✨-4 types important in humans: Mycoplasma pneumoniae(pneumonia and joint infection)
M. hominis ( postpartum fever & uterine tube infections),Ureaplasma urealyticum (nongonococcal urethritis in men &lung disease in premature infants of low birth weight) Mycoplasma genitalium(smallest one,a/w urogenital infections)
✨-lack cell wall : so resistant to cell-wall inhibitors antibiotics like penicillins
✨-sensitive to macrolides,tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones
✨-as it lacks cell wall is highly pleumorphic
✨-in M. pneumoniae : there is eosinophilia in CBC
✨-M. pneumoniae is most common cause of pneumonia in school-age children,its presentation as atypical pneumonia ( low-grade fever, headaches,fever ,cough(non-productive,later on may haemoptysis) ,haemolytic anaemia,on CXR : interstitial infiltration),others: erythema multiforme,meningitis , meningo-encephalitis, and mono- and polyneuritis; myocarditis; pericarditis; arthritis; and pancreatitis.
✨-Dx of M. pneumoniae : throat culture, Cold hemagglutinins,antibodies and PCR
