FROM HOMELESS TO AN INDOOR ONE. Cats in Hermitage
In 2016, the Hermitage cats were included in the list of attractions that, according to the British publication Telegraph, must be seen. According to legend, they are looked after by fairy-tale little people - Hermits and Hermitesses. They live in museums and old houses, and at night they play with the cats and knit "magic scarves" from their wool.
The first cat named Vasily was brought to the royal chambers by Peter I. In 1745, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna decided to catch the pests and ordered 30 of the best big cats from Kazan. The founder of the Hermitage, Empress Catherine II, did not like them, but she left them in the museum, dividing them into two classes - "outdoor" and "indoor".
After the war 1941-1945 five thousand cats were brought to Leningrad, some of them ended up in the Hermitage. Soon the rats disappeared from the museum spaces.

A charming and very rare cub was born at the Moscow Zoo

At the Moscow Zoo, zoologists are nursing a tiny and charming baby. This is a cub of the rarest species of hyenas - the brown hyena. He was born in the summer, but the zoo management did not advertise the news, because it was associated with great excitement. The fact is that the baby's mother - a young female Lada - died after giving birth from bleeding. Veterinarians fought for her life with all their might, but could not save her, the press service of the Moscow Zoo reports.
Brown hyenas Hermes and Lada appeared at the Moscow Zoo in the summer of 2023. This is the first case of keeping this species in a zoo in Russia. The brown hyena is listed on the IUCN Red List, with no more than 10,000 individuals remaining in the wild nature

The foundation of the Sretensky Monastery is a wonderful and amazing story. In 1395, the hordes of Timur (Tamerlane), an invincible and cruel conqueror who had captured all of Asia Minor, the Caucasus, Iran, Anatolia, Khorezm, and India, approached Moscow from the south. Moscow did not have the strength to overcome such an invasion. The Primate of the Russian Church, Metropolitan Cyprian, and Grand Duke Vasily I, the eldest son of Dmitry Donskoy, ordered the transfer of the greatest shrine, the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, from the city of Vladimir-on-Klyazma.
On September 8 (August 26, old style), the religious procession with the icon arrived in Moscow, where a prayer service was held on Kuchkovo Field near the wooden Church of St. Mary of Egypt (1385). The chronicle reports: "The entire city came out in front of the icon to meet it." Muscovites, young and old, cried and asked the Holy Mother of God for help.
That same night, Tamerlane saw in a dream how a pillar of light descended from heaven to earth, a majestic Wife appeared in it, surrounded by a countless army of angels, and commanded him to leave the Moscow region. The advisers explained to the frightened khan: this Wife is the Mother of the Christian God, the Intercessor of the Russians, and Her power is invincible. Tamerlane was so amazed by the vision that he turned his troops to the south and attacked the Khan of the Golden Horde Tokhtamysh, to whom Moscow paid tribute. Thus, the Golden Horde ceased to exist as a single state, which for Rus' became the most important moment in liberation from the yoke.

Emmanuel Kant was not Russian in his roots, he was an East German philosopher, but his words and his science research we study in schools and universities as a part of the world's cultural heritage. Kaliningrad ( Konigsberg) was created by Prussian people 1000 years ago During WWII the town was destroyed absolutely by avia bombs attack of Great Britain aviation. After the war all territory of Prussia was included in the USSR and Poland. We reconstructed Konigsberg and gave the town a new name - Kaliningrad ( grad in Russian language means " city, town")
