Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence.”

Robert Frost

Listening to anything without losing temper or self-confidence is a mark of an educated personality; one of the essential characteristics to be an excellent learner as well.
We need to listen without any predisposition to the information being provided and take in facts and ideas.

Without patience, people learn less, experience little, explore less and remain ignorant of any new information in life.

Separate your emotions from intellectual activity as it cripples your ability to take in factual information, ultimately hindering the ability to learn more.

Listen attentively and engage in critical thinking activity without bringing emotions into the discussion.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision and policies laid the foundation for a resilient, self-reliant India during the nation’s critical post-independence years. As India’s first Prime Minister, he faced the formidable challenge of steering a young, impoverished nation, with over 70% of the population below the poverty line and about 85% living in rural areas reliant on low-yield agriculture. Additionally, the aftermath of Partition brought a refugee crisis and communal unrest, compounding these issues.

Nehru believed that addressing these hurdles required modernization through science, industry, and infrastructure. He championed the establishment of institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), beginning with IIT Kharagpur in 1951, to foster technical knowledge and innovation. With the founding of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1942, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1962, and the Atomic Energy Commission in 1948, he laid the groundwork for India’s research capabilities, space exploration, and nuclear energy advancements.

Economic stability was another priority, and Nehru adopted a state-led approach through Five-Year Plans starting in 1951. The First Five-Year Plan focused on agricultural development to address food security and support rural communities, leading to projects like the Bhakra-Nangal Dam, which provided vital irrigation and power. The Second Five-Year Plan (1956-1961) emphasized industrialization, building a manufacturing base through public sector enterprises that generated employment and economic diversity. Although poverty remained high at the end of his tenure, these efforts sparked gradual poverty reduction.

On the global stage, Nehru’s commitment to non-alignment during the Cold War positioned India as an independent player in international affairs, enabling it to receive foreign aid and technology from both superpowers without aligning with either. This diplomatic strategy brought valuable resources while preserving India's sovereignty.

Nehru’s contributions in fostering scientific advancement, industrialization, and neutral diplomacy transformed India’s trajectory from a struggling post-colonial state to a nation centered on scientific values and self-sufficiency. His legacy lives on in institutions like the IITs, ISRO, and CSIR, which continue to shape India’s strengths in technology, space exploration, and economic growth.

Sarvodaya is a term meaning 'Universal Uplift' or 'Progress of All'. The term was first coined by Mohandas Gandhi as the title of his 1908 translation of John Ruskin's tract on political economy, "Unto This Last", and Gandhi came to use the term for the ideal of his own political philosophy. Later Gandhian, like the Indian nonviolence activist Vinoba Bhave, embraced the term as a name for the social movement in post-independence India which strove to ensure that self-determination and equality reached all strata of India society.
