DYK Facts around the Tenure of Judges

1 Since 1950, the median tenure for CJls has been around 400 days though the tenure of all judges of the SC has been decreasing over the seven decades.

2 In July 2014, the Law Commission recommended that the CJI should get a fixed tenure of min 2 years in case their tenure as CJI was less than 2 years.

3 Compared to the tenure of judges in other countries, Indian judges have a much shorter stint in the SC. Judges retire at the age of 75 years in the UK & at 70 years in Canada, Australia, Belgium & Norway.

4 Tenure of judges in the United States, Russia, New Zealand & Iceland is for their lifetime.

#Union Women and Child Development Minister announced a substantial reduction in child marriages in India, from 47.4% in 2006 to 23.3% in 2019-21, attributed to the Prevention of Child Marriage Act (2006).

#Speaking at the launch of the Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Child Marriage-Free India Campaign), she highlighted the prevention of over two lakh child marriages in the past year alone.

#Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Abhiyan focuses on seven high-burden states (West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Tripura, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh) and 300 districts with above-average child marriage rates.

#It aim to reduce child marriage rates to below 5% by 2029. It has launch of the 'Child Marriage Free Bharat' portal for awareness, reporting, and progress monitoring.

India gets its New CJI

✓ Justice Sanjiv Khanna was appointed by the president as the 51st Chief Justice of India. He will assume office on 11 November, a day after the current CJI, Justice DY Chandrachud, retires.

✓ Justice Khanna will serve a little over 6 months as CJl and retire on 13 May 2025.

✓ He was a part of many important benches that handled several significant cases, including the electoral bonds, which the Bench declared unconstitutional and the case related to the repeal of Article 370.

✓ Justice Khanna was appointed an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on 25 June 2005 and became a permanent judge on 20 February 2006. He is currently also the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority

As a judge, he believes his role is to be a "keeper of the law" rather than to create law.
