🧠Stay Informed?!πŸ’©

Did you know that there’s no BFM 89.9 MHz in Penang? When driving in Penang (where MPG is based!), I usually tune into calming music to help soothe the stimulus forced on by the cray cray Penang drivers and motorcyclists 🀑

πŸ‡²πŸ‡ΎWeeks ago in KL, I tuned into BFM for a change
🀯 10 mins later, I felt annoyed, cluttered and distracted.

My mind was getting so much info but so what?

Do we really need to welcome these info into our already loaded brains?

A newfound insight was drawn: Stop following the news.

It’s not a new concept ⬇️

βœ… In Cal Newport’s book β€˜Deep Work’,: uncontrolled consumption of news can clutter our minds, leading to fragmented attention.

βœ… A study from the Canadian Medical Association Journal: constant exposure to negative news can trigger stress and anxiety, which in turn can impact our creativity, mood, and overall productivity.

So, next time you're about to dive into the never-ending news stream, take a pause:
- Maybe our time and mind could be better spent else where
- Not all news are necessary

MPG Quick Reads πŸ“šπŸ“š
I Don’t Know What I Wantβ€¦πŸ˜¬πŸ˜¬

Did you know❓❔
⭕️ A research study found that out of 1042, on average, people find meaning in their lives by the age of 60.
⭕️ People between the ages of 30 and 49 are most likely to find meaning in their job or career.
So, it is perfectly normal to be in the process of soul-searching at this point in life.

That said, make the most of your current opportunities by customising your job to fit your interests 🧩🧩. Be proactive and change up your tasks, interactions at work, and perceptions of your work.

For example, if you were a barista β˜•οΈinterested in event management, you could propose to the manager to include event planning as an offering to customers to explore your interests. If you are an accountant in a large company interested in techπŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ‘©β€πŸ’», reach out to the people in your other departments. Be bold and introduce yourself.

MPG SkillUp Mini-Series - Professional BrandingπŸ“ˆ
(1) Are you Professionally Branded? 🧐
Personal branding is the process of creating a brand identity for a person or a company πŸ¦Έβ€β™€οΈπŸ€΅β€β™€οΈπŸ₯·. A good personal brand gives you a competitive edge in the labour market as it shows employers why it’s worth choosing you over other candidates.

It starts with defining your brand. Identify:

(a) your Uniqueness✨ - What unique perspective do you bring to the organization?;
(b) your Values βš–οΈ - What give your work purpose, or what do you stand for?; and
(c) your Contributions πŸ™Œ - Given your business experience or studies, what can you bring to the table in your industry?.

The combined result of these three elements make up the basics of your personal brand. This is also referred to as Clarity - one of the 5C's of Personal Branding.

πŸ“£This is A Public Service AnnouncementπŸ“£:
Whether you are employed part-time or full-time, you are entitled to annual leave EPF and SOCSO contributions if you are an employee as defined by the Employment Act!!!

Red flags all around if your employer refuses to make EPF and SOCSO contributions (let alone not providing you with your annual or medical leave) 🚩🚩🚩

MPG Quick Read πŸ“šπŸ“š
Choose your Fighter to Disconnect – A brief snapshotπŸ“Έ.
France
πŸ‡«πŸ‡·
Private Sector: Applies to companies with more than 50 employees and a trade union representative.

The right to disconnect will have to be included in mandatory annual negotiations with trade unions. Failing agreement, the employer will have to draw up a unilateral charter after obtaining opinions of the works council or, failing this, the staff delegates.

Penalties will be imposed for the failure to negotiate an agreement. Companies may find itself liable to a one year prison term; a fine up to EU€3,750 for the company’s legal representative; and a fine up to EU€18,750 for the company itself.

BelgiumπŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ
Public Sector: Staff cannot be contacted outside normal working hours except "for exceptional and unforeseen reasons requiring".

Private Sector: Applies only to companies with more than 20 employees. Belgian Employers are required to:
- set out practical arrangements for the right;
- create digital tool guidelines that respect employees' private lives; and
- provide training and raise awareness on the risks of excessive digital technology use.

Employers, so far, will not incur penalties on non-compliance with these laws.

Kenya πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ*
Private Sector: Applies to companies with over 10 employees. Companies shall be required to consult their employees or trade unions when formulating their out-of-work policies.

Where an employer contacts an employee during the period when there is no mutually agreed out-of-work hours, the employee
(a) shall not be obliged to respond and shall have the right to disconnect; and
(b) may choose to respond, for which the employee shall be entitled to get compensation.

Employers who breach the law will be fined US$4000.00.

MPG Quick Reads πŸ“šπŸ“š
"Want your colleagues to stop texting you after work hours πŸ•§ ?"

The right to disconnect
is a proposed human right regarding the ability of people to disconnect from work and not engage in work-related electronic communications during non-work hours. This right has been recognised in countries like BelgiumπŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ and FranceπŸ‡«πŸ‡· and is even pending recognition in KenyaπŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ.

In France, for example, companies with more than 50 employees and a trade union representative have to engage in mandatory annual negotiations with trade unions on their employees' rights to disconnect, in its part on gender equality and quality of life at work. Malaysia was recognised as the third most overworked city in 2022, but our country currently has no law barring or discouraging employers from contacting employees after hours.

πŸ“£ Arguments are made against enshrining this right in our laws; arguing that this would hamper Malaysia's development and ranking in the global economy. However, such arguments have been regarded as superficial as it ignores key benefits that companies stand to derive from increased worker productivity.
