"Building Inclusive Communities: ORDA Ethiopia's 2024 GDIYE Program Highlights"
Bahir Dar, Ethiopia – In 2024, ORDA Ethiopia's Gender, Disability inclusion and Youth Employment (GDIYE) Program focused on capacity building, financial services, and supporting enterprises to enhance youth employment. The program formed 22 new youth VESA groups with 474 members (264 female), saving ETB 346,361 and disbursing ETB 547,747 to 723 members (609 female, 3 PWDs) for income-generating activities. Despite challenges, 4010 youths (3410 female, 96 PWDs) were linked to financial institutions, obtaining ETB 4,724,804 in loans. A total of 22,791 new enterprises with 22,857 youth members (18,438 female) were established. Temporary jobs were created for 447 youths (214 female), and permanent/self-employment for 23,622 youths (18,601 female, 1,131 PWDs). Permanent wage employment was created for 192 youths (101 female, 1 PWD).
The program also promoted gender equality by conducting 25 protection and gender analyses and training 106 ORDA Ethiopia staff on gender development. Training was provided to 136 government stakeholders, and community discussions on gender and harmful traditional practices (HTP) were held with 30,609 VESA members (21,392 female). Leadership training was given to 2,219 community members (1,904 female). International Women's Day and 16 days of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) were celebrated with significant participation. Additionally, 619 role models and men advocates were trained to promote gender equality and address social norms.
Disability inclusion was another focus area, resulting in jobless youth starting their own businesses and increased engagement of persons with disabilities in development projects. Key outcomes included improved social norms and behaviour related to women's rights, increased youth income from business ventures, decreased unemployment, and greater understanding of HTP, social norms, and women's participation at household and community levels. Men began sharing responsibilities and appreciating women's roles. Overall, ORDA Ethiopia's GDIYE Program made significant strides in youth employment, gender equality and disabilities inclusion in 2024.
