👃 What does space smell like?

Weirdly enough, it’s not nothing—and astronauts have noticed some surprising scents! 🌌

After spacewalks, astronauts have reported smells like burnt steak, welding fumes, or gunpowder clinging to their spacesuits. But how can a vacuum with no air have a scent?

👉 Here’s one explanation: Ultraviolet rays from the Sun break up oxygen molecules (O2) near the ISS, creating individual oxygen atoms. These atoms stick to spacesuits and trigger chemical reactions, including ozone—a gas with a sharp, burnt smell.

👉 Another explanation? Space itself! Dying stars release molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which smell like charred foods—think burnt toast or grilled meat. These PAHs cling to spacesuits, giving astronauts a literal whiff of the universe!

Google just announced a crazy new quantum computing chip. It can solve a problem in 5 minutes that would take one of the fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years! BUT that problem was a “benchmark” problem called RCS, chosen specifically because it’s extremely hard for a supercomputer - which are still better at basically everything practical.

The real reason you should care about quantum computers and this new chip is less about beating supercomputers at things they’re already great at and more about doing new things - like really accurate simulations of nature at a quantum level that could be used for drug discovery or battery development or more.

Meet WOH G64: the largest star we've ever imaged outside our Galaxy! 🪐

This red supergiant lives in the Large Magellanic Cloud and is up to 2,000 times the size of our Sun—big enough to stretch all the way to Saturn if it were in our Solar System! 🌌

But there’s more: WOH G64 is surrounded by a mysterious dust cloud that’s oddly shaped. Could it be gas jets? A hidden companion star? Scientists aren’t sure yet! 🤔

And because it’s in a low-metallicity galaxy, this star gives us fresh insights into stellar evolution in different environments. One day, it’ll go supernova, enriching its galaxy with heavy elements. For now, though, we get to witness its dramatic finale! 💥

An international team of astronomers recently uncovered a unique system named J1721+8842. This isn’t just any gravitational lens—it’s the first-ever compound lens made by the alignment of two galaxies!

Why does this matter? Well, this discovery could help scientists more accurately measure the Hubble constant, potentially resolving a major debate in cosmology. Who knew that two galaxies aligning perfectly could unlock new secrets of the universe?

Scientists trained a machine learning system on brain scans from four participants as they viewed thousands of photos. These brain scans gathered information from two regions of the brain: one that registers the contents of an image and another that registers the layout and perspective...

NASA just launched a mission to look for alien life on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. The reason scientists think it might have life starts with the fact that deep beneath its icy surface
evidence suggests there might be a huge saltwater ocean, with about twice as much water as all of Earth’s oceans combined....

Breaking space news!! 👉Astronomers have spotted the biggest pair of black hole jets ever seen in the universe!

😳The jets stretch for around 23 million light-years, well beyond the limits of their host galaxy and stretching as long as 140 Milky Way galaxies lined up from end to end.

📌This latest finding suggests that these giant jet systems may have had a larger influence on the formation of galaxies in the young universe than previously believed. ‘ Porphyrion’ existed during an early epoch when the wispy filaments that connect and feed galaxies, known as the cosmic web, were closer together than they are now. That means enormous jets like Porphyrion reached across a greater portion of the cosmic web compared to jets in the local universe.

When lightning strikes a building without a lightning rod, a large amount of current passes through the building and can damage it. If a lightning rod is present, then instead of travelling through the building, lightning will pass through the lightning rod and dissipate into the ground, leaving the building unharmed.

While lightning rods help protect a structure from a direct lightning strike, a complete lightning protection system is needed to help prevent harmful electrical surges and possible fires caused by lightning entering a structure via wires and pipes.
