THE REUNION OF THE MAGI
---
The Bible is silent concerning the names of the wisemen who visited the Child Jesus and how many they were. But tradition tells us that they were three: Melchior of Persia, Gaspar of India, and Balthazar of Arabiaโ€ฆ and they are honored as saints. Legends say that after evading King Herod, the three went home to their respective countries. But legends also say that after more than 50 years after their visit to Jesus, the three reunited somewhere in Armenia and there, they celebrated Christmas.

Chalk-Blessing the House is a Catholic tradition done every Feast of the Epiphany or every January 6. EXTRACTION OF PATRON FOR THE YEAR
---
A tradition mainly Franciscan, but that is also found in other religious institutes and with the laity, the extraction of a patron saint for the year is a beautiful and meaningful activity. Usually, this happens on the feast of the Epiphany. The community gets together and all are invited to prayer to ask God for the protection of a saint who is then drawn at random as special patron for the new year. For every person is given a small holy picture with the name written on the back of a saint who became from that moment his patron for the year.

JANUARY 5: GOD MANIFESTED HIMSELF
The Epiphany of the Lord
---
On this day, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. The term epiphany came from the Greek word โ€œepiphรกneia,โ€ meaning manifestation or appearance. It commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child, and thus Jesus Christ's physical manifestation to the Gentiles. This is why people usually call this feast the โ€œThree Kings.โ€ The Church used to celebrate this feast every January 6.

There is an order to be observed in the practice of charity: between persons loved and the goods which are loved in them. In our love of persons to be observed is the following: to love God above all else, then ourselves and our neighbour in third place. We are not bound to love our neighbours equally but in proportion to their proximity to God and to ourselves. Charity derives from two sources-God and ourselves. The nearer anything is to either of these principles, so much greater must be our love of it. This refers to our reverence and appreciation and not necessarily to our feelings. Thus a son must have greater regard for a saintly person than for his own wicked father, but not necessarily possess greater feelings of love for that person. The order to be observed in our love of persons is: spouse, children, parents, siblings, relatives, friends and benefactors. The order between the objects loved is one's own spiritual welfare, the spiritual welfare of the neighbor, our bodily welfare, bodily welfare of the neighbor, external goods.

Charity is a virtue infused by God enabling man to love God for his own sake as the supreme good, and himself and his neighbor for God's sake. Charity must be supernatural, efficacious, and appreciate God above everything. Charity is supernatural in every respect, both in its object and in its source. Charity must be effective, and therefore the mere affectation of charity (affective charity) is not sufficient. Thus, we are warned: "Let us show our love by the true test of action, not by taking phrases on our lips" (1 Jn 3:18). Charity must show the highest appreciation for God (not necessarily the highest intensity)โ€”that is to say, we must prize God more highly than all creatures, so that we are prepared to lose the whole world rather than the friendship of God.

The Prohibition of Work on Sundays and Holydays
Divine Positive Law commands rest from all forms of servile work one day each week for the purpose of giving praise to the Creator. Servile work is mainly bodily activity, its immediate purpose is the welfare of the body, and was formerly done by slaves (eg. farm work, sewing, mechanical work). The nature of servile work is not determined by intention or fatigue involved or if wages are received but solely by the nature of the work itself which remains servile even if done for charity or recreation.
Theologians distinguish servile work from cultural, ordinary and judicial/commercial work. Servile and judicial/commercial work is forbidden because it prevents man from giving attention to the worship of God.
Ordinary work is that which is done by all classes indiscriminately chiefly for daily sustenance.
Cultural work is the product chiefly of the mind and directed towards its development and is still permitted even if energy is lost or wages earned.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to point out that some people decided to stray from the pro-life movement's strategy in a critical moment, and they will now attempt to take credit for tonight's momentous victory.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

If you suspect that you or someone you know is experiencing demonic obsession or possession there are a couple things you can do:
pray to God asking for protection, have a mass said or hear mass for the intention of deliverance from the evil one, make use of the sacramentals of the church in your daily life, ask your parish priest to do a minor exorcism, write to your diocese with what has been happening to you, repent and do penance for sin in your life, cut out all occult practices, forgive your enemies and most importantly go to confession.

There are two great apps with specific prayers for protection: the Catholic Exorcism App and the Auxilium Christianorum app

THE REAL HALLOWEEN
---
The name 'Halloween' comes from "All Hallows' Eve", being the evening before the Christian holy days of All Hallows' Day (All Saints' Day) on 1 November and All Souls' Day on 2 November. These three days are collectively called Allhallowtide and are a time for honoring the saints and praying for recently-departed souls who have yet to reach Heaven. Hence, the true character of Halloween is not about celebrating monsters, ghouls, and evil spirits nor is it about wearing inappropriate and sometimes lustful costumes. Halloween is about celebrating the saints.

Happy All Saintsโ€™ Day! This special feast, celebrated on November 1st, honors all the saints in heavenโ€”both those formally canonized and the countless others known only to God. Itโ€™s a day for us to celebrate the lives of holy men and women from every age, culture, and background, who lived lives of profound faith, courage, and virtue.

All Saintsโ€™ Day reminds us that sainthood isnโ€™t reserved for a few but is the calling of every Christian. We are invited to follow their example, embracing our faith deeply and living out Godโ€™s love in our own unique ways. As we honor these saints, let us remember that they intercede for us, inspiring and supporting us on our journey toward heaven.

Letโ€™s take a moment today to pray: All you holy men and women, pray for us, that we may follow your path to eternal joy.

Prayer is infallibly heard by God as a consequence of his promises which he gratuitously gave to men. This is evident from many texts in Sacred Scripture "Ask, and the gift will come; seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door shall be opened to you. Everyone that asks, will receive; that seeks, will find; that knocks, will have the door opened to him" (Mt 7:7โ€”8). "Believe Me, you have only to make any request of the Father in My name, and He will grant it to you" (Jn 16:23).

In this post, in response to many requests for advice in chat, I have decided to compose what I hope will be the ultimate (albeit abridged) Catholic guide relating to tattooing:

1. No tattoo should ever risk religious unacceptability; cross tattoos are acceptable and at times encouraged. However, avoid tribal tattoos and other ink foreign to our traditions.
2. Avoid tattoos that are imprudent and will look bad in the future; likewise, avoid any other sexual or imprudent tattoos that your future spouse may dislike. (Note: Catholic marriages are permanent.)
3. Consider the health implications of the tattooing method used; do not obtain a tattoo using a method that may be injurious to your health in any way.
4. Obtain tattoos that are aesthetic and desirable, such as the hakenkreuz. Avoid banal, regrettable designs.

While unacceptable in the Protestant tradition, tattoos have always been acceptable for Roman Catholics and have only been condemned when pagan "tribal" tattoos have been fashionable.

A good charitable and pious work to substitute for Friday abstinence is to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

We can all help the poor suffering souls in Purgatory even more by following the advice in this booklet by Fr Paul O'Sullivan, and by sharing what we learn from reading it.

โ€œIt is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.โ€ - 2 Maccabees 12:46

The effects of prayer is that it merits an increase of grace and glory, it makes satisfaction for sins, enlightening of the intellect, increases faith, hope, charity, humility and other virtues and can give spiritual consolation. The sinner who prays disposes himself to receive sanctifying grace, habituates him to good works and can obtain temporal goods from God.
