* In the near future, if you are trying to sell an ERC20 that allows offline approvals, then the ETH needed to pay for allowing your funds to be spent is not needed anymore, making the trading experience fully gasless. Keep in mind that this is only possible with ERC20 tokens that have such functionality; if not, you will need ETH to execute the approval transaction only.

CoW Protocol uses a batch auction mechanism to establish the same price of any token pair in the same block. Here’s how it works:

● Traders submit their orders to the CoW Protocol.

● The orders are batched together into groups of similar trades.

● A solver is then used to find the best price for each batch of trades.

● The trades in each batch are then settled at the same price.

CoW Swap has introduced a revolutionary approach to trading: A delegated trading model through an Order Flow Auction that runs on “batch auctions” to find the best settlement for all the trades.

When using batch auctions, traders submit their intent to trade a particular token pair without having to settle their raw Ethereum trades directly on-chain, as the solvers (auction settlers) will be the ones creating the transaction for them. This innovative approach means that traders don’t have to fine-tune their own trading parameters — such as what liquidity pools to use and what slippage to set — all while enjoying better prices and MEV protection.

There are 4 main steps to an order on CoW Protocol:

• Users express their trade intents by signing messages that specify the assets and amounts they want to trade, alongside other parameters.
• The protocol gathers the intents of multiple users into a batch auction.
• Solvers have a set amount of time to propose settlements for the batch. The solver that is able to generate the highest amount of surplus for the batch is declared the winner.
• The winning solver submits the batch transaction on-chain on behalf of the users.

Why is CoW Swap able to offer gasless trades?

CoW Swap is able to offer gasless trades because the orders are submitted off-chain via signed messages. Once you approve your funds for spending on the dapp, you can submit orders via signed messages that contain the trade’s details, such as limit price, amount, timestamp, and so on.

Do I need ETH to trade?
You first need to approve your funds for spending on the dapp*. For that action, you need ETH to pay for gas fees. Once you have done this, ETH is no longer required as CoW Swap charges the fee from the sell token.

Does CoW Swap & CoW Protocol have a token?

Yes, CoW DAO originally launched the, vCOW which is the non-transferable governance token that powers the CoW Protocol, but per CIP-5 the token became transferable and is known as COW

At launch the token was a pure virtual token for governance meaning that the token was not transferrable. This implies that the token will not be transferable. The token entitles its holders with voting rights in the CoW DAO. It was up to CoW DAO to vote on whether making the token transferable complies with applicable laws.

The token's main purpose is to govern and curate essential infrastructure components of the CoW Protocol ecosystem. Per CIP5, CoW DAO holders decided to enable the swapping of vCOW tokens into COW tokens. COW is a standard ERC-20 token which can be transferred and traded freely.

CoW Protocol

The protocol relies on third parties known as "solvers" to find the best execution paths for trade intents — signed messages that specify conditions for executing transaction on Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains.

Upon first receiving a user intent, the protocol groups it alongside other intents in a batch. When executing trade intents, solvers first try to find a Coincidence of Wants (CoW) within the existing batch to offer an optimal price over any on-chain liquidity. If the protocol does not find a CoW, the solvers search all available on-chain and off-chain liquidity to find the best price for a set of trade intents within a batch.

Liquidity sources include:

AMMs (e.g. Uniswap, Sushiswap, Balancer, Curve, etc.)
DEX Aggregators (e.g. 1inch, Paraswap, Matcha, etc.)
Private Market Makers

The wide range of liquidity that solvers tap into makes CoW Protocol a meta-DEX aggregator, or an aggregator of aggregators.
