The Social Life of Art by Dr Kiven Strohm

What does art do and how does it do it? This course approaches art as a culturally and historically contingent practice - approaching artworks and the practices of artists and curators from across Southeast Asia as more than objects that simply represent or signify. They are what they make happen: a situation, an encounter, a social relation.

How do crises shape us and our societies? How does art respond to global catastrophes? This class explores tragedy as a lens for understanding identity, resilience, and collective memory by analysing “I Saw It”, Nakazawa Keiji’s graphic novel on surviving Hiroshima.
