firefighters can see it against the landscape.
🧯Environmental Concerns:
Spraying fire retardant using planes is ineffective, expensive and a growing source of pollution for rivers and streams and kill aquatic life
🧯 It is laden with toxic metals, which include chromium and cadmium which can cause cancer, and kidney and liver diseases in humans

🛰 SpaDeX Mission is a technology demonstrator mission for the in-space docking using two small spacecraft launched by PSLV.

🔹The Government of Chhattisgarh, on advice of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), notified the Guru Ghasidas - Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve across Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, Korea, Surajpur and Balrampur districts of Chhattisgarh.
🔹The National Tiger Conservation Authority had accorded final approval for notifying the Guru Ghasidas- Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve in October, 2021.
Geography:
🔹The tiger reserve, encompassing a total area of 2829.38 sq.kms, includes a core/critical tiger habitat of 2049.2 sq.kms, comprising the Guru Ghasidas National Park and Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary, and has a buffer of 780.15 sq.kms.
Ecology:
🔹Nestled in the Chota Nagpur plateau and partly in Baghelkhand plateau, the tiger reserve is blessed with varied terrains, dense forests, streams and rivers favourable for harbouring a rich faunal diversity and contains critical habitats for the tiger.
🔹A total of 753 species, including 365 invertebrates and 388 vertebrates, have been documented from Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve by the Zoological Survey of India.
