Moral Panic – A widespread feeling of fear and outrage among the public, often fueled by the media and political entities, that a particular individual, group, or phenomenon poses a significant threat to social norms or values.

Moral Repugnancy – A concept referring to actions, statements, or behaviors that are widely considered offensive, distasteful, or deeply unethical by societal standards, even if they do not necessarily violate the law.

Faustian Bargain – A situation where an individual or entity sacrifices their moral values, ethical stance, or long-term well-being in exchange for short-term gains or relief. In this context, OTT platforms trade their independence and creative freedom for government protection from criminal prosecution.

Isaiah Berlin famously distinguished between positive freedom and negative freedom in his 1958 lecture Two Concepts of Liberty.

Positive Freedom refers to self-mastery—the ability of individuals to control their own destiny, make rational choices, and fulfill their true potential. It is often linked with collective or individual self-realization, and in some cases, has been used to justify state intervention to help individuals achieve their “real” or “rational” will.

Negative Freedom, on the other hand, is the absence of external constraints or interference from others—especially from the state or other authoritative institutions. It is freedom from coercion, meaning that individuals can act as they wish, as long as they are not being forcibly prevented from doing so by others.

Isaiah Berlin’s concept of negative freedom, the absence of external restrictions, is lacking in India.

The gendered aspect of control is emphasized through legal double standards: courts excusing marital rape, labeling household labor as "a wife's love," and perpetuating "himpathy" (sympathy toward men at the cost of women’s suffering).
