World Wildlife Day is a global event which is marked annually to celebrate and promote awareness of the planet’s wild fauna and flora.

History
On December 20, 2013 — at its 68th session — the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed March 3 as UN World Wildlife Day.

Significance
- The day is crucial as climate change and several other factors have posed serious dangers to wildlife, endangering several species.
- According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, over 8,400 species of wild fauna and flora are critically endangered.
- Around 30, 000 more are understood to be endangered or vulnerable.
- It is believed that over a million species are threatened with extinction.

What are endangered species?
- An endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction.
- Species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and loss of genetic variation.

What is the Red List?
- The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) keeps a “Red List of Threatened Species.”
- The Red List defines the severity and specific causes of a species’ threat of extinction.
- The Red List has seven levels of conservation: least concern, near threatened, vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered, extinct in the wild, and extinct.

What are extinct species?
- Extinction is the complete disappearance of a species from Earth.
- When a species becomes extinct, all its genetic heritage is lost.
