You can complain about taxes or learn how the wealthy legally avoid them:

Elon Musk refused a salary & took stock-based pay—lower taxes.

Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary due to capital gains.

James Mwangi of Equity pays more tax on his salary than his dividends, despite earning 3X more from dividends.

The tax code favors investors over employees—play smart

5 Things that most people ignore about SACCOs

1. Share capital is non-redeemable but transferable

2. Savings in your BOSA account are non withdrawable. Only accessible when leaving the SACCO.

3. To save is to deposit money, to access your money you have to take a loan

4. If you are not in a SACCO to access cheap/friendly loans, SACCOs may never make sense to you

5. There are two types of accounts.

a) Front Office Savings Account(FOSA) - Similar to a normal bank account. Savings earn no interest

b) Back Office Savings Account (BOSA) - Savings earn interest called rebates. used to evaluate your loan amount eligibility.

2. Education/endowment policies

The plans try to combine two things in one and end up giving you poor results in both

They try to combine insurance + investments in one

You end up getting a poor life cover and a poor ROI

Solution: Use pure risk products for insurance i.e. whole life insurance

Explanations:

1. Banks savings accounts earn you no interest on your savings.

Most fixed deposit accounts have low interest on savings compared to MMFs and still penalize you when you access your money before the end of the fixed period.

Solution?

Save your money in a MMF:
- Earn an interest on your savings that beats inflation rate
- You have ease access of your savings
- You can hardly lose your mone

When did the NSE become a meme stocks' exchange?

The top performing stock YTD is Trans-Century(+246.2%)

It has a negative book value per share & trades at a negative P/E ratio

The former means its liabilities > assets, hence insolvent while the latter means it's unprofitable.

Gichuki Kahome

02 Feb, 11:25

Kenya's Economy in January 2025

- Headline inflation was at 3.3% up from 3.0% in December

- The Nairobi All share Index(NASI) was up 3.89%
Trans-Century Plc was the top performing stock gaining +246.2%

- Moody's revised Kenya's credit outlook to positive from negative while affirming its Caa1 rating

- T-bill rates saw slight declines with the 91 day T-bill dropping from 9.89% to 9.52%

All eyes are now on the MPC meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 5th Feb.

Do you expect another rate cut?

Saving Avenues:
- Money Market Funds
- SACCOs

Investing Avenues
- Bonds
- Stocks
- ETFs
- Mutual Funds
- Bitcoin
- Real Estate

Don't confuse the two!

Saving is short term, done in highly liquid near cash instruments.

Investing is long term, mostly involving illiquid assets.

5/ For some tap sales, and bonds bought in the secondary market,

The price may as well be a significant factor to look at

As your overall return from the bond will be determined by the price plus the coupon.

Gichuki Kahome

28 Jan, 14:38

For the two IFBs currently on offer, the two bonds are almost identical with a slight variance on the coupon rates which can be explained by the difference in maturity dates.

Hence the main factor to determine would be:
- Coupon payment dates
- Investor's investment horizon

Gichuki Kahome

28 Jan, 14:37

4/ Coupon payment dates.

Every bond pays interest twice a year and the payment dates are pre determined and stated in the bond prospectus.

Since bonds are used by investors mainly to supplement their active incomes or cater for other cash flow needs,

Investors may prefer to receive coupon on certain times of the year compared to others.

Moreover, if you are building a bond ladder, you may want to avoid adding a bond that pays coupons on the same months as other bonds in your portfolio

Gichuki Kahome

28 Jan, 14:37

3/ Coupon rate.

This determines the interest payments that you will receive semi annually until the bonds' maturity.

Generally, longer termed bonds have higher coupon rates due to increased credit risks.

However, sometimes we may have inverted yield curves and the vice versa might happen

Gichuki Kahome

28 Jan, 14:37

2/ Maturity of the bond or the bond's tenor.

This is when you will get your money back

T-bonds are long term debt obligations with maturities ranging from 2-30 years.

Depending with your investment horizon, you can select a bond with a maturity that matches your investment horizon

Gichuki Kahome

28 Jan, 14:37

1. Type of bond.

There are generally two main types of Treasury bonds with the main difference being the tax obligations:

a) Fixed coupon bonds - Subjected to a withholding tax of 10-15 % depending on bond's tenor

Bonds with tenors of less than 10 years - 15% withholding tax

Bonds with tenors of more than 10 years - 10% Withholding tax

b) Infrastructure bonds. Investors love them as they are tax free.

Gichuki Kahome

28 Jan, 14:36

Getting questions on which among the two IFBs is better to invest in and why:

When it comes to T-bonds, more so when buying directly via CBK,

Only a few factors actually matter when choosing which T-bond to invest in:

These include:

Gichuki Kahome

You can be Asset Rich but Cash poor.

Asset rich - You own assets like land, real estate that contribute significantly to your wealth.

Cash Poor - Despite having high net worth, you lack sufficient cash or liquid funds to cover immediate expenses, emergencies, or opportunities

Gichuki Kahome

11 Jan, 07:45

The two most important elements of an ideal portfolio are liquidity and cash flow.

Liquidity - How easily you can convert an asset to cash

Cash flow - The amount of cash generated by your portfolio on a regular basis

Cash flow is more important than net worth!

This year has been a tough one financially for households:

1. Increased payroll taxes and deductions reduced disposable incomes

2. High interest rates left borrowers stretching their budgets to accommodate skyrocketing loan repayment installments.

Kenya's economy in November:

1. Inflation was up by 10 basis points to 2.8%

2. The Nairobi All Share Index (NASI) was down by 5.16%(still up 21.08% YTD)

3. The USD strengthened against the KES by 1.18% (KES has gained 22.62% YTD)

4. T-bill rates continued to fall sharply with the 91 day T-bill rates dropping from 13.45% to 11.25% in November alone.

All eyes are now on the next meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) which will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2024

How do you manage black tax without ruining your relationships with your family and friends?

1. Only give what you can manage. Don't sabotage your financial goals to help others.

There's a limit to how much you can give.

2. Lend amounts you are comfortable okay not getting paid back.

Relationships are ruined by financial obligations like debt.

3. Set and maintain healthy boundaries to where you can help and where you can't.

This will help you stay focused on your financial goals.

Gichuki Kahome

18 Nov, 05:27

Close friends or family members may be aware of things you’re spending money on.

Rent you pay, cars you drive, vacations, etc hence make judgements about what you can or can’t afford.

Which is the best place to save your money?

1. Money market funds are good for liquidity and ease of access

2. SACCOs are good if you would like to use your savings to get a loan

3. Banks savings accounts earn you little or no interest on your savings

4. Banks's fixed deposit accounts may penalize you on accessing your money before maturity.

5. Saving with apps like Chumz gamify and make saving fun and goal based by incorporating behavioral finance.

Where do you save your money?

Gichuki Kahome

03 Nov, 09:54

Do note that:
1. I have only considered cash generating assets. Capital gains from some of these assets above isn't considered.

2. I have only considered investing in financial assets.

You can also invest in yourself, a business, a startup or anything else that is of value to you.

3. The above are mostly low risk assets that earn you income passively(without you getting involved)

you can obviously get higher returns in more riskier avenues or in avenues where you are getting more involved e.g. running a business

Gichuki Kahome

03 Nov, 09:54

1M in a MMF with an annual yield of 14% will give you a return of 124K after taxes

1M in SACCO savings with a rebate(interest on deposits) of 10% will give you 95K after taxes

1M in SACCO share capital with a dividend yield of 14% will give you a return of 133K per annum after taxes.

1M in the average rental property in Kenya with a rental yield of 7% will give you 70K in rental income per annum

1M in a dividend king like KenGen at the NSE will give you 161K in dividend income after taxes(current dividend yield of 17%)

One of the biggest regrets that people have with their personal finances is:

"I have nothing to show for my 10-20 years of working despite earning a good income & even getting pay increments severally."

Why does this happen and why do so many people end up in this?👇

All those people discrediting Kenya Power's reports should at least read their financial statements before commenting.

The turnaround by Kenya Power was expected by investors.

That's why the stock is up +146% YTD as of close of trading day, yesterday.

Majorly because it was expected there would be a significant reduction in finance costs due to the strengthening of the KES this year as majority of Kenya power's loan book is in USD.

But the profitability this year was majorly attributed to increased revenue which is probably tied to increased tariffs the 400K+ customers.
