Can Chinese New Year Drive a Market Rally? History Says So

🎋Chinese New Year’s Effect on Stock Market

The impact of this holiday on the stock market is generally mixed. Typically, there is a positive sentiment leading up to Golden Week, which can lift the China A50 index.

Before the close of the stock market, we tend to see a lot of profit-taking behaviour to finance spending over the holidays, which can lead to fluctuations in share prices. However, this is usually followed by a spike once the market reopens.

Let’s take 2022 for example: Hong Kong shares saw one of their best sessions in two weeks once the market reopened after Lunar New Year’s three-day closure. The Hang Seng index (Hong Kong 50) was up 2.71%.

This year, China’s stock market has suffered the worst start to the year in a decade:

✔️The CSI 300 index closed down 2.9pc on Thursday, January 2nd, marking its steepest decline on the first day of annual trading since 2016.

✔️The Hang Seng index also fell by 2.2%.

The Yuan

Cash is king during Chinese New Year. As a new year tradition, people give cash as gifts in the form of “red packets”. Consequently, the rising demand for cash can cause a strengthening of the Chinese yuan against major currencies at the year start.

Did you know? The USD/CNH wrapped up January lower 4 out of 5 times from 2018 to 2022.

First Fed Meeting of the Year Tarnished by Trump’s Return

The Federal Reserve is gathering this week to hold its first meeting of 2025 under a looming shadow of a new U.S. President who is already posing challenges to the central bank with his words, decisions, and possible actions.

Before jumping in on what’s to come, it is worth noting that the American Central Bank wrapped up 2024 with a decision to decrease the federal funds rate by 25 basis points, setting the target range at 4.25% to 4.5%.

Fed vs. White House

Ever since taking office, Trump has been making controversial decisions of all types regarding cryptocurrencies, trade tariffs, interest rates, and much more.

Former President, Joe Biden, reappointed Powell instead of replacing him – a move signaling support for the Fed’s independence.

Did you know? Powell’s term runs through May 2026, when Trump could nominate a successor.

Additionally, the United States’ 47th President hinted at a possible clash with Fed policymakers when speaking at the World Economic Forum last week, bluntly stating that he will be “demanding” lower interest rates.

Trump said he expects to talk directly with the Fed’s Chair “at the right time”.

Powell and Trump may find themselves at odds because Fed officials have repeatedly indicated that interest rates are unlikely to change anytime soon, following a full percentage point cut at the end of last year.

The Fed has been adopting a more careful posture on interest rates, signaling just two rate cuts this year and a likely halt at this week’s meeting. Officials have two economic objectives: low and steady inflation (aka price stability) and ensuring everyone in the labor market can easily find a job (aka maximum employment).

One of the many reasons behind this cautious approach is Trump’s return to the White House and the uncertainty that comes with his new policies. Jerome Powell has also said that some Fed officials have even started to factor these policies into their economic projections for the year.

💰Assets' initial reaction to Trump's inauguration:

✔️Dow futures contract is up 0.3%
✔️S&P 500 futures rose by 0.3%
✔️Nasdaq increased by 0.2%

🇺🇲Trump shakes the crypto market by launching his own coin, $TRUMP, which spiked to over $10 billion in market value right after he was sworn in as the U.S. 47th president.

✔️The memecoin was launched last Friday
✔️$TRUMP went from trading at less than $10 to reaching as high as $74.59 on Monday
✔️$MELANIA, a rival coin to $TRUMP, was also launched.

Bitcoin, world's largest cryptocurrency by market cap, reached a new all-time-high level of approximately $110,000 - however, BTC couldn't sustain its momentum.

🧐As a trader kicking off your trading journey, one of the most important questions that comes to mind is:

Would you be happier as a funded trader or retail trader?

While the answer is not as simple, prop trading presents opportunities not necessarily found in retail.

✔️Leverage

Funded traders usually have more money available to trade than retail traders as prop firms tend to have not only a good reputation, but also more bargaining power. A prop company might be more advantageous given that they will give traders additional capital to trade according to their results.

On the other hand, retail traders start with limited leverage, which will be difficult to change unless they deposit more money into their account.

✔️Commission

Proprietary firms can negotiate lower commission fees with brokers due to their high trading volume, and they pass these discounts on to traders accordingly.

Retail traders, on the other hand, don’t have this bargaining power and usually face higher fees.

✔️Training & Resources

In prop firms, it is very common to offer free training, resources, and community support – which is important, especially at the beginning of a trading journey, where a trader would require guidance and theoretical and psychological support.

Retail traders are free to trade whatever they want but won’t be able to benefit from the support of other experienced traders and a favorable environment promoting growth.

✔️Profit Split

One key difference between both types of trading is the way profits are split. A proprietary firm makes money from commissions, but also from a share of the trader’s profits. On the contrary, the retail trader keeps 100% of the profits.
