In 2001, the total number of students was 38.849, 33.657(87%) of which were local, while 5.192(13%) were international. The percentage of local male students stood at 44%, whereas their female counterparts made up 43% of the total. Similarly, on an international level, the figure for males was higher than that of females, 9% compared to 4%.
In 2011, a similar pattern could be observed. Made up of 39.488(73%) local students and 14.593(27%) international students, there were 54.081 research students in total. Local male students accounted for 38% and females 35% of the whole. However, non-local female students outnumbered non-local male ones, constituting 15% and 12% respectively.
In summary, although both of their proportions increased significantly over the period given, the number of local students was consistently higher than that of international ones. From my point of view, this trend is largely driven by technology and globalization, and it, while entailing certain benefits, is a significantly negative turn of events.
One of the major drivers of the global similarity in lifestyles is technology. With the internet connecting people from a vast array of cultures and nationalities, it has become easier than ever for individuals to gain insights into traditional values, practices, and customs of other countries. Therefore, the cultural lifestyles of dominant nations, such as those in the Western world, are becoming prevalent, leading to a common way to live across the globe.
Furthermore, the increased travel has contributed globalization, creating a rifle effect. With the rise of air-travel, improved transport systems, and passenger ships, people are now able to travel around the world with unparalleled ease. This has led to many people bringing traditional activities and cultural endeavours of other nations into their own countries, further amplifying cross-points in lifestyles of people in the world.
Such similarities in lifestyles of people from different countries, in addition, can contribute to cultural homogenization. When dominant cultures overshadow the marginalized ones, it may diminish cultural diversity, promoting traditions, customs, and rituals of one nation over another’s. As a result, the world can become a banal place, with diversity in opinions fading into obscurity and the same opinions on matters reigning supreme.
Moreover, economic downsides should not be overlooked, as numerous industries are based on cultural diversity. Take tourism as an example, a sector of economy that relies primarily on differences in architectural designs, age-old practices, and unique activities of countries. However, if buildings, lifestyles, and customs of nations are similar, the tourism industry may suffer huge financial losses, with people showing little or no interest in visiting another country due to a lack of novelty and diversity.
Let us not lose sight of a positive aspect. One major benefit presented by this development is the facilitation of global harmony. When people across the world share the same values, traditions, and beliefs, the world can become a tribe of individuals with similar interests and perspectives. This can lead to substantial reductions in cultural clashes, conflicts, and tensions, thereby fostering camaraderie, harmony, and balance in the world.
In conclusion, the proliferation of similar lifestyles around the world is a complicated issue that necessitates careful consideration.
