We will be saying goodbye to our home of 16 years at the end of February 2025. To mark this momentous transition, we are rallying 700 people to form a 700m human chain to move things over on 22nd February 2025 (Saturday)—the final Saturday at GUI’s current home.

This symbolic act of community and connection will be a powerful way to give closure to this beloved space while bringing cherished items to GUI’s new home. Be part of this meaningful milestone.

What a year it has been at kampung and it was also the first year we celebrated Chinese New Year together outside of GUI. It was a small group owing to restrictions to the number of persons allowed but still nonethless a heartfelt time together. Thank you so much Rajan for sponsoring the venue! We have been working hard to bring down the cost of our new home. We’re incredibly grateful to our main contractor, Leads Engineering, for agreeing to a flexible contract that allows us to engage subcontractors offering more cost-effective solutions.

One such partner is KKL, who has generously provided a discount for offloading the earth. Thank you Yong Zhi! Before this, we worked closely with our landscape architect Bronwyn, and Mel to maximize the use of on-site earth through an effective cut-and-fill strategy, leading to the beautiful design of the amphitheater.

We’re thankful for the many people chipping in with their expertise and resources, helping us in their own special ways. We’re building a home powered by the community. ❤️🏡

Ana has been an incredible part of GUI’s journey, supporting our farm tirelessly during the COVID-19 period and bringing her vibrant energy to her enzyme workshops for our school learning journeys. She has since went on to open her own food forest greenhouse.

Unfortunately, the food forest greenhouse is at risk of shutting down. But with $725 SGD, she will be able to run it for one more month, giving enough time for a harvest celebration, seed sharing, and distribution of cuttings. The following are some details;

Right after CNY, we’re right into the thick of #GUIsBigMove. Demolition of the Heartquarters has begun, starting with the removal of the aircon units. These aircon units will be cleaned, packed, and brought to our new home for reuse.

These units were generously donated by Mitsubishi Electric Asia Pte Ltd, and we are incredibly grateful to have worked with Gwen and her team. This connection was made by the Singapore Green Building Council. Thank you MEAP & SGBC! 🙏🏻

We’re also deeply thankful to Jin Shun Engineering under the guidance of Mr. Yeo, who introduced us to Bottle Tree Park 16 years ago. For 16 years, Jin Shun has been helping us with light, fan, aircon, and pump installations, repairs, and maintenance. And once again, they are supporting us by moving and reinstalling these aircon units at the new space.

人日 which is also the day humans came to be, is celebrated on the seventh day of the Chinese New Year and is regarded as everyone’s common “birthday”. 🧧 🧧 Confucius believed that becoming human or 人, calls for a harmony of the two dimensions of self and others, and that individuals realize their humanity in community.

Here at GUI, we are grateful that we get to engage actively in community as we learn how to build up harmonious relationships through serving together and doing our part to support environmental sustainability. As we look forward with hope to the new season ahead, we would like to wish everyone, a harmonious relationship ahead with family and friends this new year!

Our volunteers came back to help us collect more farm soil, make a new compost pile and planter bed panels, house keep our gathering space and even propagate more plants with Camphora. It was also a wonderful time to reconnect with one another and the land! Grateful for the many hands and heartiest conversations as we work towards our Big Mov.🪴

One of our favorite parts of celebrating Chinese New Year🧧 has to be the eve of the new year where we have reunion dinner, also known as tuan yuan fan (团圆饭) with our families.🍜 It symbolizes the reuniting and coming together of family as we look forward to the new year with hope.🙏 Here at GUI, its also always a special time whenever we get to welcome back our GUI family and the people we miss over the years to kampung.

Two weekends ago, our Touchwood team were honored to be part of the Chong Pang Edusave Awards 2025 where they held a "Creative Hangar" workshop. The participants got to personalize their own hangars with upcycled wood, dried fruits and seeds! It was such a pleasure to watch families bond together during the awards ceremony.

Congratulations once again to students receiving their edusave awards! Our Touchwood team will be back again on 25th Jan this week.

We are so grateful to share another beautiful video by Luin: "Life, Death and a Singaporean Farm Kid". It tells the story of how a 12 year old farm volunteer, Anneli, takes on lessons of life, death and loss in her stride and proves wise beyond her years.🦆 This video also deeply captures the sense of hope through the eyes of a child and leaves viewers comforted despite not knowing what lies ahead for our community. Thank you so much again Luin for touching all our hearts and also for capturing the caring community we have here at GUI.🙏

Happy Monday! Leading up to our Big Move, our volunteers have been busy setting up a new structure for us to temporarily run workshops from at our playground building site at Nee Soon East. Our playground building team helped set up the platform a weekend ago and our staff added on an extra structure to include a pantry area. It was heartening to be able to complete the work together despite the unpredictable wet weather. Grateful that we are working together to embrace the changes ahead.

Our journey under the Biodiversity Pillar, beautifully captured by Luin and supported by the SG Eco Fund and MSE, highlights the heart of what we do—bringing people closer to nature.

Led by our talented Landscape Architect Bronwyn and her dedicated team from Camphora led by Shurin, the community has been hard at work transplanting plants from our current home to get ready for our new space. This hands-on experience is not just about moving greenery; it’s about fostering a deeper connection with the environment and nurturing our shared natural spaces.

As we prepare to return the land by the end of February 2025, the window to be part of this meaningful effort is closing soon. We need many hands on deck to complete this monumental task.

Over the past year, this amazing community known as Lorong Chencharu Bicycle Co-op (LCBC) has come together to repair broken bicycles, which were then gifted to migrant workers through Its Raining Raincoats.

From fixing rusty chains to sharing valuable repair tips, LCBC has been tirelessly imparting knowledge and skills, fostering a culture of giving, learning, and sustainability.

As GUI closes to prepare for her transition to her new home, LCBC will be be resuming at a temporary space. Stay tuned for updates. Thank you, LCBC, for being a shining example of community, care, and sustainability.

Happy Mid week! Do you know GUI has been collecting plastic waste to create roads for our new space?

We are grateful to be working with Magorium to convert these plastic wastes. Every 1sqm of our new road will use 7kg of plastic waste and we need about 7ton of it.

We are grateful to the schools who have helped to collect these plastic waste and our volunteers who help to sort and compress them before Magorium collects them for processing. Thank you!

We had the pleasure recently to work with a corporate company to help process their waste namely in the form of coffee capsules. Our team was able to separate the used coffee grounds to be used in our compost and repurpose the capsule covers as decoration on one of our projects. The week's worth of coffee ground collected amounted up to 4kg! Grateful GUI could be part of such sustainability initiatives like these that not only help reduce waste but also promote eco-friendly practices in creative ways!

We connected with Peiyi and Xinyao at WeCreate’s birthday celebration, leading to their visit to GUI during our last Balik Kampung—together with their friends (many from Allkin Singapore, thank you for the important work you do)! It’s always heartwarming to welcome like-minded individuals into our space and exchange ideas.

We’re also thrilled about their book, “How to” of Community Work, which dives deep into the science and heart of building communities. This is a topic that resonates deeply with the GUI community, where many of us are also curious about and passionate about learning more.

As part of #GUIsBigMove, the dismantling and packing at our Heartquarters has officially started, accompanied by plenty of sorting. Many of the furniture pieces we’re moving out were once discarded and given a second life at GUI. Now, after years of use, some have reached the end of their journey. We’re grateful to have truly maximized their lifespan.

At our new space, we’ll continue this ethos by embracing second-hand furniture, breathing new life into pre-loved pieces.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible volunteers who are walking this transition with us. Your dedication means the world. 🙏🏼

The GUI community fondly remembers the late Uncle Hai Sin, a cherished friend and supporter for over 10 years. A retired engineer with a boundless love for creation, Uncle Hai Sin could always be found at TouchWood, busy crafting something extraordinary.

We were once invited to his home, where we were astounded to see a complete woodworking workshop nestled within.

Uncle Hai Sin passed on last month, and while we mourn his loss, we celebrate his legacy. Over the years, he generously donated many of his woodworking tools to GUI, enabling countless others to explore their creativity.

We are incredibly blessed to have had Uncle Hai Sin as part of our journey. Though we will miss his companionship and creativity at TouchWood, his spirit will live on in the tools he shared, the projects he inspired, and the memories he leaves behind. 💚

On the last day of 2024, GUI had the incredible opportunity to be part of the Nee Soon Countdown Party, led by our very own TouchWood team. Together with participants, we turned upcycled wood into tags, showing them the possibilities of transforming waste into something meaningful.

We’re deeply grateful to the amazing team—Mei, Khin Boon, Wan Jun, Ray, Wei Jie, and everyone who supported with the logistics and preparations—for engaging the community and helping us usher in the new year with creativity, connection, and purpose.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in this experience. Here’s to more impactful moments in 2025 as we continue to inspire change, one piece of upcycled wood at a time. 💚

On the first working day of the year, the GUI team—full-time and part-time—took a meaningful morning walk to sync, connect, and heal. While we work tirelessly to nurture the land and the community for the thousands who come through GUI, it’s equally important to take the time to nurture ourselves.

We’re incredibly grateful to Santosh Kumar for guiding us on a Deep Time Walk, a reflective journey that reminded us of our connection to the earth’s vast timeline. As the Chinese saying beautifully puts it, “休息是为了走更长远的路” (Rest is for the purpose of walking a longer distance).

This pause allowed us to ground ourselves, refocus, and gather strength to walk further, together.

Special thanks to our photographers Luin, Gwen, Marcia, KK, and Yumei for capturing these meaningful moments of connection and reflection.

Here’s to moving forward with purpose and care in 2025—both for our community and ourselves. 💚

As we move into Feb 2025, GUI will shift its focus to the demolition of buildings at our current site and the handover of the land back to SLA by the end of February.

This is an emotional milestone, but it’s also a time for reflection and gratitude. The structures we take down symbolize years of memories, while the land we return carries the legacy of the community that nurtured it.

We are immensely thankful to everyone who has supported us through this transition. The spirit of GUI will live on in our new space, and together, we’ll continue to build, grow, and create a future rooted in sustainability and connection.

Yesterday marked the last Balik Kampung (BK) at GUI’s current home, and it was bittersweet. Captured beautifully by Lynn and Xiao Hui, these photos reflect the spirit, dedication, and love that have defined this space for so many years.

But while this chapter of BK has come to an end, the work continues. We still need everyone to come back! With our lease ending in Feb 2025, volunteers will return in January to focus 100% on packing and moving—a monumental task as we transition to our new home.

To everyone who has been part of our BK journey, thank you for your heart and hands. This is not goodbye; it’s a new beginning. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this journey together. 💚

Years of dedication have gone into building the topsoil at our current space, and we are committed to doing the same at our new place. The team has been planning how to enrich the soil naturally, introducing compost from our own composting efforts and transferring good microbes from our existing site to kickstart a healthy ecosystem.

Understanding the earth is fundamental to everything we do. Healthy soil means healthy plants, healthier food systems, and a stronger community. Together, we’re building not just a physical space but a foundation for sustainable growth and deeper connections with nature. 💪💚

GUI was honored to contribute a trophy made from waste wood, a reflection of our belief in sustainability and creativity. This collaboration came to life with the dedication of our TouchWood team and the invaluable help of Mr. Lim and his family, who craft this piece with care and precision.

Last week, GUI was privileged to be invited to be part of the MSE Go-Green SG Educator's Networking Session where we learnt more about Go Green SG 2025, and had the chance to be part of the sharing and networking of teachers from MOE.

Through this session, GUI was able to connect with teachers, to share with them about what we do at GUI and inspire them with our desire to connect people with nature and one another through our different programs, workshops and volunteering opportunities. We were also able to host a Grow Your Superfood Microgreen eco workshop with participants.

Aside from the session, we are grateful to have the guidance of Eugene and Pamela, from MSE, for our ongoing SG Eco Fund project. Thank you once again MSE for having us and we hope to inspire more people about environmental sustainability at GUI.

In a recent article by CNA on mud and play, we were encouraged to let children play outdoors, engage in mud play and more sensory types of play as the exposure to the microbes in dirt might actually help children develop stronger immune systems – and may even decrease their risk of developing allergies and autoimmune diseases.

In fact, the article stated that research even shows that children raised in environments with high levels of microbial exposure – such as farms or homes with pets – are less likely to develop allergies or autoimmune diseases.

Love that we get to encourage little ones at GUI to do just that! It is indeed a joy to watch little ones explore and engage in their own ways of creative outdoor play with plants and soil. We agree that letting children get dirty by playing in mud could offer more than just fun – it may be an essential part of building a strong immune system. 😍

The gratitude shown by the farmers, especially when they humbly asked for forgiveness if any of the vegetables didn’t grow as well as expected, was deeply touching. This beautiful gesture reminds us that farmers are the most grateful people—constantly giving back to the earth and their communities with humility and care. We must learn from them and carry that same gratitude in all that we do. 🌱

We were also inspired by revisiting FOLO’s large-scale composting efforts, a testament to sustainability at its best. The meal cooked by FOLO’s farmers, made with their fresh produce, was absolutely delicious and truly embodied the spirit of farm-to-table.

We are so grateful to Caroline Essame and Erica Neve for leading an inspiring round table on Nature Connection in Education at GUI before heading to the Philippines. Their insights, drawn from years of experience in Singapore, the UK, and Erica’s work with the Eden Project, enriched discussions on wellbeing, climate anxiety, nature deficit disorder, and integrating nature into education policy and youth empowerment for climate action.

We were fortunate to have a vibrant group of attendees who made the conversation even richer with their contributions.

We are excited to share that there will be a continued session in March 2025, and we hope GUI’s new home will be ready by then to host this important conversation. Caroline and Erica have graciously offered to provide further resources and support for this crucial topic, and we are eager to build on this momentum! 🌍🌱

We're proud to highlight the inspiring work of the Lorong Chencharu Bicycle Co-Op, a dedicated group reviving and upcycling bicycles at GUI. Their passion for sustainability and community shines as they repair bikes, giving them a new lease on life for those in need.
