For old SAR devices, which are characterized by no RamDisk and the root directory /dev/root is directly mounted by the kernel, when upgraded to a new Android version that no longer supports old SAR, third-party ROMs have two options:
1. Switch to modern 2SI mode
2. Keep old SAR mode
For case 1, many third-party ROMs do not filter the skip_initramfs flag from the kernel parameters, causing magisk to still identify it as old SAR and fail to boot.
In recent versions, magisk completely ignores the skip_initramfs flag and selects 2SI or old SAR mode by judging whether the RamDisk contains 2SI-related features. However,
For case 2, the RamDisk may also exist and meet the 2SI characteristics. Because it is not actually used, the third-party ROM may inherit the AOSP content instead of being empty.
In the end, we believe that there is no simple heuristic method to determine which mode the device actually adopts. It was decided to roll back support for 2SI devices with skip_initramfs kernel parameters in the official version and restore the old behavior. Note that these behavior changes do not affect standard devices, only third-party ROMs may be affected.
In the next major version, magisk will detect /dev/root and write configuration files when patching boot, eliminating the guessing at boot time.
