Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced on Wednesday that Israel would follow the United States in withdrawing from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

In a post on X, Sa’ar accused the council of enabling human rights abusers by shielding them from scrutiny while “obsessively demonizing the one democracy in the Middle East—Israel.”

He further criticized the UNHRC for “attacking a democratic country and spreading antisemitism instead of promoting human rights.”

“The discrimination against us is clear,” Sa’ar stated. “In the UNHRC, Israel is the only country with a dedicated agenda item solely focused on it. Israel has faced over 100 condemnatory resolutions—more than 20% of all resolutions ever passed by the council—exceeding those against Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and Venezuela combined.”

Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the UNHRC and cutting funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, the primary organization assisting Palestinian refugees.

Argentina has announced its decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), following a similar move by U.S. President Donald Trump last month.

“President (Javier) Milei instructed (foreign minister) Gerardo Werthein to withdraw Argentina’s participation in the World Health Organization,” presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni said at a news conference on Wednesday.

“We Argentinians will not allow an international organization to intervene in our sovereignty, much less in our health,” he added.

The US President Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday that Palestinians in Gaza should be permanently displaced, claiming they had no alternative but to leave the enclave, which has been devastated by Israel’s military assault.

Trump, who was scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the same day, first proposed the idea of relocating Palestinians from Gaza on January 25. At that time, he urged Egypt and Jordan to take in more people. When asked whether he envisioned this as a temporary or permanent solution, he responded, “Could be either.”

Since then, Trump has reiterated the proposal at least four times, including on Tuesday when he suggested that Palestinians from Gaza could be relocated to countries beyond Jordan and Egypt as well.

The idea has been met with strong opposition from Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab nations, as well as Palestinian leaders. Critics argue that such a move would amount to ethnic cleansing, reinforcing long-standing Palestinian fears of being permanently expelled from their homeland.

Israel’s military assault on Gaza has resulted in over 47,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza health ministry. The offensive has also led to accusations of genocide and war crimes, which Israel denies.

The conflict has internally displaced nearly Gaza’s entire population and triggered a severe hunger crisis. At present, fighting has paused due to a fragile ceasefire.

Germany, still grappling with the aftermath of the devastating terror attack in Magdeburg, is shaken by yet another tragedy in Aschaffenburg. A brutal knife attack, carried out by a 28-year-old Afghan man, claims the lives of a man and a two-year old boy, leaving four others seriously wounded in its wake.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the attack was "an unbelievable act of terror" and offered his sympathies to the victims' families and two more people injured.

"I am sick of seeing such acts of violence occurring in our country every few weeks, by perpetrators who have actually come here to find protection here," he said.

The Syrian government has canceled a 2019 agreement with Russian company Stroytransgaz to manage and invest in the Tartus seaport, according to Al Watan Online. Revenues from the port will now benefit the Syrian state, said Riyad Joudeh, head of Tartus customs. He also noted efforts to restore equipment left unmodernized under the agreement.

The original 49-year deal included over $500 million in planned investments by Russia for port modernization. Tartus, Syria’s second-largest port, also houses Russia’s only naval base outside the former Soviet Union.

Observers have reported signs of Russia withdrawing military equipment from Syria. Analysts suggest this could signal shifts in Russia’s regional military strategy, particularly if assets are relocated to Libya’s Tobruk port.

In Tehran, the capital of Iran, two prominent judges were murdered in an attack at the country's Supreme Court.

On Saturday morning, an armed individual entered Iran's Supreme Court during a planned action and assaulted the judges, leading to their tragic deaths.

The attacker committed suicide immediately afterward. Preliminary investigations revealed that the attacker had no criminal cases in Iran's Supreme Court and was not a client of any of its departments.

This attack comes amid a rise in antigovernment sentiment in the country, with individuals increasingly resorting to violent forms of protest.
A similar incident occurred in October of last year when a religious leader was brutally slain after Friday prayers in Kazeroun, southern Iran.

An investigation is currently underway to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have been involved in the attack.

Armenia and the United States have signed a strategic partnership charter. The agreement, signed by Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington, D.C., establishes a framework for cooperation in areas such as economic development, security, democracy, and justice.

To explore the implications of the agreement, 301 spoke with Suren Sargsyan, an expert on U.S. foreign policy, researcher, and author. Below are key insights from the interview:

Interview with Suren Sargsyan on the Armenia-U.S. Strategic Partnership Charter

Question 1: What is the legal significance of the recently signed Armenia-U.S. Strategic Partnership Charter?

Suren Sargsyan: The document is a declaration, not a legally binding treaty. It creates a commission tasked with strengthening Armenian-American relations across various domains.

Question 2: How likely is it that the U.S. administration will implement the provisions of the Charter?

Suren Sargsyan: I foresee no issues with implementation. U.S. administrative transitions ensure continuity, but success depends on Armenia’s ability to collaborate effectively with the administration.

Question 3: Does the Charter include specific provisions for security cooperation?

Suren Sargsyan: Yes, it includes initiatives to enhance Armenia’s military capabilities, reflecting decades of growing ties. However, the U.S. does not offer security guarantees under this agreement. Armenia is a strategic partner, not a strategic ally. This distinction must be clearly communicated to avoid misunderstandings.

Question 4: How should Secretary
Blinken’s statement on customs and border security be interpreted?

Suren Sargsyan: A working group will likely assess the Armenian-Georgian and possibly Armenian-Iranian borders. It’s unlikely this pertains to the closed Armenian-Azerbaijani or Armenian-Turkish borders. Future normalization with Turkey or Azerbaijan could extend similar programs to those borders.

Question 5: Are Russia and Iran implicit “targets” of this Charter?

Suren Sargsyan: No, this agreement is not directed against Russia or Iran. While such speculation is inevitable, Armenia must reassure these countries diplomatically to maintain balanced regional relations.

Conclusion

The Armenia-U.S. Strategic Partnership Charter symbolizes a commitment to expanding cooperation but requires careful diplomacy to manage regional dynamics.

Lebanese Parliament Elects Army Commander Joseph Aoun as President After Two-Year Deadlock

After 12 failed attempts, Lebanon’s parliament on Thursday elected army commander Joseph Aoun as president, ending a two-year political impasse.

In the first round of voting, Aoun secured 71 out of 128 votes, falling short of the two-thirds majority required for outright victory. The remaining ballots included 37 blank votes and 14 for “sovereignty and the constitution.”

The election followed chaotic scenes in parliament, with lawmakers shouting over one another. Aoun, widely backed by Lebanon’s allies, including the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, received a boost after Hezbollah-backed candidate Suleiman Frangieh withdrew and endorsed him.

This marks the 13th session to elect a successor to former President Michel Aoun, whose term ended in October 2022. Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing system has often led to extended vacancies, including a two-and-a-half-year stalemate between 2014 and 2016.

As a sitting army commander, Aoun faces constitutional hurdles, with a ban on military officials holding the presidency requiring special waivers. His election signals a potential shift as Lebanon grapples with rebuilding after conflict and economic crisis.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Wednesday warned Donald Trump against threatening the EU’s “sovereign borders” after the U.S. president-elect refused to rule out military action to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of EU member state Denmark.

“There is obviously no question that the European Union would let other nations of the world attack its sovereign borders, whoever they are,” he told France Inter radio. “We are a strong continent.”

Trump’s remarks have shaken the island’s loyalty to Denmark, as anti-Danish sentiment is actively being fueled by Trump, his son, and Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter).

France, specifically Macron, has been a strong advocate for a unified EU army and a separate European defense bloc inside NATO. These proposals by the French government have been largely dismissed within the EU as attempts to expand French influence inside the union. However, if Denmark’s sovereignty is violated, this could significantly increase the likelihood of France successfully advancing the initiative.

In a lengthy interview today, Azerbaijan’s dictator Ilham Aliyev issued new threats against Armenia, accusing it of being a fascist state and warning of further escalation if demands are not met.

“Arming Armenia will only bring new tensions. We don’t want this,” Aliyev said, adding that “a fascist state has been formed in Armenia. That fascism will either be destroyed by Armenia’s leadership or by us. There is no other option.”

Aliyev emphasized his vision for peace and cooperation in the South Caucasus, but with conditions that undermine Armenia’s sovereignty. “Armenia should not stand in our way. They should not act as a geographic barrier between Turkey and Azerbaijan. Armenia is effectively a source of threat to the region,” he stated.

Aliyev also dismissed the necessity of a peace treaty with Armenia: “If Yerevan doesn’t need a peace treaty, then Baku doesn’t need it either. We can live without a peace treaty.”

Aliyev revealed that Azerbaijan has proposed holding the next meeting of border delimitation commissions in January. He reiterated Azerbaijan’s insistence on the opening of the so-called “Zangezur Corridor,” which would connect Azerbaijan to Turkey via Armenia.

“The ‘Zangezur Corridor’ must be opened and will be opened. The sooner they understand this, the better,” Aliyev declared.

These remarks highlight Azerbaijan’s escalating rhetoric and potential plans for further military aggression against Armenia.

On December 15, two Russian oil tankers, the Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, were severely damaged during a storm in the Kerch Strait, leading to a massive oil spill in the Black Sea. The Volgoneft-212 split apart and ran aground, resulting in the death of one crew member, while the Volgoneft-239 was left adrift with 14 sailors on board.

The spill released an estimated 3,700 tons of mazut, a heavy fuel oil, contaminating approximately 49 kilometers of Russia’s Black Sea coastline near Anapa. This environmental disaster has severely affected local wildlife, with reports of birds and dolphins covered in oil, and poses long-term ecological risks to the region.

In response, around 4,000 volunteers have been tirelessly working alongside emergency services to clean the polluted beaches, rescue affected wildlife, and mitigate the environmental damage. Their efforts are crucial in addressing the immediate impact of the spill and aiding in the region’s recovery.

The incident has prompted investigations into potential violations of maritime safety regulations, with the captains of both vessels facing scrutiny. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the affected regions and are coordinating large-scale cleanup operations to address the disaster’s aftermath.

This oil spill stresses the environmental hazards associated with aging tanker fleets and highlights the need for stringent maritime safety measures to prevent future ecological catastrophes.

Iran plans a return to the Toman amid rampant inflation and the devaluation of the Rial.

Currently, a single Iranian Rial is worth $0.000024 or €0.000023.

Iran will remove four zeros from its banknotes, replacing the Iranian Rial as the official currency with the Iranian Toman in the process.

Such daring reforms are characteristic of Masoud Pezeshkian’s administration, as he now aims to address issues caused by chronic inflation and the currency’s low purchasing power.

The Toman, however, will not be entirely new to Iranian society. Notably, prior to the 1932 monetary reform, the Toman was also the country’s official currency.

Recent reports suggest that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad may have played a role in sharing intelligence that facilitated an attack on the Iranian consulate back in this April. These allegations, reportedly originating from sources within Iran, have not yet been fully substantiated but have sparked significant speculation about a potential rift between Assad and Iran.

Iran has not officially commented on the matter, underscoring Syria’s strategic importance to its broader vision for the region. The loss of Syria as a key ally would represent a significant challenge for Iran, weakening its position in the Middle East and disrupting its regional influence.

Assad’s regime fell unexpectedly quickly, raising questions about possible premeditated agreements or actions taken to ensure his safety. Speculation was further fueled by a social media post from a family member calling Assad a “traitor to homeland and family,” which has been interpreted by some as evidence of internal dissent and potential backroom deals. Following his departure, Assad was granted asylum in Russia, prompting further discussions about Moscow’s possible involvement in these developments and its shifting stance in the region.

The collapse of Assad’s government has significantly impacted Iran’s network of regional alliances. Lebanon and Hezbollah, which relied on Syria as a crucial land connection to Iran, now face new challenges to their logistics and communication. This shift has also highlighted growing differences between Russia and Iran, particularly regarding strategic issues such as the Zangezur Corridor, where their interests appear to be diverging.

In parallel, tensions are rising in the South Caucasus. Azerbaijan, a close ally of Israel, has taken an increasingly assertive position, heightening concerns about renewed conflict with Armenia, which continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Republic of Artsakh’s full occupation and a domestic political focus on advancing a peaceful agenda. Recently, Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, accused the West of stirring tensions by arming Armenia during an interview with a prominent Russian propagandist. His growing rhetoric about the so-called “Western Azerbaijan” and the alleged plea to the Armenian government for the “return” of 300,000 Azerbaijanis are overwhelming evidence of a coming war in Armenia.

Amid the loss of Syria, Iraq has emerged as a new point of contention. If Iraq were to experience significant destabilization and Armenia were to lose control over its southern territories, Iran could find itself completely isolated, losing its remaining influence in the region.

Iran’s next logical step could be to support the division of Syria, keeping conflicts away from its borders and potentially establishing a loyalist enclave to secure a corridor to Lebanon and protect its Shiite minorities. Additionally, sponsoring the creation of a sovereign Alawite state could further help Iran preserve its declining influence, consolidate its foothold in the region, and ensure a strategic presence along the Mediterranean.

These changes could have far-reaching implications for Middle Eastern geopolitics, with longstanding alliances being redefined and the balance of power shifting. There is also speculation that these setbacks could influence Iran’s strategic policies, including potential adjustments to its nuclear program in response to its evolving regional position.

BREAKING: The United States has successfully brokered a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

The deal, which also saw involvement from France, aims to halt the violence that has claimed thousands of lives and has foreseen massive devastations in Southern Lebanon and capital Beirut.

Set to be formally announced by U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, the ceasefire represents a diplomatic achievement and parting gift from President Biden.

This agreement entails the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, with the Lebanese army deploying 5,000 of its soldiers to the area. Hezbollah has also committed to ending its armed presence south of the Litani River.

The ceasefire not only does not address the ongoing conflict in Gaza, but in his latest statement Israeli PM Netanyahu declared, that the ceasefire will help Israel shift its sight towards the full eradication of Hamas. A statement regarding Iran was also made, drawing parallels with Israel’s survival and preventing Iran from acquiring Nuclear weapons.

In conclusion, with the end of Hezbollah’s military presence in Southern Lebanon, Israeli ground invasion has achieved success. Despite this, fears are already growing over Hezbollah. After decapitation and without any major success in the conflict, the ceasefire is a real opportunity for Hezbollah to recover and reassess its losses.

The ceasefire will take effect tomorrow after 10AM local time.

Controversial investment deal with Russia sparked violent anti-government protests in partially recognized Abkhazia.

Demonstrators demanded to scrap the investment agreement, which critics feared would clear the way for wealthy Russian individuals and businesses to buy up property in the lush Black Sea region, pricing out locals.

The demonstrations since have grown into anti-government protests, aiming to force the current administration to step down.

On Friday, the protesters rammed the gates of parliament building in Sukhum, the Abkhazian capital, in response to which tear gas was fired by police.

Republic’s president, Aslan Bzhania, in office since April 23, 2020, promised to hold snap elections, provided the protesters leave the government buildings.

Germany’s governing coalition has collapsed after Chancellor Olaf Scholz fired a key minister and said he would call a vote of confidence in his government early next year, the BBC reports.

The move means Scholz’s government no longer has a majority in parliament. The confidence vote could lead to early elections by March.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as reported by the Prime Minister’s office.

Netanyahu stated that there were too many disagreements between him and Gallant regarding the conduct of wars. Last year, Israel engaged in war with Hamas, and this year, with Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

At the end of October, it became known that Gallant had sent a letter to Netanyahu and the ministers of the national security cabinet, in which he stated that Israel’s war objectives needed updating.

Netanyahu decided to appoint Foreign Minister Israel Katz to replace Gallant.

“Unfortunately, although there was trust and very productive work in the early months of the war, in recent months that trust between me and the defense minister has cracked,” Netanyahu was quoted by the Times of Israel.
“I made numerous attempts to overcome these differences, but they continued to widen,” he added. “They also became publicly known in an unacceptable way, and worse, they became known to the enemy — our enemies took pleasure in this and greatly benefited from it.”

India and China have completed a phased withdrawal of troops from the Depsang and Demchok areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. Indian troops will soon begin coordinated border patrols with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, according to The Hindustan Times.

The agreement, confirmed by both countries’ foreign ministries on October 21, focuses solely on Depsang and Demchok, where previous clashes occurred, leaving other parts of the LAC in Ladakh unaffected. Tensions along the LAC have persisted for decades due to a lack of a demarcated border, with a major conflict in 1962 and the most recent clashes in 2020, resulting in troop casualties and military buildup in the region.

BREAKING: Israel launched air attacks on the Iranian capital Tehran.

Air raid sirens sounded in Tehran, Hamadan, Mashhad and Isfahan, but only a few hits were officially confirmed in Tehran.

The headquarters of Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps was reportedly among the targets, which was later dismissed by the Iranian media.

The Jordanian airspace was used to conduct the strikes.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense stated that this was a “retaliation” strike on Iran for “waging a 7 front war” on Israel, but the attack falls short of the actual threats sent to the Islamic Republic by Israel.

All flights from International Khomeini Airport have now been resumed.

For the record, this attack marks the first time Israel claimed responsibility for an operation of this kind inside the territories of the Islamic Republic.
