⚙️ RedNote, Flip, Clapper and Likee claim the top of the App Store as TikTok comes back online

As TikTok returns online after a brief ban, several competing apps have surged in popularity, dominating the App Store's top charts. RedNote (Xiaohongshu) has claimed the No. 1 spot, gaining 700,000 new U.S. users during the TikTok ban. Other apps like Clapper, Flip, and Likee also ranked high, with Clapper and Likee taking the No. 4 and No. 2 spots, respectively.

The TikTok outage prompted users to explore alternatives, signaling a preference for Chinese apps over Instagram. 📲 Biden slams Meta's 'shameful' decision to end fact-checking on Facebook, Instagram
#news #Insta

President Joe Biden has condemned Meta's decision to end third-party fact-checking on Facebook and Instagram, calling it "shameful." This move has raised global concerns about misinformation and its potential negative impact, especially if adopted worldwide.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will replace fact-checking with a community-driven model called "Community Notes," similar to one used by X (formerly Twitter). Critics, including the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), warn that discontinuing fact-checking could lead to real-world harm, such as political instability and violence.

Zuckerberg defended the change, suggesting the previous fact-checking program fostered distrust and was politically biased. This policy shift has prompted international scrutiny, with countries like Brazil demanding explanations from Meta. There are fears that the changes could increase hate speech and online harassment.

📲 What is Community Notes, and how will it work on Facebook and Instagram?
#news #Insta

Meta is replacing its independent fact-checking program with a community-driven initiative similar to Twitter's (now X) Community Notes. This new system will allow users on Facebook and Instagram to monitor content collaboratively.

In X's model, approved contributors can annotate posts they consider false or misleading, providing additional context. For a note to be visible, it must be deemed helpful by a diverse group of other contributors, as determined by an algorithm that assesses the ideological spectrum of the voters.

Meta has yet to provide specific details on how this will work on its platforms, but the shift aims to empower users to combat misinformation directly. The approach has raised concerns about potential biases and the visibility of valid notes, especially if they don't receive enough diverse support.

This change is part of a broader strategy by Meta to prioritize free expression over strict content controls. 📲 Facebook and Instagram get rid of fact checkers
#news #Insta

Meta is replacing independent fact-checkers on Facebook and Instagram with a user-driven moderation system called "community notes," similar to a feature on X (formerly Twitter). CEO Mark Zuckerberg criticized third-party moderators as "too politically biased" and emphasized a return to free expression. This change comes amid efforts to improve relations with the incoming Trump administration, which has previously criticized Meta's fact-checking policies as censorship.

Campaigners against online hate speech expressed concern that this shift could facilitate misinformation and harmful content. The new system allows users to comment on the accuracy of posts, replacing the previous model where independent organizations assessed credibility. While Meta plans to implement this in the U.S. first, it will maintain fact-checkers in the UK and EU for now.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the change could lead to a trade-off, resulting in less effective moderation, and noted that it reflects a broader political shift in tech governance, prioritizing free speech over stringent content controls.

📲 Meta’s Experimenting With ‘Avatar Quests’ as It Builds Towards the Metaverse
#news #Insta

Meta is experimenting with "Avatar Quests," which aim to enhance user engagement through interactive games and exploration using digital avatars. This initiative is part of Meta's broader vision for the metaverse, where avatars will play a central role in social interactions.

Following a previous overemphasis on the metaverse in 2021, Meta has shifted focus to AI integration while still developing avatar capabilities. The company is enhancing avatar customization and introducing new ways for users to interact with their avatars in various applications.

As Meta seeks to familiarize users with avatar experiences, it plans to roll out more features on platforms like Facebook and Instagram in the coming years, aligning with how gamers currently engage with 3D characters in gaming worlds. The goal is to prepare users for more immersive experiences in the metaverse.

📲 Instagram teases AI tools for editing appearances, backgrounds in videos using prompts
#news #Insta

Instagram is set to introduce new generative AI tools that will allow users to edit their videos using text prompts. Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, announced these features, powered by Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, which will enable creators to change various aspects of their videos, including outfits, backgrounds, and appearances.

In a preview, Mosseri demonstrated how users could transform their environments and even their appearances, such as altering backgrounds to snowy scenes or animating themselves. While the demonstrations appeared seamless, it remains unclear if the final user-facing tools will achieve the same results.

This announcement follows the launch of similar AI models by OpenAI and Adobe, indicating a growing trend in AI-powered video editing capabilities. The new tools are expected to roll out in 2025.

📲 Meta Pushes Ahead on AI Development Despite Risks
#news #Insta

Meta is advancing its AI development despite acknowledging the associated risks. While the company is integrating generative AI tools across its platforms, leaders like Instagram's Adam Mosseri warn about the challenges in distinguishing AI-generated content from reality. Mosseri emphasizes the need for users to critically assess content, although he acknowledges that many may not do so.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg anticipates a future where much of the content on Facebook and Instagram will be AI-generated, pushing the company to enhance its AI capabilities. However, concerns remain about potential misinformation and the impact of AI on human relationships, especially with conversational AI tools. The article highlights the need for proactive assessment of AI's societal impacts before widespread adoption, drawing parallels to past discussions about social media's harms.

📲 Threads starts testing scheduled posts
#news #Insta

Threads is testing a new feature that allows users to schedule posts, as announced by Instagram's Adam Mosseri. However, replies cannot be scheduled to maintain real-time conversation dynamics. Mosseri emphasized that this feature has been in development for months, countering suggestions that competition with Bluesky drives all updates.

Additionally, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Threads has surpassed 100 million daily active users and over 300 million monthly active users. This marks the platform's first public disclosure of daily user figures, indicating its growth as a competitor to Twitter/X.

📲 You can now schedule a DM on Instagram
#news #Insta

Instagram has introduced a new feature that allows users to schedule direct messages (DMs). By long-pressing the "send" button, users can select a specific date and time for their messages, which can only include text. Photos, videos, and GIFs must still be sent in real-time.

Users will receive a notification displaying how many messages they have scheduled, and they can delete or send these messages immediately if desired. Currently, messages can be scheduled up to 29 days in advance. This update is part of Instagram's ongoing efforts to enhance its messaging features, which also include options to edit messages, draw on photos, and share live locations.

📲 Instagram’s head says social media needs more context because of AI
#news #Insta

In recent posts on Threads, Instagram head Adam Mosseri warned users about the unreliability of online images due to AI-generated content that can easily be mistaken for real. He emphasized the importance of considering the source and stated that social platforms have a responsibility to label AI-generated content. Mosseri acknowledged that some AI content may go unlabeled, so platforms should also provide context about the content's origin to help users gauge its trustworthiness.

His comments suggest a move toward user-led moderation, similar to features seen on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube. While it remains unclear if Meta will implement similar measures, the company has a history of adopting ideas from other platforms.

📲 Meta Expands Penalty Avoidance Education to Instagram Creators
#news #Insta

Meta is expanding its initiative, initially launched on Facebook, to help creators avoid penalties for rule violations on Instagram. Under this new approach, first-time offenders of minor offenses can bypass penalties by completing a brief educational course about the platform's Community Standards.

Meta acknowledges that many users unintentionally violate rules and aims to improve understanding rather than solely punish. The program allows users to erase their first strike and any resulting restrictions after completing the course. Meta reports that this strategy has led to a 15% increase in users feeling they understand Facebook's policies better, which in turn reduces future violations.

However, this option does not apply to serious violations, such as those involving sexual exploitation or the sale of dangerous drugs. The update was recommended by Meta's independent Oversight Board, which has criticized the company's strict enforcement approach. This educational method mirrors practices used by YouTube, focusing on user awareness while maintaining content activity on the platforms. Meta plans to adjust the program as necessary in the future.

📲 Instagram Tests Scheduled DMs
#news #Insta

Social media expert Lindsey Gamble shared that some Android users can now schedule direct messages (DMs) on Instagram, allowing them to choose a date and time for sending messages. This feature can help brands target their outreach more effectively across different time zones and streamline content planning.

To schedule a DM, users can create a message in a chat and long-press the send button to access scheduling options. This tool could enhance audience engagement, especially as DMs are increasingly important for Instagram interactions.

While users could also opt to use AI bots for responding to DMs, this approach may come off as spammy and impersonal. Meta is exploring AI bots that mimic creators and even video chat bots, which some may find excessive. For small businesses, scheduling DMs might prove valuable once the feature is widely available.

🚨 The extremely online life of the American teenager
#news #Insta

A new Pew survey reveals that nearly half of U.S. teens are "almost constantly" online, with distinct preferences for different platforms. YouTube remains the most popular site, used by 90% of the 1,391 teens surveyed, though this is a slight drop from 95% in 2022. Seventy-three percent use YouTube daily. TikTok follows as the second-most popular platform, used by 63% of teens, with notable gender differences in usage frequency.

Despite high engagement with video and image-based platforms, other sites see much lower usage: only 6% of teens use Threads, and Facebook's usage has plummeted from 71% a decade ago to 32%. Instagram is the only Meta product used by a majority of teens, while X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit are even less popular, at 17% and 14%, respectively. Additionally, Snapchat's popularity is waning, while WhatsApp has seen a rise in usage, now at 23% among teens.

📲 Meta’s Testing Options To Hide Like Counts on Reels, Replies on Threads
#news #Insta

Meta is testing new features on Instagram and Threads to give users more control over how their engagement metrics are displayed. On Instagram, users may soon be able to hide view counts on their Reels, which could encourage viewers to explore more content rather than just the most popular clips. Meanwhile, Threads is testing an option to remove users' replies from their profiles, allowing only "Threads" and "Reposts" to be visible.

These changes reflect a broader shift away from traditional vanity metrics, such as likes and follower counts, towards focusing on meaningful engagement. Meta's initiatives align with previous actions, such as making like counts optional on Instagram, in response to user feedback.

The industry has seen a move toward valuing metrics like views and shares over likes, especially as algorithm-driven feeds reduce the need for users to follow specific accounts. This shift acknowledges that social media engagement is evolving, with a greater emphasis on meaningful interactions rather than superficial metrics. As platforms adapt, they are prioritizing features that enhance user comfort and engagement in the current digital landscape.

📲 Instagram will let creators test experimental reels on random people
#news #Insta

Instagram is introducing a feature that allows creators to test their reel ideas with new audiences before sharing them with their followers. These trial reels will initially be shown to non-followers, and creators will receive engagement data—such as views, likes, comments, and shares—about 24 hours after posting. This data will help creators decide whether to share the content with their followers.

The feature aims to encourage creators to experiment with new content styles without risking their established audience engagement. Instagram will provide insights on how trial reels perform compared to previous posts, and creators can either share successful trial reels with their followers or set the platform to automatically share them based on initial performance within 72 hours.

Instagram's announcement highlights that many creators feel hesitant to try new content for fear of it not resonating with their existing audience. The trial reels feature will be available to all eligible creators globally in the coming weeks, and it can be enabled through a “Trial” toggle before publishing. Trial reels will not appear on the creator's main grid or in followers' feeds.

📲 Meta’s Implements New Requirements for Financial Services Ads in Australia

📲 Meta plans to build a $10B subsea cable spanning the world, sources say
#news #Insta

🔹 Meta, the parent of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is the second-biggest driver of internet usage globally. Its properties — and their billions of users — account for 10% of all fixed and 22% of all mobile traffic. Meta’s investments into artificial intelligence stand to boost that usage even further. So to make sure it will have reliable infrastructure to support that business, Meta is taking the pipes into its own hands.

🔹 TechCrunch has confirmed with sources close to the company that Meta plans to build a new, major, fibre-optic subsea cable extending around the world — a 40,000+ kilometer project that could total more than $10 billion of investment. Critically, Meta will be the sole owner and user of this subsea cable — a first for the company and thus representing a milestone for its infrastructure efforts.

📲 Block, Mute, Restrict, Report – What’s the difference?
#tips #Insta

🔹 What it means to Restrict someone on Instagram - This feature allows you to discreetly restrict someone without alerting them. The restricted person won’t see when you’re online, and you won’t receive notifications for their comments. They also can’t tag or mention you or remix your content.

🔹 What it means to Mute someone on Instagram - If you want to control what you see on your Stories and Feed without cutting off someone entirely, Mute is your go-to option. This allows you to hide someone’s posts, stories, or messages while still following the account. You can mute an account in a variety of ways in order to limit your interactions with them

🔹 What it means to Block someone on Instagram - When you block someone, they can no longer search for your profile, view your content, or send you messages. When you block someone, it will block their account, other existing accounts, or any new accounts they may create. Note: There are multiple ways to block someone on Instagram. People aren’t notified when you block them. You can view a list of accounts you’ve blocked from your settings.

🔹 What it means to Report a profile or post on Instagram - You can report Accounts, Comments, Messages, Posts and more to Instagram. Our team works 24/7 to quickly review and remove content that goes against our Community Guidelines. Reporting on Instagram is always anonymous, so the person who posted the content will not know you reported it. This feature is ideal if you want to address serious issues and ensure your safety.

🚨Australian Government Votes to Ban Under 16s from Social Media Apps
#News #Insta

🔹 Despite conflicting evidence around the viability. and value of the plan, the Australian Government has now voted to implement a new law that will force all social media platforms to ban users under the age of 16. The controversial bill was passed late last night, on the final full sitting day of parliament for the year. The government was keen to get the bill through before the end-of-year break, and ahead of an upcoming election in the nation, which is expected to be called early in the new year.

🔹 The agreed amendments to the Online Safety Act will mean that:

🔹 Social media platforms will be restricted to users over the age of 16

🔹 Messaging apps, online games, and "services with the primary purpose of supporting the health and education of end-users" will be exempt from the new restrictions (as will YouTube)

🔹 Social media platforms will need to prove that they've taken "reasonable steps" to keep users under 16 off their platforms

🔹 Platforms will not be allowed to require that users to provide government-issued ID to prove their age

🔹 Penalties for breaches can reach a maximum of $AUD49.5 million ($US32.2 million) for major platforms
Parents or young people who breach the laws will not face penalty

🔹 The new laws will come into effect in 12 months' time, giving the platforms opportunity to enact new measures to meet these requirements, and ensure that they align with the updated regulations. The Australian Government has touted this as a "world-leading" policy approach designed to protect younger, vulnerable users from unsafe exposure online.

📲Instagram Launches ‘Collage’ Option for Stories
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram’s testing out another collage feature, with some users seeing a new prompt to post a collage of images from their camera roll to Stories, as another means to create more engaging Stories content. Instagram’s now rolling out a new Collage option for Stories, which then enables you to select multiple images from your camera roll to create a collage image. Which is not entirely new.

🔹 Instagram has enabled users to create different kinds of collages within Stories for some time, via its layout option, though that’s more rigid, in that the actual format of the collage is defined by the Layout you choose. This updated version is a bit more free form, which could enable you to create all new kinds of visual designs with your images.

🔹 Instagram’s been experimenting with collages for some time, with the platform also testing out collages within group chats. Which looks pretty much the same as this new Stories option, albeit in a different element. And really, Instagram’s probably been working on collages ever since late 2022, when Pinterest’s " Shuffles" app started gaining traction.

🔹 Shuffles enables you to create artistic collages from Pinterest images, and the app quickly generated interest with various audiences. As per Meta’s now familiar strategy, if any new social app function gains any traction, it copies it, in order to stem the potential flow of users away from its own apps.

📲 Instagram DMs add live location sharing and nicknames
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram is adding the ability to share your live location with friends in your DMs for up to one hour at a time so you can find each other when arriving at concerts, outings, and other gatherings. The feature works within Instagram's direct messages, which also gets a few other new features, including sticker packs and nicknames. Instagram says you can temporarily share your location privately with others through DMs, either one-to-one or within group chats, and the feature is off by default.

🔹 It's similar to the location-sharing features in Snapchat's SnapMap but without the overhead view that includes everyone who shares their location with you in one place. For now, the new features are only available in "select countries" (Instagram does not list where.) You can also now give yourself and your friends nicknames in your DMs, including within group chats. You can lock friends out of that ability if you don't like what they named you, and the feature only stays within specific chats - so outsiders can't see each other's provided nicknames.

🔹 DMs have 17 new sticker packs with over 300 new stickers, too, which you can drop into chats with your friends. You can even mark the stickers friends send you as favorites inside chats, re-use them, and make your own with the cutouts feature or generate them with AI. Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, said last week that people are using messages more than the create button, so the company is now testing a new placement for the chat icon that puts it on the bottom and center of the app.

📲 Gen Z Highly Influenced By User-Generated Content On Instagram
#News #Insta

🔹 Gen Z uses Instagram (69 per cent), YouTube (62 per cent), and TikTok (50 per cent) for product discovery, whereas Millennials choose Facebook (66 per cent), as per a recent survey by Bazaarvoice, Inc. Shoppers, including Gen Z across the globe, are increasingly relying on user-generated content (UGC) for product discovery and purchase decisions, and personalised offers are becoming key drivers of sales across multiple product categories. The study identifies a shift in customer behaviour, with omnichannel purchasing now combining webrooming, showrooming, and social media as important components. Eighty-eight per cent of shoppers want a consistent buying experience across all channels, with four out of five preferring a combination of in-store and online purchases.

🔹 Three-fourths of consumers engage in online-to-offline shopping, which involves researching things online before purchasing them in physical stores (webrooming), while 59 per cent do the opposite (showrooming). Over one-third (39 per cent) of consumers utilise social media for product discovery and research, with 31 per cent making direct purchases through these channels. In 2021, more than half of respondents (55 per cent) stated that they had never shopped on social media. This year, that figure has decreased to only 24 per cent. More than half of consumers, self-identified creators, are eager to share opinions when rating products. Last year, half (forty-six per cent) of respondents identified as passive consumers, who tend to read consumer opinions rather than sharing their own. This year, that number dropped to just 28 per cent.

🔹 This is good news for shoppers, 86 per cent of whom say they engage with creator content before making a buying decision, the report said. Sixty-five per cent of global shoppers rely on UGC, such as ratings, reviews, photos, and videos in their buying decisions. Nearly half of shoppers find user reviews on retailer websites the most influential content when researching the products online. Gen Z is highly influenced by UGC, with 80 per cent considering it crucial in their decision-making process. However, generation impacts what type of content they prefer.

🔹 Baby boomers rely more on traditional UGC-like ratings and reviews, while Gen Z prefers visual content like photos and videos from social media influencers.
Personalised offers drive 45 per cent of shoppers to complete purchases online. They resonate even more strongly with Gen Z, 61 per cent of which find these tailored offers impactful. Electronics (47 per cent), apparel (42 per cent), and health and beauty (39 per cent), are the product categories for which personalised offers are most influential.

🔹 “This year’s study reinforces that to succeed today, brands and retailers must meet their customers wherever they shop—especially on social platforms, where consumer engagement and comfort with purchasing are on the rise,” said Zarina Lam Stanford, chief marketing officer (CMO) at Bazaarvoice. “The demand for user-generated content is higher than ever, and it’s a powerful tool for creating genuine connections that influence purchase decisions. As consumers shift from passive observers to active content creators, brands have a unique opportunity to harness authentic voices and build trust across all touchpoints.”

📲 Instagram Makes It Easier To Remove Inactive Profiles From Your Audience
#News #Insta

🔹 This could be helpful. Instagram is now displaying how many inactive profiles are among your followers, so that you can remove them from your audience if you prefer. Now, when you tap through on your “Followers” listing from your IG profile, you’ll see a new category above the main list that shows “Deactivated accounts”, along with profiles that have been flagged for review, creator accounts, etc. Why remove these inactive accounts?

🔹 Well, they’re messing up your stats for one, as all of your average performance figures are divided by the total number of followers you have. So your engagement rates and reach data could be impacted, depending on how you measure them. They could also be messing up your ad targeting sets if you’re aiming to reach people similar to the audience that you have. It’s the same with asking family members to follow your brand account, at some stage, you may be better off removing them, because all of your insights into your audience’s interests could be impacted by having people outside your target audience included in this segment.

🔹 Inactive followers may well be the same, with accounts that are not active still being included in your datasets. But now, you can easily remove them, by simply going to this listing and tapping “Remove” on each account. Of course, you may also want to keep them, because maybe having a higher follower count is important to you.

🔹 But depending on how you’re looking to grow your profile, and reach the right audience in the app, having the capacity to remove inactive profiles could be a valuable addition to your process. The new option is now active in the latest version of Instagram.

📲 Meta Outlines its Efforts to Combat ‘Pig Butchering’ Scams
#News #Insta

🔹 Meta has provided some new insights into its ongoing efforts to protect users from scams while it’s also shared some tips on what to look out for to avoid scam activity, and in particular, “pig butchering”, which has become a bigger problem in recent years. What’s “pig butchering” you might ask?

🔹 As explained by Meta:
“One of the most egregious and sophisticated fraud scams, ‘pig butchering’ is all about building trusted personal relationships online with someone only to manipulate them to deposit more and more money into an investment scheme, often using cryptocurrency, and ultimately lose that money.”
So it’s (mostly) romance scams, in which the scammers target lonely people with offers of love and adventure, only to then clean out their bank accounts once they gain their trust. It’s pretty horrible, especially given that it targets vulnerable people, and eventually compounds their loneliness by screwing them over.

🔹 And as such, Meta’s taking action to stop it, with the company removing over two million accounts linked to scam centers, mostly originating from Asia, throughout this year. “For over two years, our teams have been focused on investigating and disrupting the activities of the criminal scam centers in Southeast Asia. While our initial focus was on scam centers in Cambodia, we have since worked to keep pace with the expansion of these groups as they began to appear in places like Laos, Myanmar and more recently the United Arab Emirates.

🔹 At the outset, we actively engaged with expert NGOs and law enforcement partners in the US and Southeast Asia to better understand the modus operandi of these criminal groups, including in places like Sihanoukville in Cambodia, which is reported to be a hotbed for Chinese organized crime-linked scams.” Meta says that it’s actively working with law enforcement to help catch out and punish these groups, while it’s also sharing information with industry peers to expand its detection systems. But users can also protect themselves by being aware of what to watch for, and on that front, Meta has provided seven tips.

🔹 These measures and notes will help you to protect yourself from scam activity, but the baseline security you need is two-factor authentication, while you should always be wary of any links that you click. Checking the details of email addresses, and clarifying URLs by hovering on links can be easy ways to detect errors or inconsistencies that point to scams, and being vigilant will help to ensure you don’t fall victim to them.

🚨 Meta Adds Video Calling Updates, Including HD Video Calls
#News #Insta

🔹 Meta’s announced some new updates for audio and video calling via Messenger and Facebook, just in time for your holiday catch-ups.
First off, Meta’s rolling out HD video calls, which will now be enabled by default for video calls made on WiFi.
As you can see in this example you’ll also have the option to switch on HD video calls using mobile data as well, providing improved video calling within its apps. The crispness of HD could significantly improve your video calling experience, enhancing connection within your video chats.

🔹 And this will also help: Meta’s also rolling out background noise suppression and voice isolation to help you make clearer, higher-quality calls. Meta’s also adding audio or video voice messages for when people don’t answer your call. When your hands are full or your phone is out of reach, you can now ask Siri to help you make your calls and messages wherever you are. Try something like: “Hey Siri, send a message to Cassandra on Messenger” and then dictate what that message will be.”

🔹 And Meta being Meta, it’s also obliged to include a generative AI element in any update. “In September, we announced new ways to personalize Messenger chat themes with unique, AI-generated images from Meta AI. Soon, you’ll be able to use AI backgrounds in Messenger video calls to reflect how you’re feeling or just add a little excitement to your call.” Yeah, I’m not a big fan of these AI-generated images, nor of Meta’s insistence in getting people to generate them in-stream. But this could provide a fun, custom option for your video calls, with generated images to accompany your video chats.

🔹 And a lot of people are using Meta’s video calling options to connect. Meta says that users spend over 7 billion cumulative minutes on calls across Facebook and Messenger every day. Which seems like a lot, but given the ease of connectivity, and the reach of Meta’s apps, it makes sense that people are making use of these options. These new updates, then, could be extremely valuable in helping to enhance connection over the holiday period.

🚨 Instagram will let you rebuild your recommendations from scratch
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram is testing a new feature that will let users completely refresh the content that’s recommended to them on the platform. The recommendations reset feature will “soon roll out globally,” according to Meta’s announcement, and can be used to clear the algorithmic content that currently appears in Feeds, Explore, and Reels. The new feature will be available to users of all ages, including Teen accounts.

🔹 “We want to make sure everyone on Instagram – especially teens – has safe, positive, age-appropriate experiences and feels the time they’re spending on Instagram is valuable,” Meta said. “We want to give teens new ways to shape their Instagram experience, so it can continue to reflect their passions and interests as they evolve.”

🔹 Recommendations can be cleared in “just a few taps,” according to Meta, and will “start to personalize again over time” based on the accounts and content the user goes on to interact with. Users will also be able to review which accounts they currently follow at the point of reset to decide if they want to unfollow them, helping to reshape the new recommendations that will develop.

🚨 Instagram’s Developing More DM Filter Options for Creators
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram is considering adding more filters to your DM requests, in order to make it easier for creators who receive a lot of messages to drill down to the most important outreach. Instagram recently added a range of new messaging filters for Creator Accounts, including the ability to filter your messages by specifying which types of accounts you want to see DM requests from.

🔹 And it's considering adding even more to this list, as you can see in this example, shared by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri: As you can see in this image, Instagram's looking to add more options to its DM request filters, while also making them more accessible in-stream. That would make it easier to check DM requests in each of these categories, while also filtering out random DMs and spammy outreach.

🔹 And with DMs becoming the primary interaction option across all social apps, it makes sense for Instagram to lean into DM activity, and ensure that it's helping creators to maximize their opportunities. Because Mosseri and Meta also know that they need creators to keep posting in order to keep IG relevant, while they'll also need those creators engaged within their apps to lead into the next stage, being the metaverse. Improving DM connection is another way to increase creator reliance on the platform, and these changes could be valuable in the broader scheme.

🔹 Mosseri further notes that many creators, in many regions have flagged this as a major problem, and he says that they re working on various options designed to simplify DM requests. So while this might not be an issue for all users, large creators are clearly unhappy with the set up, and again, it's those popular creators that are critically important for Instagram, and Meta more broadly. There's no planned roll-out for IG's expanded DM requests filters, but they look to be well in development.

🚨 Instagram’s Testing Simplified AI Profile Image Generation
feeds for your favorite topics
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram is experimenting with a new option that would make it easier to generate an Al version of your profile image, facilitating a more stylized, artistic depiction of yourself in-stream. As you can see in this image, shared by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is currently working on a new option that would enable you to generate an Al profile picture direct from your profile editing options, so you could quickly and easily tap into Meta's Al image generation tools to update your pic. Which would be new for IG, but isn't really new for social media users.

🔹 Instagram's sister app Facebook has also been experimenting with Al-generated profile images, while both TikTok and Snapchat have similar, in their respective "Dreams" and Al avatar creation options. So in some ways, this would be bringing Instagram into line with other social apps, in providing a simplified Al profile image generation option. But it also feels a little disingenuous, right? For years, social media users have complained about bots and bot profiles infecting the experience, and duping unsuspecting users with doctored images and made-up depictions of seemingly real people. For example, earlier this year, Meta removed a network of over 900 profiles that had used fake, Al-generated headshots to depict themselves as real people.

🔹 Yet, now, the platforms are actively encouraging this. And while I realize these more stylized versions of Al headshots are not the same thing, in that they're designed to enable more artistic, creative variations of your depiction, it's still not you. And with anonymity masking the activity of some of the worst actors on the web, and as noted, enabling scammers and misinformation peddlers to dupe people within social apps, surely enabling and encouraging the use of such tools is not really a benefit, on balance. At the same time, IG, like every other social app, is keen to incorporate Al elements, in order to ensure that it rides the latest tech trend, and keeps up with the competition in this respect.

🔹 It’s not obvious how generative Al tools are overly beneficial in a social media context, when considering the core use case of social apps, in connecting humans for "social" purposes. Al-generated images are not a real depiction of your lived experience, which is what social platforms have traditionally been used for. Sure, Al art is another element, and showcasing your Al creations is a separate element from an artistic standpoint. But the majority of regular users are not artists, and as such, these Al-generated depictions are just fakes, and it's odd to see social platforms looking to re-package these as a positive, and not just more false depictions in their apps.

📲 Threads is testing custom feeds for your favorite topics
#News #Insta

🔹 Threads is testing a way to create custom feeds for certain profiles or topics, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday. The upcoming feature should make it easier to keep tabs on different interests, such as your favorite sports team or even technology-related news. It sounds similar to the custom feeds feature Bluesky rolled out last year — but Threads' version seems a lot simpler.

🔹 To create a custom feed, just search and tap into a topic. From there, select the three-dot icon beside the search term and choose "create new feed." You can also add profiles to your custom feed by selecting the three-dot icon above someone's profile photo and tapping "add to feed." Threads will then let you choose which feed you'd like to add the profile to. Your custom feeds will then appear in the same main menu bar as your "For You" and "Following" tabs.

🔹 There still isn't a way to set these custom feeds or your "Following" feed as your default view, though. Bluesky's current feed creation process requires some technical skill, but third-party tools, like SkyFeed, make it easier. "Custom feeds will display a combination of posts from the profiles you've added and the search results for the selected topic," Threads spokesperson Alec Booker told The Verge. "These are displayed in reverse chronological order."

🔹 The test is rolling out to a small number of people globally, but Booker says Threads hopes to bring it to more users "soon." Both Bluesky and Threads are seeing growth as people seek out alternatives to X. While Bluesky recently crossed the 15 million user line, Threads head Adam Mosseri said the platform grew by 15 million in just one month.

📲 Meta must face FTC trial that could separate Instagram and WhatsApp
#News #Insta

🔹 Meta must face the Federal Trade Commission's antitrust lawsuit that accuses the company of dominating the social media industry through its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, a DC District Court Judge ruled on Wednesday. The FTC filed a lawsuit against Meta in 2020, alleging the company bought up rivals - Instagram and WhatsApp - in an attempt to stifle competition. Judge James Boasberg initially dismissed the FTC's lawsuit in 2021, but the agency filed an amended complaint, which he ultimately let proceed.

🔹 Meta once again asked the court to dismiss the FTC's case in April. Boasberg has now ruled largely in favor of the FTC, though he dismissed a claim that Meta acted anticompetitively by preventing developers from accessing its API unless they agreed not to compete with its apps. In a statement to The Verge, Meta spokesperson Christopher Sgro said the company is "confident" the trial will show its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp were "good" for consumers.

🔹 "More than 10 years after the FTC reviewed and cleared these deals, and despite the overwhelming evidence that our services compete with YouTube, TikTok, X, Apple's iMessage, and many others, the Commission is wrongly continuing to assert that no deal is ever truly final, and businesses can be punished for innovating."

🔹 Even though the FTC's antitrust lawsuit was filed while President-Elect President Donald Trump was in office, his upcoming administration is expected to take a more lax approach to mergers and acquisitions - and major companies are taking notice. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, along with other Big Tech leaders, has already started to cozy up to Trump, who's expected to replace FTC Chair Lina Khan.

📲 In Europe, Instagram Ads Are About to Get Less Personal
News #Insta

🔹 Meta Platforms plans to give European users of Instagram and Facebook the option of receiving what it says are less “personalized ads” a concession to regulators that risks hitting the company’s revenue in one of its largest markets.
The social-media company plans in coming days to begin prompting users in Europe with the choice of the new ad format, without paying a fee, according to people briefed on the plans.

🔹 The new ads option comes as frustration has built at Meta over the EU’s efforts to regulate tech companies. The company recently spearheaded an open letter saying that the bloc’s laws threatened to squelch the artificial-intelligence boom in the region.

🔹 A major source of tension has been whether and how Meta must ask users for consent to use the data it collects—not just for targeting ads but also for training AI. Meta delayed release of its AI chatbots in the EU after privacy regulators in the bloc had suggested the company may need to seek consent to train models based on adults’ public posts on Instagram and Facebook in Europe.

🔹 Meta said Tuesday that it is introducing less-personalized ads to comply with demands from EU regulators—and that the changes could harm small businesses. “If EU regulation makes digital advertising less efficient, the entire European business community suffers,” Meta said.

📲 Instagram stops the ‘rug pull’ that disappears videos while you’re watching them
#News #Insta

🔹 You know that thing where, just after you've opened Instagram and become invested in whatever video was already loaded, a new video pops in and seemingly yeets the old video into the void, never to be seen again? That's a thing of the past, according to Instagram boss Adam Mosseri, who says in an AMA from his Instagram Story yesterday that the app now waits for you to scroll to show you the new stuff.

🔹 That behavior - which Instagram apparently called "rug pull" internally - wasn't just some weird bug. Mosseri says the app did it "because we were trying to load new content, and it was taking a while, so we showed you something that was already downloaded in the meantime, and it is generally good for engagement." But that's "really annoying," he acknowledges,
"so we stopped doing it." Instagram has taken "a little bit of an engagement hit for this," Mosseri concludes, saying it's a much better experience for those of us using the app.

📲 Australia to ban TikTok, Instagram, and X for under 16s.
#News #Insta

🔹 Australia's government says it will introduce "world-leading" legislation to ban children under 16 from social media. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the proposed laws, to be tabled in parliament next week, were aimed at mitigating the "harm" social media was inflicting on Australian children. "This one is for the mums and dads... They, like me, are worried sick about the safety of our kids online. I want Australian families to know that the government has your back," he said. While many of the details are yet to be debated, the government said the ban would apply to young people already on social media. There will be no exemptions on the age limit for children who have consent from their parents.

🔹 The government says that the onus would be on social media platforms to show they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access.
Albanese said there would be no penalties for users, and that it would be up to Australia's online regulator - the eSafety Commissioner - to enforce the laws. The legislation would come into force 12 months after it passes and be subject to a review after it's in place. While most experts agree that social media platforms can harm the mental health of adolescents, many are split over the efficacy of trying to outlaw them all together. Some experts argue that bans only delay young people's exposure to apps such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, instead of teaching them how to navigate complex online spaces. Previous attempts at restricting access, including by the European Union, have largely failed or faced backlash from tech firms.

🔹 And questions remain over how implementation would work given there are tools which can circumvent age-verification requirements. One of Australia's largest advocacy groups for child rights has criticised the proposed ban as "too blunt an instrument". In an open letter sent to the government in October, signed by over 100 academics and 20 civil society organisations, the Australian Child Rights Taskforce called on Albanese to instead look at imposing "safety standards" on social media platforms. The group also pointed to UN advice that "national policies" designed to regulate online spaces "should be aimed at providing children with the opportunity to benefit from engaging with the digital environment and ensuring their safe access to it".

🔹 But other grassroots campaigners have lobbied Australia's government for the laws, saying bans are needed to protect children from harmful content, misinformation, bullying and other social pressures. A petition by the 36Months initiative, which has over 125,000 signatures, argues children are "not yet ready to navigate online social networks safely" until at least 16, and that currently "excessive social media use is rewiring young brains within a critical window of psychological development, causing an epidemic of mental illness". When asked whether there should be broader efforts to educate children about how to navigate the benefits and risks of being online, Albanese said that such an approach would be insufficient because it "assumes an equal power relationship". "I don't know about you, but I get things popping up on my system that I don't want to see. Let alone a vulnerable 14-year-old," he told reporters on Thursday. "These tech companies are incredibly powerful. These apps have algorithms that drive people towards certain behaviour."

📲 Meta’s Rolling Out More Variable Ad Display Options
#News #Insta

🔹 Meta's rolling out a new ad option called "Flexible Media", which is its next step in enabling variable ad delivery approaches based on its systematic predictions of user response. Okay, that was a bit of a jargonistic explainer. The more simple explanation is Meta's looking to maximize ad performance by having more creative options that it can then display to different users. On this front, Meta's already pushing advertisers to utilize its automated Advantage+ campaign tools, which effectively choose which of your ads to show different users.

🔹 It also has several ad options that can customize and personalize ad display, with Flexible Media playing another part in this. As you can see in this example, posted by Bram Van Der Hallen, "Flexible Media" is showing up as an option to some advertisers on some Meta Ads campaigns. As per the description: "We'll deliver the media you choose for placement groups across placements when it's likely to improve performance." To be clear, this is different from "Flexible Ads", which enable you to submit 10 images for an ad, with Meta's system then able to pick and choose which images to show to each user.

🔹 Flexible Media looks to be another variation on this, which would enable Meta's system to use different images for different placement groups. So, essentially, you'd be giving Meta's system permission to use different images for different ad types, as it sees fit. As noted, it's another step towards Meta fully automating ad campaigns, and displaying different ads to different users, relative to how its systems determine likely response. In other words, Meta's seeking to automate more and more elements of your ad process, so that eventually, you won't even need to come up with any element of your ad. You'll just enter a URL, and Meta will do the rest.

🔹 Which likely feels like you're giving over too much control to the system, but given that Meta's ad targeting process is based on its system Al, which measures and tracks ad responses, it makes sense that it would also be able to help you reach a more receptive audience. And you're likely restricting that by manually choosing your audience.
So while it may feel wrong, and like you're not utilizing your audience knowledge for ad targeting, it's likely worth experimenting with Meta's automated ad options, and seeing whether they drive better results. Flexible Media looks to be another part of this, giving Meta's systems more options on which ads and ad displays it can show to users.

📲 Instagram Now Has More Users Than Facebook in EU
#News #Insta

🔹 Last week, in addition to reporting its Q3 performance update, Meta also shared its latest EU user numbers for Facebook and Instagram as part of its Digital Services Act (DSA) obligations. And the numbers show that Instagram has now surpassed Facebook's active user count in the region. Instagram now has 269.1 million monthly active users in EU, versus 260.6 million for Facebook. In Meta's first EU user report, covering the period between April to September 2023, both platforms had the same user count, at 259 million MAU.

🔹 But now, IG has superseded the company's flagship app, with Facebook seeing much slower growth, and even slightly declining in usage over the most recent measurement period (April to September this year). Could that be a more common trend around the world, with Facebook potentially losing audience, as Instagram continues to add more users? Well, we don't know for sure, as Meta stopped reporting Facebook's monthly active user counts this year, in favor a combined audience measurement for its entire "Family of Apps" (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads). But based on the last time that it reported Facebook's monthly actives (Q4 2023), it does seem that this is more likely confined to EU, and potentially U.S. audiences.

🔹 Facebook's EU user count was in decline throughout 2023, and really, had been on a downward trend since 2022. Its U.S. user count had also been fairly stagnant, but Facebook usage was still growing in other markets. As such, it seems like this shift would be more confined to EU, and not reflective of broader trends. But even so, it is interesting to see IG potentially taking the mantle from Facebook as Meta's main app, even if only in selected markets. The other question then is: "Why is Facebook losing traction with European audiences?" Well, some of that can be attributed to the implementation of improved data privacy regulations in Europe, which have revealed more about the data that Facebook takes in, and can use in its various applications. That, some suggest, has seen more users turn away from the app, while other reports indicate that more EU users now find Facebook to be outdated versus other apps.

🔹 Whatever the reason, it is also important to note that Facebook remains hugely popular in the region, with 260 million active users. TikTok has 150 million EU monthly actives, while X has 66 million, so on balance, even with a slight decline, Facebook is still a key interactive platform for European users. It's just not as popular as IG now is, which likely suggests that Facebook isn't catching on with younger audiences as well as it used to.

📲 Instagram Adds DM Filters to Assist Creators
News #Insta

🔹 Instagram has added some new messaging filters for creators accounts, which will make it easier to sort through your message requests, and find the most relevant inquiries in your inbox. As you can see in these examples, creators will now be able to sort and filter their message requests via various qualifiers, including reordering them based on the sender's follower count, listing DMs from verified accounts only, from brand accounts only, from other creators, and more. There's also a new, dedicated "Story replies" folder, which will make it easier to scan through your actual messages, as opposed to Story replies.

🔹 That should make it easier for creators to manage their often cluttered inboxes, and get to relevant requests, especially brand collab queries. Which, evidently, is a major headache for big creators. As explained by IG chief Adam Mosseri: "When you go to the requests inbox, sometimes it can be really overwhelming, and I've heard this a lot from creators I've talked around the world. So what we've done is we've added ways to filter down those requests to just see the ones that you're looking for." So while regular users likely don't have a lot of trouble dealing with their DM traffic, this becomes a bigger problem for creators the larger their audience reach gets. Remember when T-Pain discovered that he had a heap of DM requests for collaborations that he didn't even realize were coming through IG?

🔹 I guess that's the type of challenge Instagram's looking to address with these new filters, making it easier for big creators to make sense of their DMs quickly, and ensure that they don't miss anything important coming in. And with DMs becoming the primary interaction option across all social apps (with feeds switching to entertainment-focused content), it makes sense for Instagram to lean into DM activity, and ensure that it's helping creators to maximize their opportunities.

🔹 Because Mosseri and Meta also know that they need creators to keep posting to keep IG relevant, while they'll also need those creators engaged in their apps to lead into the next stage, being the metaverse. Improving DM connection is another way to increase creator reliance on the platform, and these changes could be valuable in the broader scheme. Instagram also notes that it's "continuing to invest in improvements that will simplify DMs and make it easier for creators to navigate their messages." So there could be further DM improvements coming soon.

📲 Meta Posts Strong Revenue Result in Q3
News #Insta

🔹 Meta has shared its latest performance update, showing a small increase in active users across its apps, and a big increase in revenue, in relative terms. Though its investments in next-level projects remain significant. Here’s a look at the latest numbers from Mark Zuckerberg’s tech behemoth.
First off, on active users. Meta reports that it now has 3.29 billion people using its apps (Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads) every day, which is a small increase on the 3.27 billion it reported in Q2.

🔹 Though we’re talking about 3 billion plus people, the scale of which is difficult to truly comprehend. The population of the world is estimated to be around 8.1 billion, so Meta’s apps are used by almost 40% of the entire planet, every single day. Minus the 1.4 billion Chinese residents (where Meta is banned), and that’s closer to 50%, so the breadth of Meta’s operation in this sense is pretty amazing.

🔹 And it’s still growing. Despite its apps presumably reaching saturation point in many markets, Meta’s still seeing more users sign up to its apps, which bodes well for its ongoing potential, and its core ads business. Indeed, Meta’s also driving more revenue, on average, from those users. Meta doesn’t break down its ARPP results by market like it used to, but as you can see here, Meta’s overall revenue per user is rising, and will increase again amid the holiday rush in Q4. Which will help Meta continue to improve its revenue intake. Meta remains reliant on North America and Europe for the majority of its revenue intake, though it’s steadily increasing its Asia Pacific market intake as well.

🔹 That’s seen it post a strong revenue result for the period of $40.59 billion. So while Meta is spending a stupid amount on VR and now AI development, it continues to rake in the cash from its main cash cow, by showing people more ads in its apps. On that front, Meta also reported that ad impressions delivered across its apps have increased by 7% year-over-year. The average price per ad is also increasing (+11% YoY), though the math there is probably not ideal for social media marketers.

📲 Meta Is Developing a Search Engine to Power Its AI Chatbot
#News #Insta

🔹 Could Meta build its own search engine, and if it did, what would that look like? Reports have emerged that Meta is looking to build its own search tool for Meta Al, in order to reduce its reliance on Google and Microsoft's Bing for web searches within its Al chatbot. There are a couple of potential angles to the news, but it seems like Meta is looking to expand its data-gathering process in order to continue to build more powerful, real-time Al data tools. Which could result in a broader Meta search tool, powering real-time insights for its apps.

🔹 This is something that could have particular value for Threads, in providing up-to-the-minute notes on evolving news stories to complement engagement in the app. When Meta first announced its Meta AI chatbot in September last year, it explained how it would be using web search results from Bing to help expand its responses: "In text-based chats, Meta Al has access to realtime information through our search partnership with Bing and offers a tool for image generation." When Meta Al responses utilize Bing for information for context, Meta provides a web link to the search query. Then in April this year, Meta announced an additional partnership with Google to expand its web search responses even further, providing a similar web link on Google-powered replies.

🔹 And now, according The Information, Meta is looking to build its own web crawler to power search queries independently, in order to reduce its reliance on its search partners for Meta AI. As per The Information: "As Meta Platforms tries to keep up with OpenAl in developing artificial intelligence, the Facebook owner is working on a search engine that crawls the web to provide conversational answers about current events to people using its Meta Al chatbot." Conceptually, this would give Meta an alternative, in case Microsoft or Google, both of whom are competing with Meta on generative Al development, decided to end their search deals.

🔹 But that would also mean that Meta would need to build a complex search system, which crawls the web in a similar way to both Google and Bing. Which is a big undertaking, and why Meta went with these partnerships in the first place. But could Meta actually create a web crawler that functions in a similar way and would that be good enough to provide adequate answers in Meta's chatbot? Meta already has various web crawlers that gather information from external websites, and those crawlers have been ramping up activity in recent months, as Meta looks to gather more data for its Al projects.

🔹 They could also already be gathering data for this new search engine, but a dedicated Facebook search engine, again, would be a big project. Though a dedicated search engine is a logical move in the broader information gathering sense that would also give Meta more data for its AI language models moving forward. Maybe, that's actually the bigger picture here, as opposed to simply powering in-stream search. It's more likely that Meta's shoring up its data sources to power its Al tools and utilizing its existing crawlers to scrape whatever data it can from external providers who haven't updated their robots.txt protections. That would help Meta build upon its already vast data stores, and if it's already gathering that info, it makes sense to also reduce its reliance on external search providers where it can. So maybe it's likely less about building a competitor to these providers and more about making best use of its own data gathering processes. But even so, it's a significant undertaking, which could provide expanded opportunities for Zuck and Co., if they can get it right.
Really, though, it's not an unexpected move, given the competition in the space. Again, Meta is battling with these two providers for Al supremacy, and as the race continues to heat up, it'll come as no surprise if they stop helping Meta in this regard.

📲 Instagram Downgrades Video Quality for Less Viewed Clips
#News #Insta

🔹In his weekly Q and A on IG Stories last week, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri noted that the quality of video for Stories and Reels posts can be reduced or increased at different times based on the engagement that each video receives. In response to a question about some older Stories looking blurry, Mosseri explained that: "In general, we want to show the highest quality video we can when someone is watching a Story or Reel. But if something isn't watched for a long time, because the vast majority of views are in the beginning [after initial posting], we will move to a lower quality video, and then if it's watched again a lot, then we'll re-render the higher quality video."

🔹Mosseri also notes that if someone is accessing a video on a slow internet connection, the app will serve them a lower-quality video, so that it loads more quickly. Which makes sense, in terms of maximizing resources to deliver the best user experience to the majority of users (i.e. if something is being viewed by more people, it should be presented in the best quality). But still, that also means that less viewed content loses out, as the reduction in playback quality will likely inhibit engagement, and compound that initial lack of views even further over time. Which seems like an unintended side effect of the process, and something that could impact your content.

🔹After his explanation sparked further discussion (via social media commentator Lindsey Gamble), Mosseri further noted that: "It works at an aggregate level, not an individual viewer level. We bias to higher quality (more CPU intensive encoding and more expensive storage for bigger files) for creators who drive more views. It's not a binary threshold, but rather a sliding scale." Which again means that the system inherently benefits bigger creators, which is something that Mosseri has previously claimed that he's working to correct. Back in April, when explaining a change to Instagram's ranking algorithms which was designed to benefit smaller creators, Mosseri noted that: "Smaller creators historically haven't gotten their fair share of reach on Instagram, and we want to change that.

🔹 So we're making some changes to how we rank recommendations to give smaller creators a better chance of breaking through." Giving more popular creators better video quality seems to run counter to that aim, but then again, Instagram has to also consider the overall user experience. So is this the only way? In yet another response to his video quality explainer, Mosseri also said that: "In practice it doesn't seem to matter much, as the quality shift isn't huge, and whether or not people interact with videos is way more based on the content of the video than the quality.

🔹 Quality seems to be much more important to the original creator, who is more likely to delete the video if it looks poor, than to their viewers."
Yeah, I don't know, I don't think that I'd be as willing to share a video that's a bit blurry, as opposed to a higher-quality clip. But the only person with the data here is Mosseri, and he knows the impact that this has on engagement, for both bigger and smaller creators. So we have to take his word, that the impacts are minimal, though it may also be worth noting for your metrics, that older, less popular video clips could be displayed in lower quality. Which could impact engagement.

📲 Instagram saves the best video quality for the most popular content
#News #Insta

⚙️ Ever wondered why some of your Instagram videos tend to look blurry, while others are crisp and sharp? It's because, on Instagram, the quality of your video apparently depends on how many views it's getting. That's according to a video AMA from Instagram head Adam Mosseri, in which he explained why some videos are lower-quality than others.
Here's part of Mosseri's explanation, from the video, which was reposted by a Threads user today: In general, we want to show the highest-quality video we can ... But if something isn't watched for a long time — because the vast majority of views are in the beginning — we will move to a lower quality video. And then if it's watched again a lot then we'll re-render the higher quality video. He continues, adding that the platform does this in order to "show people the highest-quality content we can."

⚙️ Instagram devotes more resources to videos from "creators who drive more views," Mosseri wrote later in response to the Threads post containing the clip. The shift in quality "isn't huge," Mosseri said in response to another Threads user, who'd asked if that approach disadvantaged smaller creators. That's "the right concern," he told them, but said people interact with videos based on its content, not its quality.

⚙️ That's consistent with how Meta has described its approach before. In 2021, the company projected it wouldn't be able to keep up with the increasing number of videos uploaded to the platform. (Meta estimated last year that it served 4 billion video streams per day on Facebook.) Meta wrote in a blog that in order to conserve computing resources for the relatively few, most watched videos, it gives fresh uploads the fastest, most basic encoding.

⚙️ After a video "gets sufficiently high watch time"" it receives a more robust encoding pass. Once it gets popular enough, Meta applies its most advanced (read: slowest, most computationally costly) processing to the video. The result, of course, is that the most popular creators tend to have the best-looking videos.

📲 Meta signs its first big AI deal for news
#News #Insta

🔹 Meta's Al chatbot will soon begin citing Reuters reporting while answering news-related queries. The two companies have struck what Axios describes as a "multi-year deal" that will allow Meta to use Reuters content for its chatbot responses. The deal is the first of its kind for Meta, in an era of news outlets agreeing to provide their content to Al companies. "We're always iterating and working to improve our products, and through Meta's partnership with Reuters, Meta Al can respond to news-related questions with summaries and links to Reuters content," Meta spokesperson Jamie Radice said in an email.

🔹 "While most people use Meta Al for creative tasks, deep dives on new topics or how-to assistance, this partnership will help ensure a more useful experience for those seeking information on current events." "We can confirm that Reuters has partnered with tech providers to license our trusted, fact-based news content to power their Al platforms. The terms of these deals remain confidential," spokesperson Heather Carpenter told The Verge in an email. Axios reports that Reuters will be compensated for its content appearing in Meta's Al chatbot, which is accessible through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, and links to Reuters stories will begin appearing for US users on Friday. Many of Meta's splashiest Al features have so far been character focused - celebrity chatbots the company recently scrapped, for example — instead of centered around current events.

🔹 Radice didn't respond to questions about safety measures in place for Al responses that deal with news and current events. Over the last year or so, news organizations, including The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and the Dotdash Meredith group have signed licensing deals with OpenAl. (Disclosure: Vox Media, The Verge's parent company, has a technology and content deal with OpenAl.) "Al is coming, it is coming quickly. We want to be part of whatever transition happens," The Atlantic CEO Nicholas Thompson told The Verge.

🔹 "Transition might be bad, the transition might be good, but we believe the odds of it being good for journalism and the kind of work we do with The Atlantic are higher if we participate in it. So we took that approach." On the other end of the spectrum is The New York Times, which is engaged in an expensive legal battle against OpenAl and Microsoft, in which it claims the tech companies infringed on its copyright when they built their Al models. Meta leaning into news and current events within its Al chatbot is notable, considering its adversarial stance against such content on Threads. Executives have publicly said the company is "not going to do anything to encourage" hard news and political content, and though the Al chatbot is not integrated with the X competitor, it feels a bit like Meta wants it both ways - users can get their news from Meta platforms, but the company wants control over how they do so.

🔹 Though Meta now appears to be willing to pay for news content, it's also simultaneously fighting laws that would require compensating news publishers for their content on social media. If you live in Canada, for example, you can't access news on Facebook and Instagram because rather than pony up according to a new law, Meta opted to block all publisher accounts and links on the platforms. Google threatened similar action in California, where another "link tax" law was advancing — the bill ultimately died, and news outlets and Google reached a $250 million partnership agreement. Perhaps
unsurprisingly, part of that money is going to an Al program.

📲 Instagram Announces Halloween-Themed Activations
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram has announced some spooky features for Halloween, including keyword-triggered animations in DMs, Stories templates, a Halloween font, and more. First off, Instagram’s added some “secret” Halloween-themed keywords in DMs and Notes which will activate effects and animations.
As you can see in the first image here, using specific keywords in your DMs will trigger animations like bats flying across the screen.

🔹 A few of the “secret” keywords (don’t tell anyone) are “Halloween”, “Happy Hallowen”, and “Trick-or-treat”, while Halloween-themed emojis will also prompt these animations. The second image here shows the new Halloween chat theme for DMs and broadcast channels, another way to spookify your chats. Though you can also use Meta’s AI tools to generate any background of your choosing.

🔹 Instagram’s also adding 5 custom “Add Yours” templates to prompt Stories interaction for the event. With these, you’ll be able to prompt your Stories viewers to share Halloween-themed images, or answer themed questions, among other options. The new templates will be available in the “Happy Halloween” section of the new “Add Yours Templates” Discovery Surface in Stories. Instagram’s also adding a new “Halloween” font, as well as a text effect:

🔹 While Meta also notes that users can generate Halloween-themed images and content via Meta AI. If you want. Personally, I still struggle to understand why regular users would want to post AI-generated images to their social media profiles, as they’re not reflective of a personal experience or creation. But Meta’s very keen for people to use its latest AI tools. So there’s that. These are some fun activations, that will no doubt help users get into the Halloween spirit, while brands can also make use of these fonts and features to dress up their Halloween posts and communications.
The new Halloween features will be available from today.

📲 How to switch your Instagram account from public to private
#News #Insta

🔹 Anyone who has followed a social network knows that sometimes the most innocuous post can attract unpleasant responses, especially on apps like Instagram, where your content — whether video, image, or text — can be out there for anyone to see. There are any number of reasons you might want to set your account to private, even if only temporarily. It would make it so that only people you approve can follow you and see the stuff you post on your grid or in your Stories.
This isn’t a perfect solution. For example, although only your followers can see your posts while your account is private, some aspects of your account, such as your profile, will remain public.

Anyway, let’s begin.

🔹 To toggle your Instagram Private Account on:

🔺 Using the iOS or Android mobile app, tap on your profile icon in the lower-right corner and select the three-line hamburger icon in the top right. Using the web app, look for the hamburger icon at the bottom left.

🔺 On Android, scroll down and select Account privacy. On iOS, select Settings > Account privacy. On the web app, you’ll find Account privacy in the Settingscolumn on the left.

🔺 Toggle Private Account on.

🔹 If you want to pare down your followers, you can do that as well.

🔺 Go to your profile by selecting your personal icon.

🔺 Select the word “followers” to the right of your profile picture.

🔺 Tap or click the Remove button next to any followers you want to drop. You’ll be asked to confirm the removal and told that those followers will not be informed of their removal.

🔹 In your settings, you can also click the link to the Accounts Center if you want to deal with issues with other Meta apps as well, such as Facebook and Threads, or add other security features such as two-factor authentication.

📲 Celebrity jet-tracking accounts have vanished from Threads and Instagram
#News #Insta

🔹 Meta has suspended several Threads and Instagram accounts that track the private jets of celebrities such as Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Kim Kardashian, and former US president Donald Trump. Jack Sweeney, who gained notoriety for his ElonJet account on X and maintained many of the suspended accounts, said on Threads that the development is "reminiscent of all my accounts getting suspended on Twitter."

🔹 The shuttered accounts, which used publicly available data to show the flight paths of private jets, initially displayed a message on Monday that read, "The link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed." Meta provided no direct warning or explanation for the suspensions, according to Sweeney, who says the accounts appear "blacked out with no options to interact or receive information."

🔹 In a statement to TechCrunch, however, an unnamed Meta spokesperson said "Given the risk of physical harm to individuals, and in keeping with the independent Oversight Board's recommendation, we've disabled these accounts for violating our privacy policy." An account tracking Taylor Swift's private jet was also deactivated earlier after the singer threatened to take legal action against Sweeney in February unless he ceased "stalking and harassing behavior."

🔹 Sweeney said that at least 38 of his accounts have been suspended across platforms like X and Threads, noting that "today feels like December 15th 2022" - the date on which the original ElonJet Twitter account was permanently suspended.

📲 Why are Instagram searches for ‘Adam Driver Megalopolis’ blocked for CSAM?
#News #Insta

🔹 When people search for "Adam driver Megalopolis" on Instagram or Facebook right now, instead of seeing posts about Francis Ford Coppola's latest film, they're shown a warning, titled, "Child sexual abuse is illegal." That bizarre fact was pointed out in a post on X yesterday, and as of today, I'm still seeing it when I search for the phrase.

🔹 But why? Well, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with recent Threads moderation failures. Nor are there bombshell revelations about Megalopolis or its main star that I'm aware of.

🔹 Instead, Facebook and Instagram seem to be blocking searches containing "mega" and "drive" — I saw it when I searched with those two words together, but not when I searched for "Megalopolis," "Adam Driver," or either term mixed with any others. The issue isn't new, either, as this nine-month-old Reddit post about searching for "Sega mega drive" on Facebook illustrates. (That search seems to work as expected, now.)

📲 Meta Announces a New Round of Job Cuts
#News #Insta

▶️ Despite the company's strong financial performance, Meta's undertaking another round of job cuts, impacting various roles and teams within the group. The changes appear to be spread across various teams, rather than targeting one specific aspect, with Meta trimming down its labor outlay across the board. Around 100 roles, in total, are being made redundant. Among those impacted is reverse engineering legend Jane Manchun Wong, who's been a key source of info for SMT over the years.

▶️ Wong has only worked at Meta for a relatively short time, primarily focused on Threads. Meta has provided a brief statement on the latest staff cuts, explaining that: "Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy. This includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles. In situations like this when a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees." So, ideally, the impacted staff will be reallocated, but the latest cuts show that Meta is focused on
maximizing efficiency, and reducing cumulative bloat that has been an issue in the past.

▶️ Last year, Meta culled around 20,000 roles, as part of its "Year of Efficiency" push, with the justification being that Meta has become too bloated, particularly in the wake of the COVID downturn, and therefore needed to refocus and realign itself with modern market requirements. The change also came after Elon Musk's massive staff cuts at Twitter (now X), which many had speculated would lead to broader staff reductions in the tech sector. Yet, at the same time, Meta's financial performance has remained strong throughout. Meta generated $134 billion in revenue in 2023, a 16% increase year-over-year, and it's on track to see similar increases again in 2024.

▶️ So in terms of business strength, Meta remains steady, though constant re-assessment and rationalization of costs is also a part of this. The latest cuts don't seem indicative of broader concerns with the company, and again, are not focused on any specific area. But they do show that Meta is becoming more focused on its bottom line performance, and ensuring that its costs don't get out of hand.

📲 Instagram adds new guardrails to protect teens against sextortion
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram is launching several new features designed to protect teens from sextortion scams, which occur when scammers threaten to share intimate images of victims unless they receive a payment or more photos. One guardrail that’s rolling out soon will prevent people from screenshotting or screen recording disappearing images or videos sent in a private message. If the sender enables replays of the image or video, Instagram will block people from opening them on the web.

🔹 This won’t stop scammers from capturing the image or video by recording it with another device, however. Starting today, Instagram will begin using certain indicators, like how new an account is, to detect scammy behavior as well. The platform will then prevent these accounts from sending follow requests to teens by blocking their request or moving it to the teen’s spam folder. It’s also testing a safety notice in Instagram and Messenger that will alert teens if the person they’re talking to is located in a different country, as sextortion scammers often lie about their location.

🔹 In addition, Instagram will now start blocking suspicious accounts from viewing the following or followers lists of their victims, which sextortion scammers can use for blackmail. Instagram will similarly prevent suspect accounts from seeing the lists of accounts that have liked a target’s posts, the photos they’re tagged in, and other users tagged in their photos. To protect kids from viewing obscene photos, Instagram is launching a feature that will automatically detect and blur nude images for users under 18. Instagram started testing this filter in April, and it will be enabled for teens globally by default. Other safety measures coming to the platform include an option to chat with the Crisis Text Line in the US if users report sextortion or child safety issues.

🔹 It will also show an educational video to teens in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia to spread awareness about sextortion scams, which are on the rise. The FBl reported at least a 20 percent increase in sextortion scams from October 2022 to March 2023. As part of its efforts to crack down on the practice, Meta removed
800 Facebook groups and 820 accounts associated with the Yahoo Boys - a Nigerian cybercriminal group that carries out these schemes. It also took down 63,000 Nigeria-based Instagram accounts in July.

🔹 Other platforms, like Snapchat, have taken steps to combat the scam by warning teens if they receive a message from an account that other users have blocked or reported. This suite of features comes as part of Meta's broader efforts to make its platforms safer for kids. Last month, Instagram announced that it would start putting all teens into more private accounts with certain safety settings enabled by default, like restricted DMs and Sleep Mode to silence notifications at nighttime.

📲 Instagram’s ‘social library’ could keep track of that funny video someone sent you
#News #Insta

⚪️ Instagram appears to be working on a new “Social Library” section in the app where you can easily access things shared in chat threads, your collections, and posts you’ve liked, according to an image shared by developer and leaker Alessandro Paluzzi.

⚪️ Judging from the looks of the screenshot from Paluzzi, the section will contain posts, Reels, and other media you’ve shared or received in chat threads as well as content you’ve liked or saved. A magnifying glass in the corner of the screenshot suggests this content will be searchable, too, which could make it a lot easier to quickly find a Reel or post you’re looking for.

⚪️ It’s not clear when Meta might launch this feature to the public. The company didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment. Paluzzi also recently spotted that Instagram might let you share your Instagram comments as posts on Threads.

📲 Instagram’s new profile cards make it more fun to share your account
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram will now let you share your account using a digital profile card. The two-sided “card” displays a QR code with your Instagram handle, along with other information visible on your profile, including your picture and bio.

🔹 You can add some extra flavor to your profile card by adding your own links and a song of your choice. As shown in the image below, you can also change the background image of your profile card (which sort of makes it look like a digital business card for your Instagram account).

🔹 Aside from offering an easier way to share your account, the new profile card seems like a handy way to give someone an all-in-one look at your interests. Creators can also use profile cards to provide businesses or other collaborators with relevant links to their contact information.

🔹 You can view your profile card by heading to your Instagram profile and selecting “Share Profile.” From there, select the pencil icon in the top-right corner of the screen to edit the elements of your profile card. You can then use the options at the bottom of the screen to share your profile with friends or download it to post on other platforms. There’s also an “Add to Story” option that will create a rotating two-sided card you can customize.

📲 Instagram and TikTok Remain the Most Popular Social Apps Among Teens
#News #Insta

🔹 Instagram remains the most used social app among teens, though TikTok is more popular as an entertainment source. That's according to the latest research conducted by Piper Sandler, which looks at teen trends of note, and how they're shifting over time. Based on an annual survey of more than 13,000 U.S. teens, Piper Sandler found that Netflix ranks slightly higher than YouTube in daily video consumption, while TikTok beat out IG as the most liked social app.

🔹 Yet, in terms of usage, Instagram is still number one, gaining some 7 percentage points since the last survey. TikTok came in second (+5%) followed by Snapchat (-3%). Which is no surprise. Younger audiences have always gravitated towards these apps, though as you can see, Snapchat has lost some ground in the latest Piper Sandler survey. In terms of other social platforms, Pinterest is generating more interest than in the past (+6%), while Facebook has also seen a slight resurgence (+2%).

🔹 The platform formerly known as Twitter, meanwhile, declined in usage by the same amount among teens (-2%). The fact that Instagram remains popular could relate to user social graphs, and established networks in the app, while Meta's shift towards Al-recommended content, which not everyone is a fan of, has also increased time spent in the app. Indeed, just last week, Meta reported that there are now 40 million young adults using Facebook across the US and Canada every day, the highest level in more than three years.

🔹 In terms of strategic planning, these insights probably don't change your targeting, as these were likely the platforms you were looking at already if you were trying to reach younger users. But maybe Pinterest is worth a look, while Facebook's improving AI ads could also provide a stronger pathway to younger audiences than you may expect. But still, it’s IG and TikTok that lead the way, while Snap maintains its relevance and influence over this cohort.

📲 Instagram Does Not Hold Artificial Intelligence Responsible for the Problems Encountered
#News #Insta

📲 Adam Mosseri acknowledges ‘mistakes’ in Threads’ broken moderation
#News #Insta

🔹 Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri is acknowledging recent mistakes in Meta's moderation processes on Threads and Instagram. For example, Meta unexpectedly deleted my account this week because it thought I was underage, the company locked my colleague's account because she joked about dying in a heatwave, and others have seen their posts disappear with no clear reason why. "Threads Moderation Failures" has been trending this week - putting more pressure on Meta's moderation processes.

🔹 Now Mosseri admits that Meta is having problems with those processes and has publicly posted that acknowledgment on Threads. He explains there's a "tool" that broke, which apparently did not show human reviewers "sufficient context" before they made posts and accounts disappear. You might think Meta is using Al to make decisions on what to delete and who to ban, but Mosseri's suggesting that's still done by humans and that the algorithm is just flagging posts for possible enforcement actions.

🔹 Meta is already fixing some of the mistakes it found, according to Mosseri, helping reviewers make better calls in the future. "We need to do better," Mosseri wrote. Things already seem better for me, personally: Meta quietly reinstated my account yesterday. But Meta didn't answer the questions about why users' posts and accounts were being deleted. The whole appeal process was grueling and mentally exhausting.

📲 Instagram Reels Can Now Be Shared on Threads
#News #Insta

🔹 A new feature related to Instagram has arrived to Threads, which failed to maintain its user base in the early days. Meta is testing a new feature that allows Instagram Reels to be shared directly in Threads. Although Threads appeared to be a serious competitor to X when it was first launched, it lost a large portion of its user base. Now, Meta, the company behind it, is trying to benefit from the large user base of its other social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram.

🔹 Meta, which aimed to deliver Threads posts to larger audiences by experimenting with cross-sharing in the past, is now which allows users to publish their Instagram Reels directly to Threads. Working on a new feature. Alessandro Paluzzi, who first noticed this new feature, said that there is a section to select Instagram Reels content on the post creation screen of Threads.

🔹 According to Paluzzi’s statement, when users tap the Instagram icon in the Threads application, they encounter a grid containing their posts and Reels on Instagram. From here, the desired content can be selected and shared on Threads. Many users were already aiming to gain more interaction and followers by sharing their Instagram content on Threads. This new feature makes this process even easier and aims to improve user experience.

📲 Instagram and Threads moderation is out of control
#News #Insta

🔹 On Threads, the trending topic of "Threads Moderation Failures" has sparked significant user discontent, with many reporting that their accounts are being deleted or restricted for sharing articles on controversial topics. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and Threads, has acknowledged these complaints and stated he is "looking into it." Users have expressed frustration, including one individual who had their account deleted for allegedly being underage, despite being an adult. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges of moderation on social media, with reports indicating that Meta is enforcing its rules with increasing strictness.

🔹 Moderation issues extend beyond individual accounts, as users like Jorge Caballero have noted that the automated system is erroneously applying fact checks to political content and throttling posts with accurate information about significant events, like hurricanes. Some users have even dubbed their experiences “crackergate,” where posts mentioning seemingly innocuous terms, like "saltines," have been swiftly removed. Social media consultant Matt Navarra also received a notification that his Threads account was being downranked after posting about a Meta AI hoax, and he, too, has drawn attention to these moderation inconsistencies.

🔹 The impact of these moderation practices is not limited to Threads; it extends to Instagram as well. A user reported that their Instagram account was disabled due to an alleged violation of age requirements, despite providing a state ID for verification. Meta's response indicated a strict adherence to its policies, resulting in the loss of years of posts and connections. Although Meta has instituted measures to protect underage users—requiring birthday information since 2021—the effectiveness and fairness of these age-related bans remain questionable.

🔹 Overall, the moderation practices employed by Meta are causing frustration and limiting the utility of its platforms. Users like Wario64 have experienced their posts flagged as spam, prompting them to reconsider their engagement with Threads. The growing trend of account restrictions and deletions may discourage users from sharing content, ultimately diminishing the social media experience and raising concerns about how these platforms manage community interaction and information sharing.

📲 Meta Announces Image Animation and Video Expansion Tools at Advertising Week
#News #Insta

🔹 At Advertising Week, Meta unveiled a series of new advertising updates, including AI-driven video animation tools and enhanced collaboration features for creators. One of the standout offerings is "Image Animation," which allows advertisers to animate static images using text prompts. This innovation enables users to generate engaging video content from single images without needing existing video assets, thus enhancing the promotional lifespan of ads. Initial feedback from advertisers has been positive, indicating that this tool can help overcome resource limitations and encourage more dynamic advertising strategies.

🔹 In addition to Image Animation, Meta is expanding its AI-based "Video Expansion" capabilities, which allow advertisers to transform their video assets into various formats through predictive technology. This feature has been in development for over a year and will soon be more accessible to brands, enabling them to utilize full video creation capabilities effectively. Furthermore, Meta is enhancing its Collections ads, allowing brands to incorporate creator content as "hero" assets, which can strengthen audience engagement by leveraging the authenticity of influencer partnerships.

🔹 Meta is also testing new options for adding creator testimonials to partnership ads and consolidating all partnership advertising tools into a single interface known as the "Partnership Ads Hub." This centralized platform will simplify the management of promotional collaborations, ensuring advertisers can easily track campaign details. Additionally, the upcoming video tab, part of Meta’s app refresh, aims to provide advertisers with more opportunities to reach users through various ad formats, similar to TikTok's model, which could enhance ad relevance and exposure.

🔹 With video content accounting for 60% of user engagement on Facebook and Instagram, Meta's focus on video at Advertising Week is strategically aligned with user behavior. The introduction of AI tools to facilitate animated content creation presents new opportunities for brands to engage with their audiences, even when traditional filming is not feasible. While the technology may not always yield perfect results, these updates position advertisers to capitalize on the growing trend of video consumption within Meta's platforms.

📲 Meta Shares New Reels Ad Tips
#News #Insta

🔹 Meta's released a heap of ad tips ahead of the holiday push, which explore its evolving Advantage+ campaigns, Reels ads, working with creators, Al creative, and more.
Meta's published a new range of guides and tips as part of its Agency Partners Summit, which it held last week.

🔹 It's now made all of the sessions and guides available online, and there's a heap to get through, including this helpful guide on Reels ads. Meta's 19-page Reels ads guide covers off on all the key considerations, and includes practical tips for maximizing Reels ad performance. First off, the guide looks at Reels usage and engagement, underlining why it should be an ad consideration.

🔹 Half of all time spent on IG is now spent watching Reels, which suggests that if you want to maximize your promotional impact, you should probably be there too. The guide also includes some of the usual Reels tips, which are fairly generic. Like, no doubt these tips are correct, but saying "make it entertaining" is much easier said than done. But the guide does also include some more practical notes.

🔹 There are also tips for Reels ad production, and how to incorporate Reels into your creative pipeline. As well as guides on how exactly to activate Reels ads in your campaign setup. It's a handy overview, with a range of practical notes to help improve your Reels ads approach.
