The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) categorizes physical disabilities into several sub-categories to provide a fair and inclusive selection process for candidates with different types of disabilities. The categories for persons with disabilities (PwD) in UPSC exams are defined according to the guidelines of the Government of India. Hereโ€™s what PwD 1, PwD 2, and PwD 3 generally mean:

PwD 1: Locomotor Disability (LD)

This category includes candidates with locomotor disability, which involves disability of the bones, joints, or muscles leading to substantial restriction of the movement of the limbs. This can include conditions like cerebral palsy, dwarfism, muscular dystrophy, and others.

PwD 2: Visual Impairment (VI)

This category includes candidates with visual impairment, which can range from low vision to total blindness. Visual impairment implies a significant limitation in seeing that affects a personโ€™s ability to perform day-to-day tasks.

PwD 3: Hearing Impairment (HI)

This category includes candidates with hearing impairment, which can range from partial to total hearing loss. Hearing impairment implies a significant limitation in hearing that affects a personโ€™s ability to perform day-to-day tasks.

The additional categories - PwD 4 and PwD 5, usually cover other types of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and multiple disabilities.
