M+ Market Update – 15Jan25
Focus Returns to Domestic and Stronger Dollar Catalysts

The local bourse continued its sell-off, dragged down by Utilities and Construction heavyweights. While US PPI data came in softer, Wall Street closed mixed ahead of another inflation data release tonight, where we foresee softer data would indicate easing inflationary pressure, in turn boosting the sentiment in both global and local markets. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil retreated due to profit-taking, trading around USD79/barrel, while gold rebounded to USD2,670/ounce after the softer PPI data. CPO prices hovering around RM4,450, closing the gap from the previous day's trading session.

Sector Focus: Despite Brent oil retreated on profit-taking, we believe the recent announcement of Yinson receiving USD1bn in CapEx could lift sentiment in the Energy sector. With the recent announcement from President Biden limiting AI chip exports to Malaysia, which may cap the upside on the Technology sector, we see trading opportunities in the oversold EMS, OSAT, and ATE players, benefiting from the 'stronger for longer' dollar outlook. Besides, we expect buying opportunities to emerge in the Construction sector, as there are still several packages yet to be announced after Gamuda won the Penang LRT contract, while Property players with large landbanks in Johor could benefit from the JSSEZ initiatives.

M+ Market update – 8Jan25
ITMAX Securing Penang Contract

The local front rebounded after its 3-day losing streak, with strong buying interest seen across the Construction sector led by GAMUDA. In the US, all the 3 major indices closed lower, as ISM services data showed an acceleration, raising concerns about persistent inflation and reducing expectations for rate cuts in 2025 (from 2 rate cuts to 1). In terms of key economic data, traders will also keep track on the (i) Eurozone PPI, (ii) China CPI and (iii) US jobs report this week. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil continued its upward momentum and closed above the USD77, while the gold price traded flat around the USD2,650. Meanwhile, the CPO prices showed marginal gains but still trading below the RM4,400 mark.

Sector Focus: With ITMAX securing an RM11.8m CCTV contract from the Penang City Council, we believe trading opportunities will persist in ITMAX; Penang is also ITMAX’s third local council customer, besides Johor and KL. Meanwhile, we are also bullish on e-invoicing-related counters, as taxpayers with an annual turnover or revenue of more than RM25m to RM100m will have to subscribe to e-invoice service starting 1st January 2025. Lastly, with the formalisation of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, we are optimistic towards the Johor-related counters.

*JSSEZ - 1+1 > 2: Harnessing the Multiplier Effect*
https://mplusonline.com/research-report/detail/661

• We believe the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JSSEZ) will generate strong synergies moving forward. Furthermore, it will enhance the region's competitiveness within ASEAN, potentially attracting increased foreign direct investments.
• Drawing inspiration from successful models such as Shenzhen and Suzhou, we believe the JSSEZ will follow a similar concept, creating a wide range of opportunities within various investment themes. In our view, it will drive growth in the Construction, Property, Utilities, Building Materials, and Technology sectors

Stocks that could benefit under these sectors:-
Construction: GAMUDA, IJM, SUNCON, BNASTRA, SSB8

M+ Market update – 30Dec24
Positive Closing Amid Window Dressing Activities

The local front gained momentum, buoyed by buying support in Utilities heavyweights like Tenaga Nasional after the tariff hike proposition for 2H25 onwards and year-end window dressing activities. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Technology heavyweights weighed down sentiment on Wall Street in the final stretch of the year. This week, traders will keep track of the key economic data like the US Unemployment Claims and the ISM Manufacturing PMI. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil traded within a tight range of USD73 per barrel, while gold fluctuated between USD2,610- $2,640, both remained negative biased. However, CPO prices rebounded strongly, closing above the 4,600 mark.

Sector Focus: While the local front is set to open lower, tracking the weaker tone of the overnight US market, we see trading opportunities arising in solar-related counters after TNB was shortlisted to develop a 500MW solar plant in Kedah under the LSS5 programme. Meanwhile, we maintain a positive outlook on export-oriented sectors like Technology and Gloves, which are likely to benefit from an elevated USD environment. For a more conservative play, we believe Healthcare and Consumer Products and Services will provide stability amid year-end fluctuations, as the window dressing activities may persist.

*1Q25 Market Chat: Riding The Data Center Flywheel*
https://mplusonline.com/research-report/detail/650

• Donald Trump “ELITES” assembles could be a wild card for the US economic outlook. However, we expect persistent tariffs, imposing on China, corporate tax cuts, and reduced government spending going forward.
• Dollar index will be elevated at least for the near term, which will benefit export-driven sectors like Technology and Gloves in Malaysia.
• Moreover, we expect the data center and AI theme will continue as the investments from MNCs has just started in 2023-2024, and will book earnings going into 2025 onwards. Thus, we favour stocks in the Construction, Building Materials, Property, Utilities.
• Besides, we like selected O&G, Finance and Renewable Energy stocks, the latter will be riding on the NETR blueprint and electric tariff hike by the TNB recently.

M+ Market update – 26Dec24
Export Stocks To Pick Up Amid Elevated USD

The local bourse traded higher, surpassing the 1,600 level, as buying interest was observed across blue-chip stocks during the window-dressing period. In the US, Wall Street continued its upward trend on Christmas Eve, led by tech stocks, including a 7.4% surge in TESLA and gains of more than 1% in both AMAZON and META. Meanwhile, traders will keep an eye on key economic data, such as initial jobless claims later today and crude oil inventories on Friday. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil ended higher, closing above the USD73 level. Gold prices steadied around USD2,610-2,620, while CPO prices finally rebounded above the RM4,500 mark.

Sector Focus: With the slight rebound in crude oil prices, traders may focus on O&G-related counters ahead of the US crude oil inventories data release this Friday. Additionally, as the government has removed the 85% demand cap under the self-consumption (SelCo) program and allowed solar installations on land and water starting January 2025, traders can look for opportunities in solar-related companies. We remain optimistic about the data center value chain industries within the Construction, Building Materials, Technology, and Utilities sectors. Furthermore, the market is likely to favour Technology stocks amid the weakening ringgit bias.

Stocks to watch:

Technology: *CORAZA*, FRONTKN, *JCY*, *NOTION*
Building Material: MINOX, MTEC, SCGBHD
Construction: *PRTASCO*, WCT
Logistics: *WPRTS*

M+ Market update – 21Nov24
Focusing On Earnings And Window Dressing

The FBMKLCI failed to hold above the 1,600 mark for the second consecutive day, closing lower at 1,598.18, weighed down by banking heavyweights. In the US, Wall Street ended on a muted note, and US futures remained flat following NVIDIA’s earnings announcement as the revenue forecast fell short of expectations, suggesting that its rapid growth may be nearing its limits. Meanwhile, traders will continue to monitor several key events like the (i) US existing home sales, (ii) initial jobless claims, and (iii) Eurozone consumer confidence index. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil traded along USD73. Gold prices surged past the USD2,600 mark, while CPO prices retreated further below the RM4,800 psychological level.

Sector Focus: As the year-end holiday season approaches, we remain bullish on the tourism and aviation industries, supported by the momentum in AAX and CAPITALA. The escalation of the Ukraine-Russia conflict may create opportunities in gold-related stocks, while a stronger USD, coupled with potential tariffs from the Trump administration, continues to favour export-oriented sectors such as Technology and Gloves. Additionally, we are optimistic about the Construction, Property, and Building Materials sectors, which may experience earnings momentum growth driven by data center investments earlier this year.

Stocks to watch:

Technology: *CLOUDPT*, HTPADU, *INFOTEC*, KGB, *NOTION*
Construction: *GAMUDA*, INTA
O&G: *ARMADA*
Finance: RCECAP
Building Material: SCGBHD

FBM KLCI: 1,600.68 pts (-10.82pts, -0.67%)

The FBMKLCI (-0.67%) saw a pullback, as the index was dragged down by selling pressure in Industrial Products & Services heavyweights, notably PMETAL (-19.0 sen). The decline was due to China’s latest fiscal measures falling short of market expectations, which pressured aluminum prices lower. Market breadth was negative, with 586 losers compared to 419 gainers. However, buying interest was noticed in Energy (+0.70%) after DAYANG (+9.0 sen) won two more contracts to provide pan-Malaysia services to Petronas and its production sharing contractors, while Construction (-0.87%) declined the most.

M+ Market update – 15Nov24
Revisiting The Technology and Glove Sectors

The FBMKLCI retreated as gains in the Energy sector were offset by losses in Industrial Products & Services; the latter declined due to China’s latest fiscal measures, which fell short of market expectations and pressured aluminium prices lower. Meanwhile, the US Producer Price Index (PPI) met expectations, with both PPI and Core PPI posting a monthly increase of 0.2%-0.3%. Consequently, Wall Street closed in negative territory, with the Nasdaq experiencing the largest decline. Today, traders will closely watch (i) Retail Sales and (ii) Q3 2024 Malaysia GDP data. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil hovered around USD72, weighed down by OPEC+ demand forecasts. Gold prices retreated further to USD2,566 as the dollar gained strength, while CPO prices traded below the RM5,000 psychological level, with a slowdown in exports impacting vegetable oil prices.

Sector Focus: In light of a strong dollar environment and expectations of a slower rate-cut cycle, we believe investors may revisit the Technology and Glove sectors. Also, the breakout in KGB due to strong earnings and positive prospects offers upside potential for AI-driven stocks. Selected stocks in the Construction, Property, and Building Materials sectors are also expected to report stronger earnings, supported by ongoing data center investments.

FBM KLCI: 1,621.24 pts (-2.04pts, -0.13%)
While the interest rate spread between the US and Malaysia reduced, easing the pressure on the ringgit, the FBMKLCI (-0.13%) closed on a negative note as selected Banking heavyweights, namely MAYBANK (-8.0 sen) and PBBANK (-1.0 sen), contributed to the weaker sentiment on the local bourse. Despite Brent crude oil retreated to USD74 per barrel, the Energy sector (+0.74%) gained the most, led by DIALOG (+12.0 sen) and ARMADA (+1.0 sen). M+ Market update – 11Nov24
Shifting The Focus To Earnings Season

Last Friday, the Malaysian ringgit strengthened slightly as the FOMC meeting concluded with a 25 bps rate cut, while the KLCI ended softer. Meanwhile, Wall Street closed on a positive note, reaching new highs after Donald Trump’s second presidential win. Looking ahead, traders will closely monitor inflation and retail sales data, which could dictate the outcome in upcoming FOMC meetings; the probability of a 25 bps cut in the December FOMC has declined to 84.9% (from 64.9%). In the commodity markets, Brent oil prices fell below USD73 per barrel as fears of prolonged supply disruptions from a hurricane in the US Gulf of Mexico eased. Meanwhile, gold prices retreated to around USD2,684, and CPO surged above the RM5,100 level.

Sector Focus: Despite the slight rebound in the ringgit, we believe Technology stocks could gain momentum, tracking the US move, but the upside may be limited in due to PIE’s earnings. We also favour stocks within the Shipping industry as AGX experienced a breakout last week. In view of the strong rally in CPO prices, we suggest that investors to focus on the Plantation sector heading into earnings season and 1Q25. Also, selected Construction and Building Materials stocks are expected to post stronger earnings, supported by ongoing data center investments.
Stocks to watch:

M+ Market update – 21Oct24
Positive Budget May Boost Market Sentiment

Wall Street ended on a positive note following Netflix’s stronger-than-expected Q3 earnings. We believe that the strong performance in the technology sector, combined with positive sentiment from Budget 2025, may provide buying support in the local market. This week, traders will be closely watching the following key events: (i) US unemployment claims, (ii) Flash manufacturing and services PMI, (iii) durable goods orders, and (iv) consumer sentiment reports. In the commodities market, Brent crude oil continues to trend lower due to weaker demand forecasts from OPEC and the IEA, as well as easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Meanwhile, gold prices surged toward record highs. CPO prices remained within the RM4,250-4,300 range, continuing their upward trend.

Sector Focus: Following Budget 2025, we expect buying support to extend in the Construction and Property sectors, particularly the latter due to property tax relief initiatives. We also favour the Utilities sector, as more green-related initiatives were highlighted in Budget 2025, leading to potential trades in the renewable energy and sub-utilities segments. Additionally, with increased emphasis and investment in the semiconductor and E&E sectors, we expect buying interest in the technology sector. Finally, we see potential in stocks linked to Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak.

Stocks to watch:

Technology: *HTPADU*, NATGATE
Building Material: *CMSB*, SCGBHD
Construction: *PESONA*
Consumer: *LHI*
Property: *ECOWLD*
Plantation: JTIASA
O&G: GASMSIA
