As Phnom Penh keeps growing and modernizing, public transportation is being seen as an increasingly important option for tackling traffic jams. But as the city bus drivers mark the 10th anniversary of their service in September, they find themselves in an uphill task as they have to constantly compete against private vehicles for lanes on the roads, where traffic signs, lights, and rules are often ignored.

We’re thrilled to have Dr. Tilman Baumgärtel, professor of media studies at Hochschule Mainz, join us at the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) of the Royal University of Phnom Penh as a visiting professor this semester!
Dr. Tilman Baumgärtel is a professor of media studies at Hochschule Mainz in Germany. He taught journalism and media studies at the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh from 2009 to 2012. Currently on sabbatical from his university in Germany, he has returned to DMC for one semester with the support of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD).
At the DMC, he teaches "In-Depth Reporting and Investigative Journalism" to Year 3 students, focusing on a project about the internet's history in Cambodia, and "Media and Society" to Year 4 students, focusing on Artificial Intelligence.
