A New Chapter in the Life of HSE University 📖

On January 25, on the Day of Russian Studenthood, the historic building of the Rope Shop — the educational building of HSE University — Saint Petersburg on Vasilievsky Island will open its doors.

The opening will take place in the format of a large-scale cultural and educational marathon. Participants can look forward to public speeches, lectures, master classes, excursion, interactive zones — over 30 activities for every taste.

Speakers will include representatives from partner companies: VK, t2, Gazprom Neft, Yandex, RBK Petersburg, Lesta Games, and others, as well as leaders and faculty of HSE University. A special guest will be musician and TV presenter Alexander Pushnoi 🎸

We invite students, faculty, and staff of HSE University to attend the opening of the new educational space.

Be aware that during festive days additional security measures will be taken in all regions of Russia. In particular, police has intensified the personal identity check of foreign citizens.

📌 We ask you to always have with you:
🔹 passport,
🔹 valid migration registration,
🔹 migration card,
🔹 student ID,
🔹 medical certificates and a document confirming the fingerprinting (green card).

Make sure you have copies of all these documents in your phone as well!

As a rule meeting with police officers consists of verification of documents and asking clarifying questions.
Please treat document check with understanding.

As of 1 January 2025, the new regulation of SIM card circulation
provides for the specifics of selling SIM cards to foreign citizens and stateless persons

For registration / reissuance of SIM cards from 01.01.2025 prepare the necessary documents and data
✅ E-mail
✅ Identity document
- For a foreigner: passport of a foreign citizen
- For a stateless person: temporary residence permit / residence permit / refugee certificate / certificate of temporary asylum on the territory of the Russian Federation
✅ Notarised translation of the passport of a foreign citizen
To obtain it, apply to:
- to a notary - have the document translated by a translator recommended by the notary and have it certified
- to a translation agency
✅ SNILS
✅ Confirmed account on Gosusluga (State Services)
✅ Confirmed biometrics
✅ IMEI - number of your device
✅ Check the number of active SIM cards

Sign a contract with your service provider
To issue a new SIM card or re-issue an old one, go to the office of your mobile operator:
- with your passport and its notarised translation into Russian or a document proving the identity of a stateless person
- SNILS
- confirmed account on Gosusluga (State Services)
- confirmed biometrics
- e-mail address to which you have access
- IMEI of the device in which you plan to use the SIM card
Study and sign the drawn up agreement. Activate the SIM card at the operator's office or by yourself on Gosuslugi.

The International cinema discussion club aims to create a platform for discussing films from around the world, exchanging opinions and expanding the film education of the club's members through live interaction, analysis and critical perception of a wide range of world cinematic works. Discussion meetings will be held in Russian and English. International students will be able to take part in the discussion of the films they have watched, as well as suggest options from the cinema of their country.

Russian cuisine workshop 🇷🇺🥟🥔

Yesterday, under the guidance of a chef cook, participants prepared ‘vareniki’ with potatoes, ‘vinaigrette’ salad and ‘pirozhki’ with meat and apples. For many, this workshop was not only about food, but more about atmosphere, pleasant dialogue and new bonds.

Representatives of absolutely diverse culinary traditions united at the‘Russian table. There was a lot of laughter, cozy conversations and mutual help in the cooking process. After cooking at the big ‘family’ table, we had a tasting of all the dishes that each participant had prepared diligently and lovingly.

And here is a small checklist of words that our students learned:

Last Saturday, more than 80 students from HSE and other Saint Petersburg Universities gathered to celebrate the culture of Pakistan and the local Pakistani community 🇵🇰

For many participants, it was not just a meeting of compatriots, but also the acquisition of significant connections. During the event, all guests could watch and enjoy various performances, such as stand-up on what it's like to be an international student in Russia, poetry, numerous national performances and dances. All the events were held in different national languages (Punjabi, Sindhi, Urdu). Most of the participants were dressed in traditional clothes. The event ended with a chicken biryani tasting, where guests could chat in a more informal setting.

This past Sunday, we ventured out to the suburban city of Strelna for a visit to the Konstantinovsky Palace 🏛

It was founded in 1720 by Peter the Great, who sought to create a residence capable of eclipsing Versailles. During the XVIII and early XIX centuries, the palace was used as a country residence of the imperial family. After the 1917 revolution, the building lost its original function and was used for various needs, including a school and a sanatorium, and then was destroyed during the Great Patriotic War.

In the early 2000s, the palace was restored and since 2003 has been functioning as a Congress Palace, hosting international summits and cultural events 🇷🇺🌍

Last week our international freshmen went on a bus tour to see remarkable the centre of St. Petersburg! 🚍🌆

Our route included such famous landmarks as the Bronze Horseman, the Winter Palace and the Palace Square, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, and the Kazan Cathedral 📸

The tour was a great opportunity to learn about the culture of the city and make new acquaintances. We hope that the day was unforgettable and inspiring for all participants! ❤️
