One of India’s most prominent nationalist leaders, Subhas Chandra Bose was born on this day in 1897. Bose is known for leading the Indian National Army, an anti-colonial force to fight British rule in India.

Bose was an ally of Mahatma Gandhi although they didn’t always see eye to eye. He was even President of the Indian National Congress from 1938 to 1939 but soon resigned.

In October 1943, Bose set up the ‘Provisional Government of Azad Hind’ in Japanese-occupied Singapore. It consisted of Indian POWs captured from the British-Indian Army by Japan during World War II and the Indian diaspora in East Asian countries under Japanese occupation.

Bose adapted ‘Jana Gana Mana’ as the anthem of his Indian National Army, in the Hindustani language. He called it ‘Shubh Sukh Chain’. A rare recording sung by Captain Lakshmi Sahgal can be heard today.

History records Subhas Chandra Bose’s death as having taken place as a result of a plane crash in August 1945.

207th anniversary of Battle of Bhima Koregaon.

The battle of Bhima Koregaon was fought on January 1, 1818, between Peshwa Bajirao II and British army commanded by Captain FF Staunton of the East India Company.

It was a part of the 3rd Anglo-Maratha War.

The British army was largely dominated by Mahars - the most populous of the Dalit sub-castes in Maharashtra. Peshwa army was defeated.

In the memory of Battle, the British built squared-pillar to pay homage to the martyr soldiers, which is popularly known as ‘Koregaon Pillar’.

After Dr. B. R. Ambedkar visited the site on January 1, 1927, it became a place of pilgrimage for Dalits, an assertion of pride. In recent years, attendance has been in the lakhs, with Dalits coming from all over India.

Suniti Choudhury (22 May 1917 – 12th January 1988) is known for her participation in an armed revolutionary struggle

Chowdhury was influenced by the revolutionary activities of Ullaskar Dutta, who also lived in Comilla. She was also the member of Tripura Zilla Chhatri Sangha. During this time, she was known by the alias of 'Meera Devi'.

On 14 December 1931, Chowdhury and Santi Ghose, both 16 at that time, walked into the office of Charles Geoffrey Buckland Stevens, a British bureaucrat and the district magistrate of Comilla, under the pretense that they wanted to present a petition to arrange a swimming competition amongst their classmates. While Stevens looked at the document, Ghose and Chowdhury removed automatic pistols which were hidden under their shawls and shot and killed him

The girls were taken into custody and imprisoned in the local British jail.In February 1932. Being a minor, both of them were sentenced to jail for 10 years

She was released with Santi Ghose in 1939, after having served seven years of her sentence, because of the amnesty negotiations between  Gandhi and the British colonial authorities.

Madan Mohan Malaviya
(25th December, 1861 - 12th November, 1946)

🔷Remembering the eminent educationist and social reformer on his death anniversary.

🔷He established Banaras Hindu University and founded 'The Leader' newspaper in Allahabad. He was conferred with Bharat Ratna in 2014

🔷 He was president of the Indian National Congress four times and the founder of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha

🔷 Malaviya was one of the founders of The Bharat Scouts and Guides.

🔷 In protest against the Communal Award to provide separate electorates for minorities, Malaviya and Madhav Shrihari Aney left the Congress and started the Congress Nationalist Party.

🔷 When the British government promulgated The Newspaper (Incitement to Offences) Act in 1908 and the Indian Press Act, 1910, Malaviya started a campaign against them and called for an All India Conference in Allahabad

🔷 The slogan "Satyameva Jayate" (Truth alone triumphs) is also a legacy of Malaviya. Presiding over the Indian National Congress session of 1918 at Delhi, he declared that this phrase from the Mundaka Upanishad should be the slogan for the nation

🔷 Malaviya only donned his lawyer's robe once more, in 1924 following the Chauri Chaura incident. The sessions court had sentenced 170 persons to the gallows for the attack. However, Malaviya defended them in the Allahabad High Court and was able to save 155 of them.

📍Surendranath Banerjee
(10th November, 1848 - 6th August, 1925)

🔷Remembering the prominent nationalist leader on his death anniversary.

🔷Popularly known as Rashtraguru, he founded the pioneer nationalist organisation in British India "Indian National Association" in 1876.

🔷He was the second Indian to qualify the Indian Civil Service examinations, and was appointed to a post in Sylhet in his homeland; however, in 1874 he was dismissed for a minor and apparently inadvertent procedural error.

🔷In 1879, he bought the newspaper, The Bengalee(founded in 1862 by Girish Chandra Ghosh) and edited it for 40 years

🔷 With many liberal leaders he left Congress and founded a new organisation named Indian National Liberation Federation in 1919

🔷He was known as the Indian Burke. For his tenacity he was called 'Surrender Not Banerjee' by the British.

🔷He was elected the Congress President in 1895 at Poona and in 1902 at Ahmedabad.

🔷 His defeat at the polls in 1923 brought his political career to a close and he went on to write the widely acclaimed A Nation in Making, published in 1925.
