Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held a meeting in Kazan, Russia, during the BRICS+ Summit, as reported by the Armenian government. According to the statement published by the Armenian government, the parties engaged in discussions regarding the advancement of the bilateral peace agenda, which includes the peace agreement, delimitation and demarcation of borders, and other mutual concerns.
Earlier, the two leaders briefly exchanged words during the summit, where they were seated next to each other during the general discussion. According to TASS, the two "exchanged a couple of phrases" while sitting side-by-side at a round table during the plenary session. Other notable participants included Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, seated between the heads of delegations from Bolivia and Bangladesh, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, alongside representatives from Serbia and Nicaragua.
The BRICS Summit, which began on October 22 and concludes on October 24, is expected to produce a final declaration from its member nations. Since the start of 2024, Russia has chaired BRICS under the theme "Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security." Originally formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, BRICS expanded with South Africa in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia joined as full members, marking their first summit as part of the group.
Despite the meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev, no detailed outcomes have been reported yet. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that their conversation, captured on live broadcast, did not interfere with the summit proceedings. "This is a common practice," Peskov noted, explaining that leaders often use multilateral platforms for bilateral discussions.
