Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Selective Bargain Hunting

The FBM KLCI crept back above the 1,600 psychological level today after a 2 days slump. Utilities, healthcare and selected Telco (MAXIS) led the rebound. Broad market sentiment remained bearish with investors’ focus on selected counters. Some glove stocks posted a reversal today as well after seeing profit taking for 3 consecutive days. Rounding off the week, investors should look out for the US payrolls data tonight at 9.30pm for clues on the market’s general direction on Monday.

With the fragmented interest seen in the market today, investors looking to trade may want to consider ECOWLD (Estimated Resistance: MYR 2.50; Stop Loss: MYR 1.95) as a potential trade idea. Our analysts believe that the stock is on the verge of a bullish continuation as the price action tested its current high multiple times. For a detailed breakdown, check out today’s Traders’ Almanac video above.

M+ Market update – 10Jan25
State-Specific Thematic Focus

The local front continued to close on a negative tone, with YTL-related counters dragging the key index lower. Meanwhile, equity markets in the US were closed in observance of the passing of former US President Jimmy Carter. As the time of writing, Wall Street futures are down, and traders are shifting their attention to the December nonfarm payrolls due later today. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil traded above USD77 level amid declining US inventories. Gold prices are hovering along the USD2670 level, while CPO prices have fallen below RM4,300.

Sector Focus: As Wall Street futures slides, this could spillover to stocks on the local front. However, we believe the market will focus on state-specific thematic plays; (i) Sarawak - PM Anwar’s proposal to position Sarawak as Malaysia’s energy hub is expected to drive further developments in the state, benefiting East Malaysia-related counters, (ii) Penang - the commencement of six water projects in Penang, worth over RM1.8bn, alongside the start of the Penang LRT project, is expected to boost the Penang-related counters and (iii) Johor - the formalisation of the JSSEZ, coupled with ongoing FDI inflows and data center investments in Johor, is anticipated to benefit the Johor-related counters.

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Blue Chip Profit Taking; Interest in Tech

The FBM KLCI kick started the year with some profit taking in most blue chips that rallied into the 2024 close. Broad market sentiment also favoured the bears. Tech positively stood out today as the most traded sector by value, MMAG (+16%) and CUSCAPI (+11%) were among the notable gainers within the tech sector. Meanwhile energy stocks also gained on a small rise in crude oil prices.

With focus on the Tech sector today, investors looking to invest in the sector may want to consider VTC (Estimated resistance: MYR 0.600; Stop loss: MYR 0.465) as a potential trade idea. Our technical analyst suggests that a potential bullish breakout is possible, with the stock having closed right at the neckline of its double bottom pattern with increased volume and up trending RSI. For more info on the stock, check out today’s Traders’ Almanac video above!

M+ Market update – 2Jan25
Data Center Theme Remains Relevant

The local bourse traded positively, extending its six-day winning streak on the final trading day of 2024, driven by a surge in buying interest during the second session. However, the Nasdaq continued to weigh on Wall Street sentiment, as losses persisted following the Fed’s move to temper expectations of imminent rate cuts. Traders will also keep track of key economic data, including US unemployment claims and the ISM Manufacturing PMI. In the commodities market, buying interest was seen in Brent crude oil, hovering above USD74 after data showed China’s manufacturing activity expanded in December. Gold price traded sideways along USD2620. CPO prices retreated below RM4,500 mark.

Sector Focus: The local front is set to open lower, tracking the weaker tone of the overnight US market, which may cap the upside for the Technology sector for now. Meanwhile, we favour the O&G sector, given the rebound in Brent crude oil prices, and maintain a positive outlook on Glove stocks as the ringgit continues to hover around RM4.47/USD. Looking ahead, we anticipate a potential surge in Construction, Building Materials and Utilities earnings, driven by data center investments.

Utility: JTGROUP, *UUE*

M+ Market update – 27Dec24
Window Dressing Activities To Persist

The local bourse continued to trade higher, as buying interest was seen across the blue-chip stocks, lifting the KLCI index. In the US, Wall Street closed mixed in thin trade following the Christmas holiday. The weekly US jobless claims data released yesterday came out at 219k, lower than most of the economists’ expectation of 224k, signalling stronger employment market. Meanwhile, traders will also continue to keep track on the crude oil inventories later today. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil ended slightly lower at USD73.26 per barrel. Gold prices traded flat around USD2,630, while CPO prices continued to stay above the RM4,500 mark.

Sector Focus: With the proposed electricity tariff hike by TNB starting July next year, traders may find trading opportunities in the Utilities sector. On top of that, as TNB was being shortlisted to develop a 500MW solar plant in Kedah under the LSS5 programme, along with the government's recent removal of the 85% demand cap under the self-consumption (SelCo) programme, it presents further upside opportunities in the solar-related counters. Finally, improved employment data in the US, which might lead to Fed to remain its hawkish tone, is likely to benefit the local Technology stocks.

Stocks to watch:

Technology: *EG*, *JCY*, *NATGATE*, NOTION
Building Material/ Utility: JTGROUP, MNHLDG, *SCGBHD*, SMRT, *UUE*
Construction: MITRA

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Sideways Consolidation Continues

The FBM KLCI rebounded back into the green towards midday as heavy weight industrial and banking counters supported the index. Broad market continues to remain on the side of the bears, but the industrial index stood out positively. Within the space, PCHEM outperformed despite its recent earnings announcement, while SUNWAY continues to tear higher. Overall market trade volume saw a spike compared to yesterday’s midday break.

Following some observations within the glove space yesterday, a couple of glove related counters were picked up by our technical analysts today. For investors looking to trade the sector, consider checking out TOPGLOV (Estimated Resistance: MYR1.38; Stop Loss: MYR1.07) and KOSSAN (Estimated Resistance: MYR2.92; Stop Loss: MYR2.29) as potential trade ideas. More info in today’s Traders’ Almanac video.

M+ Market update – 21Nov24
Focusing On Earnings And Window Dressing

The FBMKLCI failed to hold above the 1,600 mark for the second consecutive day, closing lower at 1,598.18, weighed down by banking heavyweights. In the US, Wall Street ended on a muted note, and US futures remained flat following NVIDIA’s earnings announcement as the revenue forecast fell short of expectations, suggesting that its rapid growth may be nearing its limits. Meanwhile, traders will continue to monitor several key events like the (i) US existing home sales, (ii) initial jobless claims, and (iii) Eurozone consumer confidence index. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil traded along USD73. Gold prices surged past the USD2,600 mark, while CPO prices retreated further below the RM4,800 psychological level.

Sector Focus: As the year-end holiday season approaches, we remain bullish on the tourism and aviation industries, supported by the momentum in AAX and CAPITALA. The escalation of the Ukraine-Russia conflict may create opportunities in gold-related stocks, while a stronger USD, coupled with potential tariffs from the Trump administration, continues to favour export-oriented sectors such as Technology and Gloves. Additionally, we are optimistic about the Construction, Property, and Building Materials sectors, which may experience earnings momentum growth driven by data center investments earlier this year.

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Market Jitters Return

The FBM KLCI experienced some weakness today as the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict overshadowed NVIDIA’s earnings early tomorrow morning. Laggards outpaced gainers in the broad market as well. The telco & media sector index was carried today by CDB, as the counter printed another green candle for a 3rd straight day. Meanwhile health care was held up by HARTA, KOSSAN & TOPGLOV pushing higher from their Aug/Sep lows.

As stocks within the gloves space continue to grind higher, investors bullish on the sector’s outlook may want to consider checking out HARTA (Target price: MYR4.31) as a potential trade idea. Our analysts see the counter as the primary beneficiary of higher tariffs imposed by the US on China glove makers. For more info on the stock, check out our latest HARTA report on your Maybank Trade MY app.

M+ Market update – 20Nov24
Attention Turns to Corporate Earnings

The FBMKLCI posted a small decline due to a last-minute selldown amid profit-taking activities in banking heavyweights. In the US, geopolitical headlines related to Ukraine initially exerted selling pressure on equities, but stocks quickly rebounded and ended the day higher as investors anticipate NVIDIA’s earnings announcement tomorrow. Besides, traders will monitor several key events, including: (i) China’s loan prime rate decisions, (ii) UK’s October CPI, (iii) US crude oil inventory levels, and (iv) initial jobless claims in the US. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil traded around USD73 following news from the International Atomic Energy Agency that Iran agreed to halt the production of near bomb-grade uranium, albeit geopolitical tensions remain elevated. Gold prices surged past the USD2,600 mark, while CPO prices rebounded near the RM5,000 psychological level.

Sector Focus: With the USD remaining elevated, coupled with potential tariffs from the Trump administration, we remain optimistic about local export-oriented segments, particularly Technology and Glove. Meanwhile, we favour the Construction, Property, and Building Materials sectors, supported by increased data center investments that could drive earnings momentum this season. In the tourism sector, we see rising momentum in both AAX and CAPITALA.

M+ Market Wrap - 15Nov24

FBM KLCI: 1,592.44 pts (-8.24pts, -0.51%)
The FBMKLCI (-0.51%) slid as Consumer Products & Services heavyweights, notably MRDIY (-28.0 sen) contributed to selling pressure on the local bourse; the decline was mainly due to softer earnings, amid the absence of the festive season and the removal of diesel subsidies, which weighed down consumer sentiment. In line with economists’ estimates, Malaysia’s GDP grew by 5.3% YoY, reflecting robust domestic investments, higher exports, and expansion in consumer spending. Market breadth was negative, with 577 losers compared to 389 gainers. On the broader market, Property (+0.49%) gained the most, led by ECOWLD (+5.0 sen) and IOIPG (+2.0 sen).

Top 3 Active stocks:
METRO (0329): RM0.255 (+0.5 sen)

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Powell Sparks Caution

The FBM KLCI fell back below the psychological 1,600 level today after last night’s US PPI print prompted expectations of no potential US Fed rate cut in December. The broad market sang the same tune with bears in control. A positive within the construction sector, IJM clocked in a 2% gain potentially on prospects of a RM6bil flood tunnel job with GAMUDA. Defensive sectors (Financials and REITs) continued to hold steady after the recent drop.

After the recent pullback in the financial sector, investors who were previously looking to enter might want to consider some of our analysts’s buy rated picks like ABMB (Target Price: MYR 5.30; FY25E Dividend Yield: 5.2%). Our analysts recently upgraded the stock to a buy rating on a higher CY25E price-to-book valuation. For more info, check out the full report on your Maybank Trade MY app.

M+ Market update – 15Nov24
Revisiting The Technology and Glove Sectors

The FBMKLCI retreated as gains in the Energy sector were offset by losses in Industrial Products & Services; the latter declined due to China’s latest fiscal measures, which fell short of market expectations and pressured aluminium prices lower. Meanwhile, the US Producer Price Index (PPI) met expectations, with both PPI and Core PPI posting a monthly increase of 0.2%-0.3%. Consequently, Wall Street closed in negative territory, with the Nasdaq experiencing the largest decline. Today, traders will closely watch (i) Retail Sales and (ii) Q3 2024 Malaysia GDP data. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil hovered around USD72, weighed down by OPEC+ demand forecasts. Gold prices retreated further to USD2,566 as the dollar gained strength, while CPO prices traded below the RM5,000 psychological level, with a slowdown in exports impacting vegetable oil prices.

Sector Focus: In light of a strong dollar environment and expectations of a slower rate-cut cycle, we believe investors may revisit the Technology and Glove sectors. Also, the breakout in KGB due to strong earnings and positive prospects offers upside potential for AI-driven stocks. Selected stocks in the Construction, Property, and Building Materials sectors are also expected to report stronger earnings, supported by ongoing data center investments.

Construction: *INTA*, SUNCON

SENFONG: Set for rebound

At RM1.02, SFH is trading at an undemanding 10.5x FY25F P/E (-1SD below its 2-year average P/E and at a substantial 46% discount to the average P/E of Indian tire manufacturers at 19.7x), coupled with an attractive dividend yield of 5.7%. The combination of undemanding valuation and attractive dividend yield should cushion further downside, in our view.

M+ Market update – 12Nov24
Funds Flowing Into Wall Street and Dollar

The FBMKLCI began the week on a softer note amid a lack of fresh catalysts environment, while selected weaker corporate earnings contributed to the selling pressure on the local bourse. The US stock market, however, advanced further on the back of Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election. This week, market participants will focus on key economic indicators, including: (i) CPI, (ii) PPI, (iii) Retail Sales and Core Retail Sales, and (iv) 3Q2024 Malaysia GDP data. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil fell to USD 71 per barrel as investors digested China’s latest stimulus plan. Meanwhile, gold prices retreated further to USD 2,619. Meanwhile, the CPO prices continued to surge, closing above the RM 5,100 level.

Sector Focus: With the US markets continuing to rise, coupled with a strengthening USD, we believe buying interest may extend to the local bourse, particularly in the export-related sectors like Technology and Glove. Meanwhile, we anticipate that the supply of vegetable oil is likely to tighten amid the implementation of higher biodiesel mandates in Indonesia, which will benefit local plantations like JPG following the strong CPO price. Also, selected Construction and Building Materials stocks are expected to gain momentum in the earnings season, supported by ongoing data center investments.

M+ Market update – 21Oct24
Positive Budget May Boost Market Sentiment

Wall Street ended on a positive note following Netflix’s stronger-than-expected Q3 earnings. We believe that the strong performance in the technology sector, combined with positive sentiment from Budget 2025, may provide buying support in the local market. This week, traders will be closely watching the following key events: (i) US unemployment claims, (ii) Flash manufacturing and services PMI, (iii) durable goods orders, and (iv) consumer sentiment reports. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil continues to trend lower due to weaker demand forecasts from OPEC and the IEA, as well as easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Meanwhile, gold prices surged toward record highs. CPO prices remained within the RM4,250-4,300 range, continuing their upward trend.

Sector Focus: Following Budget 2025, we expect buying support to extend in the Construction and Property sectors, particularly the latter due to property tax relief initiatives. We also favour the Utilities sector, as more green-related initiatives were highlighted in Budget 2025, leading to potential trades in the renewable energy and sub-utilities segments. Additionally, with increased emphasis and investment in the semiconductor and E&E sectors, we expect buying interest in the technology sector. Finally, we see potential in stocks linked to Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak.

Building Material: *CMSB*, SCGBHD
Construction: *PESONA*
