🔆Bio-bitumen

Union minister for road transport and highways inaugurated a 1km stretch of Asia's first highway with a bio-bitumen blended surface.

It is a petroleum-free alternativeto bitumen, or asphalt.
It is designed to lower the carbon footprint of road construction.
It is made using non-petroleum-based renewable resources and can be made from vegetable oils, synthetic polymers, or both, making it a more sustainable model long term.

📍Advantages:

Sustainable: It is generated from renewable materials. This makes it a more environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-based bitumen, which is derived from limited resources.
Low Carbon Footprint:As it is derived from organic materials that have absorbed carbon dioxide during their development, it often has a lower environmental impact than standard bitumen.
Improved environmental performance:It is less toxic and detrimental to the environment than regular bitumen. It contains fewer heavy metals and other hazardous pollutants

🔆Line of Actual Control (LAC)

The LAC is the demarcation that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory.
India considers the LAC to be 3,488 km long, while the Chinese consider it to be only around 2,000 km.
It is divided into three sectors:
🔸 the eastern sector which spans Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim;
🔸 the middle sector in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh,and;
🔸 the western sector in Ladakh.
LAC in the eastern sector consisting of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim is called the McMahon Line which is 1,140 km long.
Major friction points along the India-China border
🔸 Depsang Plains: This area is located in the northernmost part of Ladakh and has seen incursions by Chinese troops in the past.
🔸 Demchok: This area is located in eastern Ladakh and has seen disputes over the boundary between India and China.
🔸Pangong Lake: This area has been a major flashpoint between the two countries, with Chinese troops attempting to change the status quo on the LAC in the region.
🔸 Gogra and Hot Springs: These two areas are located in eastern Ladakh and have seen standoffs between Indian and Chinese troops in recent years.
🔸 Arunachal Pradesh: This northeastern Indian state is claimed by China as part of its territory and has been a major point of contention between the two countries.
How is the LAC different from the Line of Control with Pakistan?
🔸The LoC emerged from the 1948 ceasefire line negotiated by the UN after the Kashmir War.
🔸 It was designated as the LoC in 1972, following the Shimla Agreement between the two countries. It is delineated on a map signed by DGMOs of both armies and has the international sanctity of a legal agreement.
🔸 The LAC, is only a concept and it is not agreed upon by the two countries, neither delineated on a map or demarcated on the ground.

Lake Kariba:

It is a lake in central Africa, along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

It is positioned 810 miles upstream from the Indian Ocean.

It is the world's largest man-made lake, covering an area of 2,000 square miles (5,200 square km).

It was formed by damming the Zambezi River in the Kariba Gorge, where the river narrows between hills of hard rock 250 miles (400 km) below Victoria Falls.

The Kariba Dam consists of a double-arch wall. It is 128 meters in height, 617 meters in length, 13 meters wide at its top, and 24 meters wide at the base.

It provides considerable electric power to Zambia and Zimbabwe and supports a thriving commercial fishing industry.

The lake encompasses 102 islands, including well-known ones like Chete Island and Spurwing Island.

Chete Island boasts the world's largest expanse of protected, undeveloped wetlands and hosts the largest single population of African elephants.

LI-FI

Li-Fi, or light fidelity, is a Visible Light Communications (VLC) system.
Unlike Wi-Fi, which uses radio waves, Li-Fi runs on visible light.
It transmits data at terabits per second speeds — more than 100 times the speed of Wi-Fi.
It accommodates a photo-detector to receive light signals and a signal processing element to convert the data into ‘stream-able’ content.

ADVANTAGES OF LIFI

Li-Fi could make a huge impact on the internet of things, with data transferred at much higher levels with even more devices able to connect to one another.
Due to its shorter range, Li-Fi is more secure than Wi-Fi.
Li-Fi systems consume less power.

DISADVANTAGES OF LIFI

Main challenge is to create a Li-Fi ecosystem, which will need conversion of existing smartphones into Li-Fi enabled ones by the use of a converter/adapter.
Visual light can’t pass through opaque objects and needs line of sight for communication.
Interference from external light sources, such as sunlight and bulbs.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF LIFI

Li-Fi can be used in street & traffic lights. Traffic lights can communicate to vehicles and with each other.
Through use of Li-Fi, traffic control can be made intelligent and real-time adaptable. Each traffic and street light post can be converted into access points to convert roadsides into wireless hotspots.
Vehicles having LED-based headlights and tail lamps can communicate with each other and prevent accidents by exchanging information.
Visible light being safer, they can also be used in places where radio waves can’t be used such as petrochemical and nuclear plants and hospitals.
They can be used in aircraft, where most of control communication is performed through radio waves.
Li-Fi can easily work underwater, where Wi-Fi fails completely, thereby throwing open endless opportunities
for military & navigational operations.
Transmitting power wirelessly, wherein smartphones will not only receive data through Li-Fi, but will also receive power to charge itself.

Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT)

It is a quasi-judicial institution set up in January 1941 and specializes in dealing with appeals under the Direct Taxes Acts.
Starting in 1941 with six Members constituting three Benches - one each at Delhi, Kolkata (Calcutta), and Mumbai (Bombay), the number of Benches has progressively increased, and presently ITAT has 63 Benches in 27 different cities, covering almost all the cities having a seat of the High Court.
Each bench has an accountant member and a judicial member.
The President of the ITAT constitutes a bench from among the members of the ITAT.
In some cases, a special bench with three or more members may be constituted to dispose of income tax appeals.
ITAT serves as the final fact-finding body in tax disputes, offering both taxpayers and the income tax authorities a convenient platform to resolve disputes.
It adjudicates appeals made under the Income Tax Act of 1961.
It functions under the Ministry of Law and Justice.

Who can file an appeal in ITAT?

A tax appeal can be filed by a taxpayer who does not agree with the assessment order or any other order, passed by an income-tax authority.
An appeal before the ITAT is generally filed by the taxpayer to contest any order passed by the Commissioner of Income-tax (Appeals).
Similarly, an income-tax department can also file an appeal against any order passed by the Commissioner of Income-tax (Appeals) before the ITAT.
The orders passed by the ITAT are final. An appeal lies to the High Court only if a substantial question of law arises for determination.
ITAT functions under the regional High Court’s jurisdiction and must adhere to the rules of the same.
ITAT is subordinate to both the region’s High Court and the Indian Supreme Court.

🔆Genomic Study to Uncover Population History of South Asia

In a ground-breaking move, the Indian government has launched an ambitious scientific study using both ancient and modern genomics to uncover the population history of South Asia.

This study aims to resolve long-standing debates and conflicting theories about the origins and migration patterns of ancient Indian communities.

The research is being carried out by the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI), which functions under the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow, under the Department of Science & Technology.

The project, titled “Reconstruction of the Population History of South Asia using Ancient and Modern Genomics,” focuses on DNA extracted from ancient skeletal remains to provide new insights into the region's past.

📍Key Features of the Study:

Scope & Focus:

The project involves studying 300 ancient skeletal remains, primarily cranial bones, tooth fragments, and other bone pieces.

These remains have been collected from archaeological sites in India and Pakistan, including well-known sites from the Indus Valley Civilization like Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro (now in Pakistan), as well as locations like Burzahom (J&K), Nagarjunakonda (Andhra Pradesh), Maski (Karnataka), Ropar (Punjab), and Lothal (Gujarat).

These remains were excavated between 1922 and 1958 and are currently in the custody of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

📍Objective:

The study aims to reconstruct the origins of ancient Indian communities by extracting and analysing DNA from the remains.

It will also shed light on the living conditions, diets, disease prevalence, and migration patterns of ancient people, allowing for a clearer understanding of how populations moved and interacted over time.

This research is expected to help answer fundamental questions about the gene pool and environmental adaptation of ancient Indian civilizations.

The Aryan Migration Debate:
The project aims to address one of the most significant and controversial questions in Indian history: Did the Aryan migration happen?

Aryan Invasion Theory:
Proposed by Western scholars in the 19th century, this theory posits that a group of Aryans, fair-skinned people from Central Asia, migrated to India around 2000-1500 BC, playing a major role in shaping the civilization of the Indian subcontinent.

Indigenous Theory:
Many modern Indian archaeologists argue that the Aryans were indigenous to the region and that they lived along the Saraswati River.

When the river dried up, they migrated to other parts of India and settled in the Indus Valley

📍Demand for Dravida Nadu

Going back to the journey of Regionalism in India, it is noticeable that it emerged with Dravidian Movement, which started in Tamil Nadu in 1925. This movement, also known as ‘Self-Respect Movement’ initially focused on empowering Dalits, non-Brahmins, and poor people.
Later it stood against imposition of Hindi as sole official language on non-Hindi speaking areas. But it was the demand of carving out their own Dravidistan or Dravida Nadu, which made it a secessionist movement. As early as 1960s the DMK proposed that the states of Madras, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore should secede from the Indian union and form an independent ‘Republic of Dravida Nadu’.

📍Telangana Movement
In the years after the formation of Andhra Pradesh, people of Telangana expressed dissatisfaction over howthe agreements and guarantees were implemented.
Discontent with the 1956 Gentleman’s agreement intensified in January 1969, when the guarantees that had been agreed upon, were supposed to lapse.
Government employees and opposition members of the state legislative assembly threatened ‘direct action’ in support of the students who spearheaded the movement.
This movement since then finally culminated with formation of separate state of Telangana on 2nd June, 2014.
It should be noted that roots of disparity in two regions was in colonial rule. Andhra was under direct rule of crown while Telangana was ruled by Nizam of Hyderabad, who was not so efficient ruler . So over time Andhra got more developed in comparison to Telangana.

🔆 "Bharatiya Antriksh Station"

India will have its own Space Station by 2035, which will be known as "Bharatiya Antriksh Station"

ISRO and Department of Biotechnology Sign Landmark MoU, Ushering in New Era of Space and Biotech Innovation

A space station (or orbital station) is a spacecraft which remains in orbit and hosts humans for extended periods of time. It therefore is an artificial satellite featuring habitation facilities.

The first space station was Salyut 1 (1971), hosting the first crew, of the ill-fated Soyuz 11. Consecutively space stations have been operated since Skylab (1973) and occupied since 1987 with the Salyut successor Mir. Uninterrupted occupation has been sustained since the operational transition from the Mir to the International Space Station (ISS), with its first occupation in 2000.

Currently there are two fully operational space stations – the ISS and China's Tiangong Space Station (TSS), which have been occupied since October 2000 with Expedition 1 and since June 2022 with Shenzhou 14.

✔️Types of Winds

🔸 Horse Latitude - Horse latitudes or subtropical highs are subtropical latitudes between 30 and 35 degrees both north and south over the oceans.

🔸 Planetary winds - Planetary winds comprise winds distributed throughout the lower atmosphere.

🔸 Trade winds—The trade winds reliably blow east to west just north and south of the equator.

🔸 Westerlies Winds—The westerlies are also known as anti-trades and prevailing westerlies. They are found in the middle latitudes between 30 and 60 degrees latitude, blowing from the high-pressure area in the horse latitudes towards the poles.

🔸 Polar winds - Polar winds blow from the polar high pressure to the sub-polar low-pressure area. The polar wind or plasma fountain is a permanent outflow of plasma from the polar regions of Earth's magnetosphere, caused by the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's atmosphere.

🔸 Doldrums winds- The Intertropical Convergence Zone, known by sailors as the doldrums or the calms because of its monotonous windless weather, is the area where the northeast and the southeast trade winds converge. It encircles Earth near the thermal equator though its specific position varies seasonally.

🔸 Periodic winds - The winds that change their direction periodically with a change in season are called periodic winds.

Local winds:- Local differences in temperature and pressure on the land cause changes in air pressure due to which local wind blows.

🔆Cyclone Dana: Impact on Odisha and West Bengal

📍Understanding Landfall

Landfall refers to the event of a cyclone system coming ashore.
It is a crucial stage in a cyclone's life cycle.
The intensity of the cyclone during landfall determines the extent of damage.

📍Cyclone Dana's Impact :

Cyclone Dana caused heavy rain in Odisha and West Bengal.
It led to evacuations, disruptions in power and communication, and potential flooding.
The extent of damage depends on the cyclone's intensity and the region it affects.

Key Points
Tropical cyclones are rotating storm systems that develop over warm ocean waters.
The eye of the cyclone is the area of calm winds at the center.
A cyclone's landfall can last for several hours.
The intensity of a cyclone decreases after landfall due to loss of moisture and increased surface friction.

UPSC Questions
Prelims: What is the name of the cyclone that affected Odisha and West Bengal in 2024?
A) Amphan
B) Yaas
C) Tauktae
D) Dana
Mains: Discuss the challenges faced by coastal states in India due to cyclones. What are the key measures that can be taken to mitigate the impact of cyclones and ensure the safety of vulnerable populations?

Bushveld Igneous Complex

Researchers recently discovered pockets of living microbes in a 2-billion-year-old rock from the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa, providing insights into early life on Earth and potentially aiding the search for life on Mars.

📍Bushveld Igneous Complex

It is the largest layered igneous intrusion within the Earth's crust.

It is located in northern South Africa, exposed at the edge of the Transvaal Basin.

It covers a pear-shaped area of over 66,000 sq. Km

The complex varies in thickness, sometimes reaching 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) thick.

It is renowned for containing some of the richest ore deposits.

The complex contains the world's largest reserves of platinum-group metals (PGMs), i.e., platinum, palladium, osmium, iridium, rhodium, and ruthenium, along with vast quantities of iron, tin, chromium, titanium, and vanadium.

🔆Coastal Flooding and Tree Resilience: A Study

Impact of Coastal Flooding :

Rising sea levels and coastal flooding pose significant threats to coastal ecosystems.
Different tree species respond differently to flooding.
Understanding these responses is crucial for effective forest management.
Dendrochronology: A Tool for Understanding Tree Growth
Dendrochronology is a method used to study tree growth patterns by analyzing tree rings.
Tree rings can reveal information about past environmental conditions and how trees responded to them.
Dendrochronology can help identify which tree species are more resilient to flooding.

📍Key Findings :

The study found that some tree species, such as American holly, are more resilient to flooding than others.
Loblolly pine and pitch pine trees are less tolerant to flooding.
The study highlights the importance of site-specific factors in determining tree resilience.

📍Implications for Forest Management :

The findings of this study can help forest managers prioritize conservation efforts.
By identifying vulnerable species, managers can take proactive steps to protect them.
This research can contribute to the development of more effective coastal forest management strategies.

UPSC Questions :

Symbolic Changes

Removing the Blindfold: This ancient blindfolded statue, representing that justice should not be blind to passion or influence from outside sources like wealth or status was viewed to have been removed-the current view is justice knows all and sees everything of its status.

Constitution vs. Sword: The sword in the old statue symbolizes the power to enforce law and punishment. The new statue holding the Constitution focuses on justice with a constitutional foundation, pertinent to the changing legal structure of India.

Attire: This is a transformation from the trends of the Western robe dress code to donning an Indian saree - an aspect that shows a larger transition toward assuming the Indian identity in the judicial institution.

Open Eyes: The old statue has open eyes. This would illustrate that this is coming up with proactive justice that knows the problems in society but fights for fairness instead of equality.

These changes were initiated under Chief Justice DY Chandrachud's leadership, aiming to modernize the judiciary and move away from colonial legacies.

The open-eyed Lady Justice statue at the Supreme Court of India signifies a transformative view of justice's role in society, reflecting modern values and principles.
