The Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) announced the successful downing of a U.S. MQ-9 drone over Al-Bayda province, claiming it was engaged in hostile activities. The operation was confirmed on Saturday by YAF spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree.

In a televised statement, Saree revealed that the drone was intercepted using a domestically-produced surface-to-air missile. He emphasized that this marks the thirteenth such drone shot down since the YAF intensified its military operations in solidarity with Gaza.

The incident underscores escalating tensions and the YAF’s growing reliance on indigenous missile systems to counter foreign aerial activities.

FT - Russia’s experimental “Oreshnik” ballistic missile, which it fired at Ukraine last month, was made by companies that still rely on advanced western manufacturing technology, according to analysis by the Financial Times.

Two developers of the weapon, the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology and Sozvezdie, have both been advertising for workers familiar with metalworking systems made by German and Japanese companies — illustrating how the Kremlin remains critically dependent on foreign equipment covered by western sanctions.

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur confirmed the operation, saying it was necessary to secure the connection with Finland.

“We aim to keep this critical link operational and avoid further incidents,” Pevkur stated.

The Finnish investigation alleges that the Eagle S, registered in the Cook Islands, deliberately damaged EstLink 2.

Authorities believe the tanker’s unsecured anchor struck the cable. The ship, suspected of being part of Russia’s "shadow fleet," is under scrutiny for sanctions evasion.

The vessel is suspected of damaging the Estlink 2 submarine cable in the Baltic Sea.

"Eagle S, a Russian-linked tanker suspected of damaging an underwater electrical cable on Christmas, was equipped with special transmitting and receiving devices that were used to monitor naval activity, according to a source directly related to the vessel,"the magazine writes.

It is noted that Eagle S was boarded by Finnish law enforcement officers investigating sabotage on the Estlink 2 underwater cable, as a result of which the power supply to Estonia from Finland.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is expected to announce that it will send $1.25 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, U.S. officials said Friday, as the Biden administration pushes to get as much aid to Kyiv as possible before leaving office on Jan. 20.

The large package of aid includes a significant amount of munitions, including for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems and the HAWK air defense system. It also will provide Stinger missiles and 155 mm- and 105 mm artillery rounds, officials said.

The officials, who said they expect the announcement to be made on Monday, spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet made public.

NYT - So far, the missiles have been effective in limited ways, but they have not changed the war’s trajectory, senior NATO officials said.

The war has also not escalated as some had feared. Although Russia launched a powerful new intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile at a Ukrainian weapons facility after the first two volleys of Western long-range missiles, it has since responded to them with its usual mix of drones, missiles and threats.

Two U.S. officials said they believed Russia was trying to avoid escalating military operations in Ukraine, especially with the election of Mr. Trump, a longtime skeptic of the war, and given Russia’s recent battlefield successes. They spoke on the condition of anonymity given the political sensitivities.

CNN - Russia is intensifying its air war in Ukraine. A secretive factory is ramping up drone production to fuel the offensive.

As the onslaught escalates, CNN has discovered new details about the expansion of a secretive factory fueling Moscow’s drone war. The plant at the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, in Russia’s southern Tatarstan region, has significantly scaled up its production of Iranian-designed attack and surveillance drones.

The sources, who spoke to CNN anonymously out of fear for their safety, said that the factory is now also producing thousands of “decoy” drones, designed to exhaust Ukrainian defenses. Satellite imagery analyzed by CNN and experts shows that two additional buildings have been constructed at the site, and security increased.

AP - Finland stops Russia-linked vessel over damaged undersea power cable in Baltic Sea. A video circulating online shows a Chinese merchant ship. If the sabotage really took place using conventional weapons, it suggests that the potential for attacks on coastal infrastructure is increasing exponentially in the future.

US President-elect Donald Trump is attempting to shift the responsibility of providing military aid to Ukraine onto European countries. At the same time, he plans to reduce US support, reports The Washington Post.

The WP reminded readers that this holiday season marks the third in a row since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It also suggested that Trump's promise to negotiate a ceasefire leaves "many questioning if there will be a fourth."

"Trump is already pressuring European nations to increase aid to Ukraine while signaling that security assistance from the United States — Ukraine’s biggest backer — will decline," the WP stated.

Iraq bought a South Korean helicopter. Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI)'s Surion, the first helicopter developed in Korea, has succeeded in exporting for the first time. The target country is Iraq, with exports of about 135.7 billion won.

Earlier, in 2013, Baghdad purchased 24 FA-50 light attack aircraft in the T-50IQ modification from KAI. In September 2024, a $2.8 billion contract was signed with the South Korean company LIG Nex1 for the supply of Cheongung-II medium-range air defense systems (M-SAM II) to strengthen the country's air defense.

Iraq acquires new helicopters against the backdrop of the sudden decommissioning of the Mi-8/17 due to the lack of spare parts and maintenance, which therefore require replacement. In September 2024, 12 units of the H225M Caracal were purchased from Airbus at an estimated cost of $35 million.

British Army tests radiofrequency weapon on drones for the first time. The RFDEW (Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon) system is capable of neutralizing targets at a distance of up to 1 km with an almost instantaneous effect and an approximate cost of 10 pence per shot, which is a cost-effective addition to traditional missile-based air defense systems.

This system is capable of detecting, tracking and defeating a number of threats on land, in the air and at sea. It differs from weapons of directed laser energy, such as DragonFire, in that it uses radio frequency, and not a laser beam of light energy, to suppress hostile threats.

The weapon uses high-frequency waves to disrupt or damage critical electronic components inside devices such as drones, causing them to be immobilized or fall from the sky. Ego can also be used against threats on land and at sea.

The US Navy adopted the submarine SSN 797 Iowa - the next, 24th Virginia-class attack submarine. It was built according to the Block IV project, which provides for the reduction of the number of major repairs during the service life of the submarine from 4 to 3, which should increase the efficiency of the submarine's operation. The General Dynamics Electric Boat company is to deliver a total of 10 submarines of this type to the US Navy under a 2014 contract worth $17.6 billion (Block V is also under construction). Iowa is the 6th submarine of the Block IV project and the 12th warship delivered to the US Navy this year. In addition to Iowa, they received, in particular, Virginia-class submarine (Block II) SSN 783 Minnesota after overhaul.

In 2015, when Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Syria at the request of dictator Bashar al-Assad, he had several goals in mind. He wanted to help Russia escape the international isolation it endured following its annexation of Crimea in 2014. He sought to return Russia to a position of influence in the Middle East, where its presence had waned after the collapse of the Soviet Union. And he wanted to establish Russia as a global power capable of supporting its allies and halting efforts to topple friendly governments. The intervention in Syria also allowed Russia to assume the role of protector of Christians in the Middle East—a role that, in Putin’s view, decadent Western powers had abdicated, and a mission that fit neatly with Putin’s desire to present Russia as Europe’s last bastion of Christian values.
