Повеса (повесы)
[pa-ve-sa (pa-ve-sy)]

Meaning:
1. A man who leads a life of leisure, often neglecting responsibilities and prioritizing pleasure above all else, like idle, reckless, self-indulgent.

2. А penchant for women, often suggesting a history of multiple relationships and a lack of commitment, like womanizer, Don Juan.

🔻An 1847 dictionary defines related words like:

Весь [ves']: village, settlement (probably повеса comes from по весям (to walk) around the villages, drinking alcohol and having fun).

Повеса  is also described in old dictionaries as a шалун [sha-lun] a rascal, mischievous person, or ветреник [ve-tri-nik] а fickle person.

🔻Therefore, повеса paints a picture of a lively, perhaps charming, but ultimately irresponsible individual who prioritizes pleasure and romantic pursuits above more serious obligations.

Modern synonym (⚠️a bit rude):

Бабник (бабники)
[bab-nik (bab-ni-ki)]
A womanizer(s)

Родиться в рубашке (perf.)
[rа-di-tsa v ru-bash-ke]
SLT: To be born in a shirt

Meaning:
This idiom describes someone incredibly lucky, someone who always escapes danger or difficult situations unscathed.

English Equivalent:
To be born under a lucky star, born with a silver spoon in one's mouth

Etymology:
The expression likely originates from the belief that babies born enveloped in the amniotic sac (the "shirt") were especially protected and destined for good fortune.

Example:
Ей чудом удалось остаться целой в этой аварии. Она родилась в рубашке!
She miraculously survived that accident. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth!

Sigma is the 18th letter of the Greek alphabet.

🔻In Russia, the idea of a 'sigma male' (Wikipedia) recently emerged: a term from the Internet slang used to describe men who are loners and independent of society.

Those who were close to the leader of the Soviet peoples said that Stalin had an amazing, phenomenal memory.

🔻He read many books and could later quote fairly large paragraphs from them by heart.

🔻During the Great Patriotic War, he knew by heart the coordinates of all troop deployments (which were constantly changing).

🔻Stalin remembered all the military commanders, could quote paragraphs from books, and gave hours-long speeches without notes.

🔻Another indisputable fact: Stalin read 400 pages every day. He set this norm for himself and always fulfilled it whenever possible.

🔻According to those who knew him well, Stalin's favourite book was Machiavelli's "The Prince" and Proudhon's economic works.

🔻How did Stalin train his memory? This "secret" was known to Soviet intelligence officers, special services, and the military leadership of the USSR. It is mnemonics. (Wikipedia)

The State Bank building on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street is one of the most iconic landmarks in Nizhny Novgorod.

🔻This magnificent "терем" (traditional Russian palace) in the Old Russian style was built in 1913 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the State Bank of the Russian Empire and the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.

The first notebooks appeared in the Russian Empire in the 1850s-1870s.

🔻Before that time students wrote their notes on special wooden boards.

🔻Initially, notebooks were ordered from printing houses by stationery stores and did not have any lines inside. The format was a quarter of a typographic sheet.

🔻The cost was 3-5 kopecks. The standard green cover appeared before the October Revolution.

The terms 'ученическая' (literally: student) and 'общая' (literally: general) were used, depending on the number of sheets.

🔻Squared paper was used for arithmetic, lines - for writing.

🔻This verb implies giving something back to someone, or returning it:

Человек, отдай мне моё мясо!
Man, give me back my meat!

2⃣ПЕРЕдать
[pi-ri-dat']
To pass on, to convey

🔻This verb is used when you transfer something from one person to another, often with the intention of communication:

Pass me the meat, please.

3⃣НЕДОдать
[ni-da-dat']
Тo undergive, to fail to give enough

🔻This verb indicates that someone has not given enough of something:

• Он недодал коту еды.
He didn't give the cat enough food.

So, "дать" is the most versatile and general verb. "Отдать" implies returning something. "Передать" focuses on transferring something, often with a message. "Недодать" indicates that something was not given in full.

Nikolai Fomich Pechenenko (born in 1930) met victory in May 1945 in Austria. He returned home with medals. He was only fifteen years old that year.

🔻Several times, the nazis led him out to be executed. They put a noose around his neck, knocked the support out from under his feet, and he... fell to the ground. They laughed and hooted. The fascists amused themselves by cutting the rope – they watched the fear of the child who was ready to die. They poured icy water on the unconscious boy, brought him back to his senses, and then threw him in the basement. Several times the Gestapo "joked" in this way, and in between their amusements, they beat him, drove matches under his nails. After another "execution," Kolya was paralyzed. The partisans saved him: they found him lying in a dugout, blue from beatings, with his teeth knocked out.

🔻After the war he wrote books with a pen held in his teeth, as he had complete paralysis of his limbs.

The foundation of this mural in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is an archival photo of the Chekhov family, taken shortly before his trip to Sakhalin.

🔻He's about to turn 30, his brother, a painter, has recently passed away, and the question increasingly pops up in his mind - what will remain? After his brother - paintings, and after him?

🔻The journey through Siberia took 82 days. On Sakhalin, Chekhov spent several months taking the census, he interacted with practically everyone on the island, including the convicts. Then - a long sea journey through Vladivostok, Singapore, the Suez Canal. Upon his return, Chekhov stops collaborating with journals as a writer of feuilletons, and in the next 10 years, writes "The Seagull," "Uncle Vanya," and "Ward No. 6."

🔻The author of the street art work is Alexander Demkin, circles on the water and distortions of images are his signature technique, this work has it particularly symbolically.

The past, washed away by the rains of time.

🥞Today is День Оладушек - an informal Russian holiday! It's dedicated to one of the most beloved and traditional dishes of Russian cuisine:

Оладушки (deminutive, plural)
[a-la-dush-ki]
from
Оладьи (plural)
[a-la-d'yi]
Pancakes

🔻Оладушки are fluffy, thick pancakes that are often referred to as "Russian fritters." They are typically made with a yeast dough, similar to American pancakes, and often include ingredients like milk, eggs, flour, and sugar. Оладушки are usually served with sour cream, jam, or honey.

🔻Note the difference:
Блины
[bli-ny]
(Russian) blinis

🔻Блины are thin, crepe-like pancakes made from a buckwheat or wheat flour batter. Блины can be savory or sweet and are often rolled, filled, or topped with a variety of ingredients like smoked salmon, caviar, sour cream.

😋The key difference? Оладушки are thicker and fluffier, while блины are thinner and more delicate.

Have you ever tried Russian оладушки? Check the attached link!

The Lena Pillars: A Natural Wonder in Siberia

🔻The Lena Pillars are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Sakha Republic in eastern Siberia, Russia.

🔻This natural wonder consists of towering rock formations that rise dramatically from the banks of the Lena River, forming a breathtaking and awe-inspiring landscape.

🔻The pillars are made of Cambrian limestone, which was formed over 540 million years ago. Erosion from the Lena River over millions of years has carved these majestic formations, creating a variety of shapes and sizes.

🔻Some pillars are as tall as 100 meters, with intricate patterns and textures that seem to defy gravity.

🔻The Lena Pillars are accessible by boat from the town of Yakutsk, the capital of Sakha Republic. There are also hiking trails that offer spectacular views of the pillars. Visitors can explore the surrounding area and learn about the history and culture of the Yakut people.

Cypress Lake: A hidden gem in Russia's Black Sea coast

🔻Sukko Valley, on the outskirts of which cypresses grow directly in the water, is located near Anapa, 40 meters above sea level.

🔻Due to the dam built in 1935 on the river, a 8-hectare Cypress Lake was created.

🔻The origin of the cypress trees on the reservoir is not precisely established. Perhaps the trees were planted by natives of California.

🔻There is another hypothesis about cypress seeds brought from Mexico in the 1930s, which were planted as an experiment in the forest zone, and after the dam on the river, the trees were flooded.

🔻Whether you're looking to reconnect with nature, enjoy a peaceful walk, or simply admire the beauty of ancient trees, Cypress Lake in Sukko is a must-visit destination.

The classic of English literature, Lewis Carroll, author of the famous fairy tales "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" in July-August 1867, made a short trip to Russia.

🔻The main purpose of his trip was to strengthen ties between the Anglican and Russian Orthodox Churches.

🔻During his time in the country, the writer managed to visit St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Nizhny Novgorod.

🔻As an example of the unusually long words that distinguish the Russian language, he wrote down the following:

Защищающихся (those who protect themselves)
which, if written in English letters, would look like this: zashtsheeshtschayjushtsheekhsya

Can you read this Russian word?

Swallow's Nest Castle, nestled on a sheer cliff overlooking the Black Sea in Crimea, is a sight that will take your breath away.

🔻The castle was built in 1912 by a wealthy Russian industrialist,  Baron von Steingel.

🔻The original structure was a small wooden villa, but it was later replaced with a more elaborate stone castle, drawing inspiration from medieval German architecture.

🔻Sadly, the castle was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1927.

🔻Despite its beautiful exterior, the palace is still at risk of collapse. The cliff beneath it was once cracked, and a large piece of it has already fallen into the water.

🔻The landmark has often appeared on movie screens.

🔻There is a flooded cave in the cliff beneath the Swallow's Nest. Many archaeologists believe that ancient people may have once lived here. One of the walls there is coal black.

🔻The castle is very compact in size. It occupies only 120 square meters, but it is 12 meters high.

🔻Reflexive verbs are used to indicate the concept of ‘self’, where the subject and the object are actually the same person.

🔻Reflexive verbs are always intransitive (have no object):
Кошка умывает (кого?) котёнка.
But
Котёнок умывается.

🔻Reflexive verbs are formed by adding -СЯ to the stem of a verb (or sometimes to a noun):
одевать (to dress)
одеваться (to dress oneself)
Or
нужда (a need)
нуждатьСЯ (to need)

🔻To form some reflexive verbs you need a prefix and -СЯ:

дышать (to breathe)
ОТдышатьСЯ (to catch one's breath)
Or
думать (to think)
ЗАдуматьСЯ (to be lost in thought)

🔻There are verbs that are only used in the reflexive form:

• нравиться (всем) - to be liked (by everyone)
гордиться - to be proud
• трудиться - to work hard
• распоряжаться - to manage
• оставаться - to stay
• надеяться - to hope
• улыбаться - to smile
• бороться - to fight
• кланяться - to bow
• ложиться - to lie down/go to bed
