Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav launches special song for Mahakumbh 2025

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Wednesday unveiled a special song created by All India Radio and Doordarshan, dedicated to the upcoming Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj.

The song is expected to serve as an anthem for the event, resonating with the global audience and amplifying the significance of this grand pilgrimage.

https://x.com/airnewsalerts/status/1876948899598131256

With only five days remaining, the Mahakumbh will take place in Prayagraj, the revered “king of pilgrimages,” from January 13 to February 26, and is expected to draw around 45 crore devotees from all corners of the world. The event, which occurs every 12 years, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, attracting millions of pilgrims, saints, and spiritual leaders.

As the date approaches, the first arrivals have already started to make their way to Prayagraj. Saints, ascetics, and devotees are flocking to the city in anticipation of the holy event. The atmosphere is charged with religious fervor as worship has already commenced with the establishment of the Dharmadhwaja (religious flag) in various Akharas.

Kalash Yatras, a traditional procession where devotees carry sacred water, are also being organized, signaling the commencement of the religious rituals ahead of the Mahakumbh. With every passing day, new dimensions of spiritual progress are being added to the festivities, and the preparations are in full swing to host the monumental gathering.

ith a ₹2,817 crore budget, the initiative aims to develop Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for agriculture, integrating data on farmers, land holdings, and crop types to provide more efficient, data-driven services. It includes the launch of AgriStack, a digital platform that will provide digital IDs to 11 crore farmers and help in the digital crop survey.

In addition to these efforts, the government has been actively promoting natural farming through the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), with an outlay of ₹2,481 crore. The initiative aims to promote environmentally sustainable farming practices and reduce dependency on chemicals.

The government is also focusing on developing agroforestry, which has been incorporated under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) to support farmers in planting trees on their farmlands, thus generating additional income while contributing to environmental sustainability. This initiative has seen the planting of millions of trees across the country.

Other initiatives such as the National Beekeeping & Honey Mission, the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, and the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds) are also in place to further support farmers’ income and ensure food security by enhancing domestic production of edible oils, honey, and horticultural crops.

Each person’s risk for developing cancer, including alcohol-related cancers, is determined by a complex interaction of biological, environmental and social factors.

ARE THERE ANY HEALTH BENEFITS OF ALCOHOL?

A January 2025 report from the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine concludes that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a lower rate of deaths from any cause compared with no consumption. While it did find links between alcohol and cancer, it also found evidence to suggest that consuming moderate amounts of alcohol is associated with lower risks for nonfatal heart attacks, nonfatal strokes, and deaths from heart disease.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines one alcoholic beverage as 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor, 5 ounces of wine with 12% alcohol, or 12 ounces of beer with 5% alcohol.

n was not the war theatre of the 1965 India-Pakistan war. India’s decision to join the war after Pakistan’s attack on Indian territory proved to be the turning point, helping Bangladesh achieve a goal that once seemed unachievable.

Had the Mukti Bahini not received external support, Operation Searchlight could have seriously affected the East Pakistan freedom movement and its hopes to break the colonial shackles of West Pakistan.

ment against the West Pakistani military and supporting militias. Comprising members of the Bengali military, paramilitary forces, police, and civilians, these fighters engaged in guerrilla warfare.

India’s support bolstered their efforts. The geographical separation of 1,000 miles of Indian territory between West and East Pakistan meant that Pakistan could not easily reinforce its military presence in East Pakistan with additional air and naval power.

West Pakistan had previously exhibited hostility towards India, notably in the conflicts of 1947 and the 1965 war, which it lost. Its actions in East Pakistan heightened diplomatic tensions and prompted a military buildup in India.

The tipping point occurred on December 3, 1971, when Pakistan launched pre-emptive air strikes on Indian airfields. This act of aggression compelled India to formally enter the war, engaging its Army, Navy, and Air Force in a coordinated response to both the humanitarian crisis and threats to its national sovereignty. Before this, India had adopted a restrained approach, engaging in diplomatic efforts and appealing to West Pakistani leaders to create safe corridors for refugees to return. These appeals were ignored.

THE QUICK END

India’s entry into the 1971 war was driven by the humanitarian crisis and direct threats to its national security. By launching joint military operations with the Mukti Bahini, effective coordination and intelligence sharing were achieved, significantly disrupting Pakistani military efforts. Through a series of strategic offensives, the joint forces rapidly overran West Pakistan’s military presence throughout Dhaka and East Pakistan.

On December 16, 1971, Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi of Pakistan unconditionally surrendered to Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora of India, along with 93,000 troops, marking one of the largest surrenders since World War II. The war officially ended with India’s unilateral ceasefire on December 17.

WHY INDIA’S ENGAGEMENT WAS NECESSARY FOR A JOY BANGLA MOVEMENT

The success of the “Joy Bangla” movement on December 16, 1971, could only be possible with India’s commitment to the cause. With the onset of Operation Searchlight, India opened its borders to refugees, providing massive relief operations while simultaneously engaging in diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis. Military intervention by India was the last resort.

The military intervention ultimately helped realize the goals of the “Joy Bangla” movement.

Twenty-three years of suppression, from 1947 to 1970, with West Pakistan ruling East Pakistan through military involvement, left the eastern territory with a strong desire for independence, an aspiration difficult to achieve in an economy controlled by West Pakistani industrialists and a polity dominated by a West Pakistan-based military ruler allied with exploitative politicians.

The increasing number of refugees in India proved the fact that there was no internal security structure and local and regional administration available for them to take over the West Pakistan-led apparatus.

Over ten million refugees fled to India in ten months, while thirty million were internally displaced. The refugee headcount included Bengali military wing officials, soldiers, and police personnel. According to the Bangladesh High Commission in London, thousands of families of officials, soldiers, and activists from East Pakistan were interned in West Pakistan. Killings and rapes became daily events of horror to be observed. India’s daily refugee count surged from 17,000 to 60,000, with numbers continuing to rise.

The freedom fighters of East Pakistan had the courage and will to fight for independence, but they lacked the strength of a coordinated war strategy and the full complement of military resources—army, air force, navy, arms, and ammunition—to defeat West Pakistan’s full-fledged military. They had to fight a country’s army that had exposure to past war experiences, something they didn’t have, as East Pakista[...]

disobedience movement. On March 7, 1971, the Awami League mobilized 50,000 Bengalis to start a peaceful protest in Dhaka. However, on March 25, 1971, Sheikh Mujib was arrested and airlifted to West Pakistan with the launch of Operation Searchlight.

OPERATION SEARCHLIGHT

Following Sheikh Mujib’s declaration of independence for East Pakistan, West Pakistan launched a brutal crackdown on Bengalis. Operation Searchlight, initiated by West Pakistan on March 25, 1971, stands as one of the most horrific state-run military operations in history. According to various investigative estimates, including the Russian newspaper Pravda, approximately 3 million East Pakistanis were murdered by Pakistani troops and supporting militias.

In the 1970 general election, West Pakistan-based parties failed to win any seats in East Pakistan, underscoring the widespread support for the Awami League and its pro-independence stance among civilians, police, and security forces in East Pakistan. Consequently, West Pakistan’s troops and supporting radical militias targeted these Bengali-speaking populations across the region.

Deploying hundreds of thousands of troops across Dhaka and throughout East Bengal, supported by air and naval power, the main targets were Awami League politicians, military personnel, East Bengal police, and Bengali-speaking civilians.

An analytical report published in the Dhaka Tribune indicates that one of Operation Searchlight’s objectives was to disarm and arrest Bengali soldiers and policemen serving in East Pakistan. Another aim was to attack Hindu-majority areas of Dhaka. On the night of March 25, 1971, casualty figures in Dhaka alone reached approximately 35,000.

During the nine months of the operation, hundreds of thousands of Bengali women were subjected to rape. According to a report in the Smithsonian, around 400,000 women underwent late-term abortions, although the actual number is believed to be much higher.

REFUGEES IN INDIA

The brutal crackdown compelled millions of Bangladeshis to flee to India. By May 1971, India was hosting 1.5 million refugees, a number that swelled to around 10 million by December 1971, making it the largest refugee crisis in the modern world. Internally, the military operation displaced approximately 30 million people within Bangladesh.

This massive influx placed a significant burden on India. Nevertheless, the country stepped forward to assist, despite lacking domestic laws to manage refugees and not being a signatory to the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention or its 1967 protocol. India established 825 refugee camps across seven states, with 19 central camps capable of accommodating up to 50,000 refugees each.

ECONOMIC BURDEN

The economic burden was significant. India had to reassess its Fourth Five-Year Plan. The 1971–72 Budget stated, “The country’s resources, physical as well as fiscal, were greatly strained by developments across the border, the influx of nearly ten million refugees and the outbreak of hostilities in December 1971.” 1 Despite these challenges, the economy responded effectively, as noted in the budget document.

A World Bank assessment, based on 9 million refugees, estimated the direct cost to India at approximately US$700 million from April 1, 1971, to March 31, 1972, which equates to around US$5.5 billion today. India managed this expenditure largely through internal resources. According to a CIA document from March 1972, released in 2010, the Indian government spent about 4% of its planned central government expenditure for FY1971 on refugee care.

INDIA’S STAND

India supported Sheikh Mujib’s call for independence but initially refrained from participating in the war. Instead, it provided moral and material support to the independence movement. On April 17, 1971, a provisional government of Bangladesh was formed and relocated to Calcutta as the “Bangladesh Government in Exile.”

Meanwhile, the freedom fighters of East Pakistan formed the Mukti Bahini, an armed resistance move[...]

https://ddnews.gov.in/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/IMG-20241209-WA0038-300x159.jpg

Initially, in 1949–50, East Pakistan’s GDP was 13,130 million rupees, more than West Pakistan’s 11,830 million rupees. In education, East Pakistan had 29,633 primary schools in 1947, compared to just 8,413 in West Pakistan. Similarly, East Pakistan had 50 colleges, while West Pakistan had 40.

WEST PAKISTAN’S COLONY

Despite East Pakistan’s higher GDP, better educational levels, and stable cultural heritage, data analysis reveals that West Pakistan monopolized industrialization and other benefits by installing a lame-duck government in East Pakistan.

East Pakistan was the primary source of jute, united Pakistan’s key export commodity. Logistically, industrial units for cotton textiles should have been developed there, but the country’s leadership chose to establish them in West Pakistan. Economic institutions and infrastructure developments, such as seaports, railways, and roads essential for promoting industrial growth further, were largely concentrated in West Pakistan only.

Conversely, East Pakistan experienced limited development, primarily aimed at supporting industries located in West Pakistan, according to the study. Furthermore, most industries in East Pakistan were developed by industrialists based in West Pakistan. Just 11% of industries were owned by Bengalis, making East Pakistan a labour hub for West Pakistan.

The deteriorating situation of East Pakistan over the next two decades reflects this exploitation. While East Pakistan was once more prosperous than West Pakistan, by 1970, the situation had reversed entirely.

https://ddnews.gov.in/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/IMG-20241209-WA0037-300x171.jpg
Data from the study reveal that by 1968–69, West Pakistan’s GDP exceeded East Pakistan’s by 34%, and its per capita income was 62% higher. In united Pakistan’s first and second Five-Year Plans, 68% of the allocations went to West Pakistan, slightly reduced to 64% in the third plan. Pakistan’s economy largely depended on foreign assistance, of which 70% to 80% benefited West Pakistan. Although East Pakistan contributed up to 70% of Pakistan’s export earnings, 75% of imports were directed to West Pakistan.

CALL FOR SELF-DETERMINATION

These factors, language suppression, cultural differences, economic exploitation, mass arrests, killings, disappearances, and colonial treatment, left East Pakistanis facing an uncertain future after two decades of hostility.

In the 1954 regional elections, a coalition known as the United Front defeated the Muslim League, which had been based in West Pakistan and had ruled East Pakistan until then. In February 1966, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman of the Awami League presented his Six-Point Charter to the then-military ruler of Pakistan, Field Marshal Ayub Khan, demanding autonomy and greater control over East Pakistan’s economic affairs. These Six Points became central to Bengali nationalism and eventually transformed into a liberation movement following the 1970 general elections in Pakistan.

1970 PAKISTAN ELECTION: A TURNING POINT – EAST PAKISTAN’S CALL FOR INDEPENDENCE

Pakistan conducted its first general election on December 7, 1970, which is regarded as the most transparent election in the country’s history, according to Geo News, a major Pakistani news platform. The main contenders were Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), based in West Pakistan, and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Awami League, based in East Pakistan. The Awami League achieved a landslide victory, winning 170 seats, while the PPP secured only 81.

Despite the Awami League’s clear mandate to govern all of Pakistan, the country’s military ruler, General Yahya Khan, and the PPP’s Bhutto opposed this outcome. They dismissed the election results and imposed martial law, denying the Awami League its rightful leadership.

This action led to widespread protests and riots in East Pakistan. In response, Sheikh Mujib initiated a civil [...]

Delhi’s air quality deteriorates, AQI in ‘very poor’ category

The air quality in Delhi remains a grave concern as the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 304 in the “very poor” category on Thursday at 6 a.m., according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

While a slight improvement was observed earlier in the week when AQI fell to the “poor” category on Tuesday, pollution levels escalated again by Wednesday and have continued to remain critical.

Several areas in the national capital reported air quality in the “severe” range, further exacerbating the situation.

As per CPCB data, Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 357, Ashok Vihar 318, Bawana 341, Burari Crossing 320, Jahangirpuri 354, and Mundka 364. Other locations such as Dwarka Sector 8 (332), Narela (312), and Shadipur (351) also registered severe air pollution levels. Meanwhile, areas like Chandni Chowk (293), Lodhi Road (261), and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (267) remained in the “poor” to “very poor” categories.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), Faridabad recorded an AQI of 176 in the “moderate” category, while Gurugram (221), Greater Noida (227), Ghaziabad (260), and Noida (282) remained in the “poor” category. The persistent smog engulfing the Delhi-NCR region has led to reduced visibility and increased health risks.

According to CPCB, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51-100 ‘satisfactory’, 101-200 ‘moderate’, 201-300 ‘poor’, 301-400 ‘very poor’, 401-450 ‘severe’, and above 450 ‘severe plus’, as per the CPCB.

In response to the worsening air quality, the Supreme Court on Monday refused to ease restrictions imposed under Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which aims to reduce pollution levels. Key measures include banning the entry of non-essential trucks, except those carrying essential goods or running on cleaner fuels such as LNG, CNG, BS-VI diesel, or electricity. Construction activities on public infrastructure projects have also been suspended to curb dust pollution.

Authorities have advised residents to minimise outdoor activities and take preventive measures to safeguard their health.

The alarming pollution levels underline the urgent need for sustainable and effective pollution control initiatives to combat the ongoing crisis in the region.

n flags honouring the dead now occupies a corner of Kyiv’s Independence Square, once the beating heart of the mass pro-European protests that toppled Ukraine’s then Moscow-backed president in 2014.

Russia responded to the protests by seizing Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula, Crimea, and backing a paramilitary insurgency in the east that killed 14,000 people before two series of talks, in the so-called Minsk format, halted the fighting with Kyiv.

After German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called Putin on Friday for the first time in nearly two years, Zelenskiy said the move reduced the Russian leader’s isolation. He also spoke out against the idea of renewed Minsk-style talks.

“We want to warn everyone: there will be no ‘Minsk 3’; what we need is real peace,” he said.

The Israeli military said its fighter jets carried out a series of attacks in the southern Beirut area, targeting weapons warehouses, military headquarters and other infrastructures used by Hezbollah.

“We say God help us … because it seems that things are developing, it is getting worse, and I don’t even know if there is a solution now,” said Ayat, a 33-year-old Lebanese woman.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) said five people were killed in airstrikes on the towns of Bazourieh and Jmaijmeh in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli airstrike in Baalbek killed another three people.

According to Lebanon’s health ministry, Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,365 people and wounded 14,344 across Lebanon since Oct. 7, 2023.

Hezbollah attacks have killed about 100 civilians and soldiers in northern Israel, the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and southern Lebanon over the last year, according to Israel.

onding to rapid glacier retreat. As ice melts, less pressure is exerted on the Earth’s crust and mantle.

Volcanologists worry this could destabilize magma reservoirs and appears to be leading to more magma being created, building up pressure underground.

Some 245 volcanoes across the world lie under or near ice and could be at risk.

OCEAN SLOWDOWN

The warming of the Atlantic could hasten the collapse of a key current system, which scientists warn could already be sputtering.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which transports warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, has helped to keep European winters milder for centuries.

Research in 2018 showed that AMOC has weakened by about 15% since 1950, while research published in February in the journal Science Advances, suggested that it could be closer to a critical slowdown than previously thought.

tock markets have surged to almost one-month highs as investors expect a meeting of top policymakers in Beijing this week to approve local government debt refinancing and spending. Chinese blue chips lost early gains to turn flat, and Hong Kong stocks fell over 2%.

Mexico’s peso briefly dropped to as low as 20.8038 per dollar for the first time since August 2022, more than 3% below its previous close – the biggest such tumble since Mexico’s election in summer roiled domestic assets.

Ukraine’s international sovereign bonds rallied nearly 2 cents, boosted by bets that a second Trump term could lead to a quicker end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The sharp rise in the dollar pressured oil prices, and other commodities, as it makes them more expensive when buying in other currencies.

e of the euro and the yen overnight – dealing even more pain to emerging markets since over 60% of international debt is denominated in dollars.

Mexico could be the hardest hit given Trump’s rhetoric on closing the border, which comes against an already deteriorating domestic outlook.

“Mexico is most at risk,” TS Lombard’s Jon Harrison said as the Mexican peso fell 3% against the dollar.

Mexico is especially vulnerable because trade tensions and threats of deportations could exacerbate domestic problems like cartel activity and the government’s failure to curb violence, Harrison added.

Among potential winners, Brazil might enjoy greater trade with China given that Beijing replaced all its U.S. soybean imports with Brazilian ones when trade tensions flared during Trump’s first presidency.

But Europe could also suffer the added blow of increased defence costs if Trump reduces support for NATO.

The continent has relied on a U.S. military presence since the end of World War Two and with no end in sight to Russia’s war in Ukraine, Europe will be forced to fill any gap left by a U.S. retreat.

But government debt in Europe is already close to 90% of GDP, so finances are stretched and governments will struggle to stimulate an economy suffering from trade barriers while funding military spending at the same time.

Trump’s deregulation efforts are likely to play out over a longer period but internationally-agreed proposals aimed at making banks more resilient, commonly known as Basel III, could be a first casualty.

The new rules are set to apply from Jan. 1 and policymakers are already debating whether they should go ahead even if the U.S. pulls out.

Trump recently said he would let former presidential candidate and anti-vaccine advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “go wild” on vaccine and healthcare policy. Kennedy has said that Trump promised him control over the FDA, CDC, HHS, and the USDA. Those jobs could potentially give him control over what vaccines are approved and whether Americans are recommended to receive them. Trump transition co-chair Howard Lutnick has said Kennedy is not going to be put in charge of the Department of Health and Human Services, but suggested he could advise on vaccines.

Jeremy Levin, CEO of biotech company Ovid Therapeutics and former chairman of biotech lobby group BIO, said he would be alarmed if Kennedy was given oversight over vaccines, and that other executives had also expressed concern. “Vaccine denialism, which is a central plank of RFK’s, is perhaps as dangerous as anything you can imagine,” he said, adding that President Trump’s previous appointments for the COVID vaccine effort and the FDA suggest to him that more moderate positions will win out. Some executives also were concerned that Kennedy’s influence could harm the U.S.’s reputation and ability to review new drugs.

ountry should impose tariffs on chips coming into the country, especially from Taiwan’s TSMC.

Tariffs also would sharply raise costs for the renewable energy industries in the U.S., which rely heavily on Chinese components. “Trump actions without Congressional backing could include import tariffs of 10-20% (ex China), 60%-200% on Chinese imports which could impact the cost of renewable projects, particularly solar and storage projects,” according to an October research note from Bernstein.

And then there is the question of China’s retaliation. It is the world’s biggest soy importer and pork consumer, but it has diversified its food supply base since Trump’s tariffs in his first administration. Moreover, China failed to fully comply with an agreement to buy more U.S. agricultural goods that it signed with Trump in January 2020. Trump has vowed in his second term to impose 60% duties on imports from China, raising concerns that Beijing will retaliate by reducing imports of U.S. farm products.

OIL: DRILL BABY DRILL – BUT NOT IRAN

The United States is already the world’s biggest oil and gas producer, but Trump wants to clear away remaining obstacles. He’ll lift a freeze on new liquefied natural gas export permits, expand federal drilling auctions, speed up new pipeline permitting and try to reverse or weaken regulations aimed at cutting power plant and auto emissions. Trump’s support for the oil and gas industry could also lead him to temper his opposition to the Inflation Reduction Act, since oil companies are receiving some funding from it for carbon-free endeavors like carbon capture and sequestration.

The big oil policy wildcard is how Trump will treat rival exporters, including Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. It is likely that Trump would relieve sanctions on Russian energy, but leave in place those on Iran, said Ed Hirs, an energy fellow at the University of Houston. Jesse Jones, an analyst with consulting firm Energy Aspects, expects even more. “We think that the impact of a Trump administration returning to a maximum pressure campaign on Iran could lead to a million barrel per day decrease in Iranian crude exports,” he said.

LABOR UNIONS

Organized labor made great strides under President Joe Biden, who joined a picket line with U.S. auto workers. The UAW wants to expand and in future strikes the federal government could be asked to intervene in a way that undercuts worker bargaining power, something Democrats have so far declined to do.

Republicans have typically been unfriendly to unions, but Trump has played a different game, reaching out to blue-collar workers. Strong support among many union workers may pressure Trump to protect those voters, said Anthony Miyazaki, a marketing professor at Florida International University. Still, his record of appointing leaders to the National Labor Relations Board resulted in a roll back of workers’ rights to form unions. If this cycle repeats, it could potentially reverse the gains unions have made since the pandemic, including successful organizing efforts at Starbucks and Amazon and other fledgling movements at Apple, REI and Trader Joe’s.

OTHER TOPICS INCLUDE:

FINANCE

Within banking, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and other lenders will likely enjoy a reprieve from stiff capital hikes, M&A hoop-jumping, and Biden’s “junk fees” crackdown. Trump is expected to quickly install industry-friendly Republicans at the financial regulators. But those gains may be offset if Trump follows through on tax and trade policies that will widen the deficit and fuel inflation, in turn boosting lending rates. That could push existing loans into the red, say analysts.

ANTITRUST AND TECH

Trump may walk back the Department of Justice’s bid to break up Alphabet’s Google and prefer settling with companies over competition issues in mergers, rather than new trials, attorneys said. The nation’s tough, top merger cop, Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan, is almost certainly headed for the door. More bro[...]

Where Europe, US stand on slavery reparations

ilippe reaffirmed in 2022 his regrets for the exploitation, racism and acts of violence during his country’s colonisation of the Democratic Republic of Congo, but stopped short of formally apologising.

By some estimates, killings, famine and disease caused the deaths of up to 10 million Congolese during just the first 23 years of Belgium’s rule from 1885 to 1960, when King Leopold II ruled the Congo Free State as a personal fiefdom.

Belgium has traditionally said little about colonialism, and the subject has not been extensively taught in Belgian schools.

During anti-racism protests sparked in 2020 by the police killing in the United States of George Floyd, demonstrators targeted statues of King Leopold II.

In 2020, a parliament-ordered commission examined Belgium’s colonial past, which also included the occupation of Rwanda and Burundi. It did not reach a conclusion on reparations. SPAIN

Public debate on reparations is marginal in Spain but representatives of several NGOs have called for it, from the Spanish government and from companies and private fortunes that benefited from slavery and colonisation.

In 2019, then-Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador sent a letter to Spain’s King Felipe and Pope Francis requesting they apologise to Mexico’s indigenous peoples for abuses committed during the Spanish conquest. Madrid did not reply but said it “firmly rejected” its content.

On Oct. 14, Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro said that his country, along with other Latin American nations, intended to “make a profound claim” for Spain to pay reparations for “the theft and plundering of our lands as well as the slavery and suffering endured by our indigenous and African grandparents”. UNITED STATES

At the federal level, a proposal to create a commission to study what reparations might look like has been stalled in Congress for 35 years.

California state legislators passed bills addressing the legacy of slavery and racial discrimination but Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed last month the most ambitious of the reparations proposals.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson said the country “strongly supports” the U.N. Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, which has called for the creation of an international tribunal on reparations.

President Joe Biden said in 2021 he supported a study on whether descendants of enslaved people in the United States should receive reparations.

northern Gaza has fuelled fears among Palestinians that Israeli forces are clearing the area in order to create a buffer zone for the military after the war or to pave the way for the return of settlers who left Gaza in 2005.

Israel has denied such plans and accuses Hamas of hindering the evacuation of civilians to provide cover for its own forces, which Hamas, in turn, denies.

al solutions grounded in international law. “If Russia succeeds in its illegal and brutal war, the repercussions will go beyond Europe, threatening global security and prosperity,” Scholz warned.

The German Chancellor emphasized that the Indo-Pacific remains a region of concern due to maritime disputes and potential flashpoints, including the South and East China Seas. “We need to uphold international law and the principles of the UN Charter,” Scholz added.

Earlier in the day, Scholz and PM held bilateral talks at the Prime Minister’s residence, discussing a range of issues that would further enhance the India-Germany relationship. In a post on X PM said, “Welcomed my friend, Chancellor Scholz, to my residence in New Delhi. Glad to meet him and discuss various issues that will add momentum to the India-Germany friendship.”

This visit marks Scholz’s third trip to India since becoming Chancellor in 2021. He had previously visited in February 2023 for a state visit and in September for the G20 Summit. Scholz’s delegation was warmly received on Thursday by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai upon their arrival in New Delhi.

With several MoUs and agreements signed during the IGC meeting, PM Modi reaffirmed that the relationship between India and Germany is poised for further growth. “India is working on the needs of the future world, and with Germany as a trusted partner, the possibilities are immense,” he said.

ica reported on the deaths of two Black mothers, Amber Thurman and Candi Miller, who were denied medical treatment after experiencing complications linked to medication abortions.

Harris spoke about the deaths at a campaign rally in Atlanta days later, saying that Thurman would be alive today if she had not waited 20 hours at the hospital for post-abortion care.

Since spring, Naomi Desta-Bell and her colleagues at the Feminist Women’s Health Center, a clinic in suburban Atlanta offering contraception, abortion, gender-affirming care and other services, have spent their weekends doing voter registration at arts, music and LGBTQ festivals. They’ve also partnered with churches.

Desta-Bell said she’s found growing interest from voters about the state of Black maternal health and reproductive justice. “There’s a lot of passion here.”

egina Davis Moss, who heads the coalition, said the groups have made more than 1 million voter contacts, targeting young voters, the LGBTQ community and low-propensity voters.

She did not provide a figure for total number of new voter registrations.

Since her ascension to the top of the ticket in July, Harris has given more prominence to abortion than Joe Biden. She has called on Congress to enact a national law codifying abortion access, and end a procedural rule requiring a supermajority in the Senate to pass legislation.

“The previous candidate was not as outspoken,” Davis Moss said.

The Harris campaign highlighted Black maternal mortality on a “Reproductive Freedom” bus tour in September and during a roundtable discussion in Michigan with Harris’ sister, Maya.

On Saturday, U.S. Representative Nikema Williams, along with healthcare providers and public figures joined the Harris campaign and the Georgia Democratic Party in Atlanta for an event to discuss Black maternal health and abortion bans.

When asked, the Harris campaign did not point to specific policies on Black maternal health.

But during her time in the Senate, Harris was an original sponsor of the 2020 Momnibus Act, a package of 13 measures aimed at expanding access to prenatal and postpartum care for mothers. She also supported funding research into uterine fibroids, which are more prevalent among Black women.

And the Biden administration last year allocated $470 million to improve maternal health, expanding access to healthy food and adequate housing, and funding student loan plans and scholarships to increase the diversity of certified midwives and nurses.

“I’d be very curious if anybody could mention another vice president who has made Black maternal health a priority,” said Keisha Lance Bottoms, a former mayor of Atlanta and a senior advisor to the Harris campaign.

On the campaign trail, Trump has taken credit for appointing judges to the Supreme Court who voted to overturn abortion rights. Trump expressed support for a ballot measure in his home state of Florida to overturn a six-week abortion ban and enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, only to later reverse course.

Janiyah Thomas, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign said in a statement that the former president “has always made the health and safety of Black mothers a priority.”

She noted that in 2018 Trump signed into law a measure that authorized $60 million over five years to set up review committees of medical professionals and government health officials to investigate the causes of maternal deaths, particularly among women of color.

HARRIS FACES RISKS

However, some experts believe Harris faces a challenge juggling two different constituencies – for abortion rights and for maternal mortality.

Dr. Nadia Brown, director of the women and gender studies program at Georgetown University, said that white women and Black women historically have different approaches to abortion rights and reproductive health care.

“You won’t find Black women saying I’m voting because I want to try enshrine abortion rights, but rather, you would get Black women talking about, I’m voting because I understand that there’s a lot of attacks on bodily autonomy, and I want to be able to protect that and thinking about healthcare as a human right — as a dignity.”

And Dr. Joyce Drayton, a board member for the Georgia Black Republican Council, said that many Republican Black women – while opposed to abortion – would welcome stronger comments from Harris on improving outcomes for Black mothers.

“We have absolutely no problem working across the aisle” on improving perinatal health care in rural Georgia, Drayton said.

In the election battleground state of Georgia, which banned abortion after six-weeks in July 2022, the issue of Black maternal mortality has converged with abortion rights.

The state Supreme Court in Georgia this month reaffirmed the ban after it was overturned by a lower court.

Last month, ProPubl[...]

h began firing rockets at Israel in support of its Hamas ally on Oct. 8, is the target of Israel’s intensifying assault on Lebanon, which has killed more than 2,000 people and displaced 1.2 million.

Israel has now killed several of Hamas’ top leaders and in a matter of weeks decapitated the Hezbollah leadership , mainly through air strikes.

The killings have dealt a blow to what anti-Israeli forces call the Axis of Resistance: a group of proxy militant groups that Iran has spent decades supporting across the region.

Iran showed no sign Sinwar’s killing would shift its support. “The spirit of resistance will be strengthened,” its mission to the United Nations said.

Hezbollah was also defiant, announcing “the transition to a new and escalating phase in the confrontation with Israel”.

The Israeli military said on Friday it had also killed Muhammad Hassin Ramal, Hezbollah’s commander of the Tayibe area in southern Lebanon.

Families of Israeli hostages said that while the killing of Sinwar was an achievement, it would not be complete while captives are still in Gaza.

Avi Marciano, father of Noa Marciano, who was killed in captivity by Hamas, told Israeli broadcaster KAN that “the monster, the one who took her from me, who had the blood of all our daughters on his hands, finally met the gates of hell.”
