In a significant step towards enhancing environmental sustainability and public health, a state-of-the-art medical waste incinerator donated by the Japanese government was inaugurated at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College on 5th Dec. 2024. The handover ceremony took place in the presence of the college’s leadership, who expressed gratitude for the generous support from Japan.
The newly installed incinerator boasts a capacity to process 70 kilograms of waste per hour, marking a pivotal modernization of the college's waste disposal system. This advanced technology is expected to significantly improve the handling of medical waste, ensuring safer and more efficient disposal while reducing the environmental footprint.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Sisay Sirgu, Provost of the college, highlighted the importance of this development:
"This incinerator represents a transformative improvement in our college’s waste management system. It reflects our commitment to sustainability and the health of our community."
The initiative underscores the growing partnership between Ethiopia and Japan in advancing healthcare and environmental initiatives. The new facility is expected to set a benchmark for effective medical waste management in similar institutions across the Country.
