Kuwait suspends services to thousands for failing to submit biometric data

Kuwait has forced more than a million citizens to hand over their biometric data in one of the most extreme measures in favour of digital ID. Kuwait has introduced an electronic national identity card (eID) that it says will help with ID verification, digital signature, access to e-government and secure data exchange. The deadline to apply for this mandatory programme was 30 September and the consequences for failing to comply were swift.
On 1 October, the Ministry of Interior announced that those who did not submit their data would be banned from all electronic services such as withdrawals, transfers and account transfers. Cash cannot even be withdrawn. Around 35,000 people have their bank accounts blocked and cannot even check the balance. A few weeks later, the electronic bank cards of those who fail to comply are deactivated. Visa, MasterCard and K-Net followed the government's rule.
Starting November 1, the Kuwait Banking Association said it will apply a "total freeze" to all accounts, meaning that you won't even be able to withdraw funds if you go to the bank in person. Expatriates have until December 31 to submit their biometric registration.

The government has reported an increase of 6,000 new registrants a day, up from 600 since it began blocking citizens' access to their own bank accounts.
The government has called it a "gradual approach," believing it has offered leniency to the public.
The issue is that governments around the world are strapped for cash and think they can increase their revenues by at least 35% by chasing their citizens for taxes.
