Sometimes, we want to sound a little bit more polite and not use the same sentences/expressions whenever we are talking. I am not saying that there is a right or wrong way of talking, but here are a few alternatives for when you want to say CAN YOU/I:

can you [...]
= would you mind [...]
= could you possibly [...]
= I would appreciate it if [...]
= if it's not too much trouble [...]
= would it be alright if [...]

Can you think of any other alternatives?

To return the favour = to do something nice for someone in return after they did something nice for you
e.g. Your friend bought you coffee, so you want to return them the favour and buy them a matcha (hopefully they like matcha...)

What do you prefer, coffee or matcha?

PS: Cami is fine, she just walked into a giant plant pot

Hey everyone! I have been feeling a little bit under the weather the past few days, but I’m finally better again! We went to the beach this morning to do some work and read and it was lovely! (Even though it was raining in the beginning…). How has your Sunday been?

Hey everyone!!

I wanted to share with you an episode of a podcast I have been listening to recently. It is by a man called Barry Hearn. He uses some very interesting vocabulary and I thought it would also be a nice challenge for you to listen and try and figure out everything he says. I will leave the link below and let me know what you think!

Good evening everyone!
We are running a little 14-day phrasal verbs challenge at The English Life Academy!

I won’t share too much with you right now but some that we introduced in the first couple of days were:

To put off - to postpone.

I always put off going to the gym until the last minute

To clear up - to resolve/explain something.

Two friends had an argument over a misunderstanding. Thankfully, a third friend was able to help them clear things up!

Practise makes perfect and you can master phrasal verbs too 😎

Happy Friday everyone! I wanted to share an interesting phrasal verb with you: to bring up

It has different meanings, depending on the context:
1. To introduce a topic in a conversation (e.g. She brought up the idea of going to Greece next summer)
2. To raise a child (e.g. They brought up their children with a strong sense of responsibility OR I was brought up in England)
3. To remember a past fact/incident (e.g. The lawyer brought up evidence from years ago)

I hope this message was useful!
Do you like learning new phrasal verbs? 🤔

Phrasal verb of the day: to give in

to give in = to finally agree to do something after resisting it or to stop trying to fight/argue

e.g. I didn’t want to eat dessert but eventually gave in to the temptation 🍰

Can you think of another example using this phrasal verb?

I also have a little activity here on past modals. A little test to see how easy or tricky this is:

The Mysterious Disappearance
Last summer, a local artist mysteriously disappeared from his studio. His friends have been speculating about what might have happened. They believe he _ (1) left suddenly due to personal reasons. Some think he _ (2) involved in an accident, as he was known to take long walks near ___ (3) cliffs.
Witnesses reported seeing him near _ (4) café shortly before his disappearance. He _ (5) been meeting someone there, but no one knows who it was. His close friend mentioned that he _ (6) expressed feeling overwhelmed by his recent projects, which might have pushed him to seek _ (7) escape.
In the
days following his disappearance, the police _ (8) found any concrete evidence. They _ (9) investigated his studio and discovered some unfinished paintings that suggested he _ (10) working on something significant. This led them to believe that he _ (11) faced pressure to deliver his work.
As time passed, many locals started to theorize that he _ (12) simply decided to start anew somewhere far away. However, his family _ (13) ruled out this possibility, insisting he ___ (14) never abandon them without explanation.
Now, months later, the case remains unsolved, leaving the community in ___ (15) state of uncertainty.

Gap Fill Activity
Fill in the blanks with the correct past modal of deduction: "might have," "could have," "must have," "may have," "can’t have," or leave it blank as appropriate.

Happy Monday everyone! Have you ever heard of the word ubiquitous? 🫣

This is how you pronounce it /juːˈbɪkwətəs/ and it refers to something that is found everywhere or is very common

e.g. coffee shops are so ubiquitous these days, you can see them on every corner ☕️

Can you think of any other example? 🤔

This is what some of my weekends look like... working in a busy café with something very important: my noise-cancelling headphones. You could say 'Benjamin, if you don't like the noise around you, why don't you just work from home?'.
Well, first of all, I like having a change of scenery and working from different places every now and then. And second of all, the noises around me don't disturb me - yes, they make it a little bit more difficult to focus sometimes, but it also feels nice to be around people. And, that is when my headphones come in handy! 😜

My question to you is: How would feel if you worked remotely 24/7? 😉🤔

🚶🏼‍♂️‍➡️ Go for a walk: Moving your body and getting fresh air helps to clear mental blocks and get back to learning with focus
💤 Get some rest: Your brain processes information best when it’s well-rested. Don’t underestimate the power of sleep.
❤️ Spend time with loved ones: Quality time with family or friends helps you feel grounded and motivated - it is like recharging your emotional battery, giving you the energy to focus when you’re back to learning
🧹 Declutter your space: A clean space means a clear mind. Organizing your surroundings helps organise your thoughts too and clear distractions while you are learning
🍏 Eat healthy meals: Fuel your body with the right nutrients. A healthy body leads to a sharp, focused mind and helps you to stay productive throughout the day
📝 Write in a journal: Journaling helps to organise thoughts and track your progress. Writing down your thoughts clears your mind and allows you to focus better
🧘🏼‍♂️ Practise mindfulness: A moment of mindfulness can reduce stress and improve focus. Being present in the moment helps you stay calm and approach learning with a fresh mind

Fill your cup with these small changes, and you’ll come back stronger than ever! ☕️
