Two Australian military veterans have been refused bail after being arrested and charged for allegedly taking out a collector's item Nazi flag at a Sydney pub to take a photo.

A magistrate remanded both in custody "to protect the community", and they will remain in jail until at least February 21.

Political prisoner Stephen Wells, 55, has been in solitary confinement since being arrested and charged with "loitering" while celebrating Australia Day in Adelaide, was denied food for seven days, and was not given toiletries until today.

The bill had a provision to commence the day after it passed both houses.

Typically, it commences after 28 days.

It’s now an Act in law.
