Bumping into people I know!

Since I saw this movie, "Bridge of Spies" recently, I've been wanting to write about what jumped out at me about it.

In this movie, Tom Hanks (I know, I know) plays an attorney tasked with defending an alleged Soviet/Russian/German spy who got caught by the U.S.

Much of the first part of the story highlights the pressure he got from not just everybody in the community around him, but also his family, who couldn't comprehend the idea that anyone would, could, or especially should actually defend a spy from a foreign land. As they realized that he had every intention of not just playing along with the show of "defense", but actually defending the man (ie. the enemy), that intense pressure increased. His family's safety and his career were seriously threatened. Couldn't he just let the spy hang, and get on with his life, as the rest of America would happily allow him to do?

What would you have done? What would you do, are doing now? Do you comprehend the most important, fundamental aspects of what it is to be American? Tom Hanks' character did.

In this scene, I want you to focus on the questions he asks starting at 2:25 in:

"Shouldn't we, by giving him the full benefit of the rights that define our system of government show this man who we are--who We are? Is that not the greatest weapon we have in this cold war? Will we stand by our cause less resolutely in our cause then he stands by his?"

In other words, we think we are "better" than he is, but he's just us, and honorably so, from another direction, except for this.

In America, EVERYBODY gets a fair shake. EVERYBODY gets "due process". This includes everybody you HATE, everybody you distrust, everybody you see as an enemy, a traitor, a vile scumbag, etc. This has less to do with how you feel about someone or whether or not you think/believe they are/are not guilty of an alleged crime. It is about our fundamental (and Godly) principles we MUST stand on if we truly believe in what makes America "better" than every other country in the world.

You cannot just believe in it, and act on it, when it is convenient, or feels right, or suits your political or social, etc goals.

And if you truly believe that we are "all God's children", you have to treat everybody with the same "fair shake" in the court of law. Stand by due process, despite any consequences.

In this story, standing on those principles brings later benefits that no one could have expected. Do your part, and let God do his. But don't just say you "are American" and then not mean it by refusing to act like a true American when it comes to the hard stuff.

Officials with the DNR recently assessed 1,200 acres of public trust land in Otsego County near a major power transmission line to decide whether it was suitable for solar arrays. Agency leaders ultimately decided to lease 35% of that land to accompany other adjacent solar projects already in the works....

A public notice advertising competitive bidding for solar proposals on 420 acres of state land in Otsego County’s Hayes Township is expected to be published in coming days in both the Gaylord newspaper and on the DNR website, confirmed Scott Whitcomb, DNR director of public lands office.

He said the DNR will schedule a public hearing if requested by local governments and enough members of the public.

Honoring the Savior

While Israel was waiting for a Savior, far away to the east, three men studied stars and ancient texts. Translated in Scripture as “wise men” or “magi,” these men, likely from Babylon or Persia, came to find Jesus. Why? Because they had seen a star. They had seen a sign in the heavens that a King had been born.

So they set off. In what must have been a long and demanding journey, they sought Jesus out. They had to worship the one who the signs pointed to. They had to see Him for themselves.

What a beautiful illustration of devotion and honor. Israel knew to be watching for a coming Savior, but these men from the East did not. Yet they came to find the one whom the signs pointed to. And when they saw Him, they recognized Him immediately. Then they bowed down and worshiped.

Their story reminds us a simple fact that we often forget: it’s always worth it to seek Jesus. The good news of the Christ is for everyone.

And when they finally met Jesus, the wise men’s  response was to worship and give gifts. This act of worship wasn’t just a formality, either. Each of those gifts had unique meaning and purpose, from an expression of profound reverence and recognition of Jesus' kingship (gold), His divinity (frankincense), and His eventual suffering and death (myrrh). These gifts were not only valuable but deeply symbolic, highlighting their understanding of who Jesus was and would become.

The wise men worshiped Jesus because He was worthy. He still is. How will you worship Him today?
