𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗮 - 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆

Sadhguru: When I say pranayama, people tend to translate it in English as a breathing technique or a breathing exercise, which it is not. “Prana” means “the vital energy”, “yama” means to gain control over that. So, it is a subtle process through which one can gain control over his inner energies. These processes are taught in their depth because transforming inner energies are very important to stabilize the body and the mind.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮?

Whatever you do in life, how your body, your mind, and your whole system function is ultimately determined by your prana. Prana is an intelligent energy. Since prana has the karmic memory of the individual imprinted on it, it functions in each person in a unique manner. By contrast, electricity does not have memory or intelligence. It can light up a light bulb, run a camera, and do a million other things, not because of its intelligence but because of the particular device that it powers. In the future, there may be smart electricity too. If you manage to imprint energy with a certain memory, you can make it behave in a certain way.

𝟱 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮

There are five basic manifestations of prana in the body. These pancha vayus – prana vayu, samana vayu, udana vayu, apana vayu, and vyana vayu – direct different aspects of the human mechanism. Through yogic practices like the Shakti Chalana Kriya, you can to take charge of the pancha vayus. If you gain mastery over these five vayus, you will be free from most ailments, particularly psychological ones. This is something that the world needs today.

Unless we act now, in the next fifty years, the number of people who are psychologically imbalanced, disturbed, or deranged will increase many times over, due to various factors in our lifestyles. We are handling many aspects of our lives in a grossly negligent way, for which we are going to pay the price. If you take charge of your prana, whatever the external situation may be, you will remain psychologically balanced. Right now, a whole lot of people are psychologically imbalanced, though not everyone may have a medical diagnosis.

𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀

Suppose your hand does its own thing and pokes you in the eye, scratches, and beats you – that is a sickness. This is what most people’s mind is doing. Every day, it pokes them from inside, makes them cry, bawl, or worry – in so many ways, it creates suffering for them. That means it is sick, even if in a socially accepted manner. Every kind of suffering that human beings are going through day in and day out is created in the mind. This sickness has set in, and it will multiply because of the social structures, the technology around us, and various other influences.

One who takes charge of one’s prana can be one hundred percent assured to have unshakable psychological balance. This should also prevent physiological ailments to a large extent, though an element of risk remains due to various reasons, including infections and all kinds of chemicals and poisons that we are exposed to on a daily basis. There is no absolute control over what we take in through the air, water, and food, no matter how careful we are about what we consume. How much impact it has on us depends upon each individual.

Physiological health cannot be guaranteed one hundred percent for external reasons. But psychological wellbeing can be one hundred percent guaranteed if you take charge of your prana. If you are psychologically in an extremely good place, a few physiological issues will not be a problem. Most of the time, minor bodily conditions are less of an issue than the reactions to them that happen in your mind. How the pranas function within you, how they transact with the rest of the universe, how they enter a newborn, and how they leave the dead, all clearly show they have an intelligence of their own.

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗶 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝘆𝗮 – 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮

It takes a certain level of attention and awareness to know how the five pranas are functioning. The Shakti Chalana Kriya is a fabulous process, but you need to be attentive. It requires you to keep yourself focused for forty to sixty minutes. Most people can’t keep their mind on a full inhalation. Midway, their thoughts wander off, or they lose count or track. It takes months and years of practice to come to a point where you can keep your focus on the breath for the full set of cycles.

That is why Shakti Chalana is always taught in tandem with Shoonya. The Shoonya meditation is to bring yourself to a place where, if you close your eyes, the world is gone in your experience. This is a blessing all of you should earn at some point. Only if you make yourself like this, are you capable of staying focused on something. Forceful concentration is not going to achieve anything.

If you close your eyes, the only things that should exist for you are your breath, your heartbeat, processes in your body, and the workings of your prana. Only what is happening inside is life. What is happening on the outside is just imagery.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆

Shoonya and other sadhana are towards that. How far you go is a different question, especially in today’s world. I am not against what is happening today in terms of life around. But unfortunately, to be flaky has become fashionable – profound is out. With such an attitude, there is no way you can move your attention to how life works within you. This does not mean that it is not possible for every human being – it is. It all depends on what importance you ascribe to it. If you make it your number one priority, everything within you will organize itself accordingly.

If your priorities are in different directions, you will go all over the place, not getting anywhere, in terms of life on a fundamental level. On a social level, you may be getting somewhere. On a physical level, your body is going straight towards the grave – at the most, you can extend the route a little. As far as your mind is concerned, it is going round and round. Only if you focus on the fundamental nature of life will you really get somewhere. The life within you is the only real thing – the rest are just projections. But right now, most of the attention is on projections, not the real thing.

With the Shakti Chalana Kriya, the transformation happens gradually. Taking charge of your prana and its different activities in your system is a fantastic process. The Shakti Chalana Kriya works on that level. If you practice it, you are strengthening the very foundations of your system.

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶 𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗺𝘂𝗱𝗿𝗮 – 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮

The Shambhavi Mahamudra has the potential to let you touch the dimension that is the basis of all that is. But you cannot actively make it happen. You can only set the ambience. We always refer to Shambhavi as “she.” There has to be devotion for Shambhavi to yield. You can only come in touch with the source of creation – there is nothing for you to do with it. Shambhavi also has an element of pranayama in it, which brings many benefits.

The important thing about the Shambhavi Mahamudra is that it is a tool to touch the source of creation, which is beyond prana. This could happen on the first day, or you could be doing it for six months and nothing happens. But if you keep it up, the day will come when you touch this dimension. If you touch it, suddenly everything is transformed.

𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁 : 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲?

The story of Mahabharat is rife with curses and boons. Ever wondered how much energy it takes to curse someone? Is it easier to bless than to curse? Why does the potency of a curse vary, in traditional terms? Discover the answers to all these questions with Sadhguru.

𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙧: Sadhguru, Karna and Parikshit died due to curses. What is the qualification to curse someone? Were the brahmana who cursed Karna or the Yogi’s disciple who cursed Parikshit more powerful than Karna and Parikshit?

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: They say that if a shudra curses you, nothing will happen. If a vaishya curses you, you will miss a meal. If a kshatriya curses you, you may lose your limb or life. If a brahmana curses you, you may lose everything.

𝐖𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥?

Originally, brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya, and shudra were not seen as sects of people who are born in certain families as it is understood today, but as descriptions of qualifications. A shudra was someone who did menial jobs; all he knew was his body. A vaishya was someone who was using his body, and to some extent, his mind. He was largely free of emotion, except for his own family. His body and his calculations ruled his nature. A kshatriya was passionate to the point of involving his life energies. He was more in his heart; otherwise he could not rule or lay down his life for what he believed in.

A vaishya would never sacrifice his life – he would negotiate and make any kind of deal that was necessary. A kshatriya was honor-bound and would rather die than negotiate. For him, a compromise was death. A brahmana was someone who was supposed to have touched Brahman or the ultimate nature within himself. If someone like that cursed you, it would come true for sure.

Karna received curses from two brahmanas. One was a very powerful one; another was an ordinary one, but both of the curses stuck. The second brahmana only cursed him that his chariot wheel would get stuck. Even if his chariot wheel was stuck, had he remembered the mantras*, he still could have killed Arjuna. But the bigger curse was Parashurama’s, which made Karna forget the mantra for his astra* at the right moment.

When Karna’s chariot wheel got stuck, he could have still jumped down and fought. But the problem was that he forgot the mantra. He was trying to remember it while working on the chariot wheel. The more he thought, the more confused he got. That was sure death.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐁𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞?

Whether you curse or bless someone, both ways you are giving away something that you have earned. You have to expend some of the energy that you have built up which is positive for your life. How much a curse or blessing costs depends on how far-reaching it is. This is the reason why if you go to any sage in India, he will first look at you, look away, and say, “Jai Ho.” Very rarely do they look at you and say “Vijayi Bhava”* because that is going to cost much more. “Jai Ho” is for your inner victory, which is a real victory.

This is what they are generally blessing for. That is, if they are really a sage or saint. People who are wearing the uniform, but are actually beggars or businessmen, are a different game. They can do or say anything. If there is nothing in your treasury anyway, you can open it up all the time. When you have something valuable, that is when it matters.

So, the blessing is generally towards spiritual wellbeing. If you have to bless someone towards material wellbeing, it costs much more because it needs to manifest in the physical world. Let us say it costs one unit of energy to bless you towards your inner wellbeing. If I have to bless you to pass an examination for which you have not studied, then it would cost a hundred units of energy.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨 𝐁𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤?

Yogi Re!

02 Dec, 03:39

If you come to me for a blessing for an examination, I will bless you to pass the final exam, not the tenth standard exam. I do not care whether you pass the tenth standard exam or not. I did not care even when I sat for the exam. So, do not come to me for such things. Instead of seeking a blessing for the outer world, it is best to live with grace.

If you live with grace, your own energies will blossom and you can manifest your material life effectively. But if you are a blundering idiot who does not do anything and expects things to happen, then it costs phenomenally for the one who blesses. They cannot withdraw it. Whether it is a blessing or a curse, they have opened up a certain field that cannot be closed suddenly.

How much a blessing costs simply depends upon the intelligence, skill, and dedication of the person who receives it. Suppose I want to ensure that you succeed in some mission that you have taken up, and I bless you. If you are intelligent, skillful, and dedicated towards that mission, it will cost me less. If you are really focused and on, the blessing is just a gentle nudge when you cannot cross some hurdles. But if you receive the blessing and go home and you start doing your own idiotic things, then it will drain me on a daily basis. It costs not only at the time of blessing, but it will continue to cost me even afterwards.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

Both a blessing and a curse will cost, but a curse will cost even more. If I bless you towards what you want, apart from my blessing, you will also work towards it. With a blessing, there is hope that you will work for it. But if I curse you, you will work against it. This costs tenfold more than a blessing because you are trying to work against it, while my energies are trying to work for it.

Karna was cursed to forget his mantras. I am sure he chanted the mantras a thousand times every day to ensure that he would not forget them when he needed them. Karna was determined to see that the curse would not work. But Parashurama was determined to see that the curse would work, so it cost him enormously. Depending upon the determination and skill of the person who is cursed, it may cost phenomenally more than a blessing.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀?

Sadhguru candidly addresses a topic that is perceived as taboo, but can be vitally relevant to one on the spiritual path.

𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙧: How do I get rid of my strong sexual desires?

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: We are always thinking in terms of how to get rid of something. You cannot get rid of anything forcefully. If you try to forcefully drop something, it will pop up in some other way and some other kind of perversion will come up within you. If you try to give it up, it will rule your mind and consciousness completely. But if you find something deeper than what you know right now, that which is of lesser significance will just fall off. Do you see, people who are deeply involved in some intellectual activity, they would rather read a book than have sex.

The reason why you are running after sexuality is because that is the biggest pleasure you know right now. If someone tells you “It is bad, give it up,” are you going to give it up? But if you taste something bigger than that, then does someone have to tell you to give it up? It will just fall by itself. So you just have to invest some time to do the necessary things so that a bigger possibility becomes a reality for you. If you access something much larger, much more pleasurable and much more ecstatic, then naturally small pleasures will drop. You have not given it up, it is just that you do not do that anymore because you have found something much bigger for yourself.

This has happened with so many aspects of your life. Whatever meant the world to you when you were a child, those things dropped off because you found something that you thought was higher. The same holds for this. If you find something of a much deeper intensity, of a much deeper pleasure and ecstasy for yourself, then these things will drop off.
Sexuality is just a small part of you.

People have become overly sexual only because of stupid morality, because they are trying to forcefully drop it. What you call as a man or a woman is just a question of a small physiological difference to serve a certain natural process. Why have we attached so much significance to one body part? No body part is worth giving that kind of importance to. If any part has to get that kind of significance, maybe the brains would qualify, not the genitals.

Unfortunately, it has gotten all reversed because of foolish teachings everywhere saying, “You must be pure, you must not think about this.” People have become full of that and are totally messed up. If people look at life the way it is, sexuality would just fall into its rightful place – just a small place in your life; it would not be such a large aspect. That is how it should be. That is how it is in every creature.

Animals are not thinking about it all the time. When it is there in them, it is there, otherwise they are not constantly thinking who is a man, who is a woman. It is only human beings who are just stuck with it. They are not able to drop it for a moment simply because stupid teachings and morality, which have nothing to do with life, have entered them.

If they look at life the way it is, most people would grow out of it in a very short time. Many people can grow out of it without ever getting into it. Everything is distorted and magnified because of improper focus on life, that’s all. Otherwise, you would see a large percentage of people would not even be interested in it, or their interest would be very casual. It would not be as significant as it is now.

Today, 12th November is Ekadashi - Time to Fast!

𝐈𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮? 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝

Sadhguru: It is important that you don’t fast forcefully. If you observe the natural cycle of the body, there is something called a mandala. The mandala means that every 40 to 48 days, the system goes through a certain cycle. In every cycle, there are three days when your body does not need food. If you are conscious of how your body functions, you will become aware that on these days, your body does not need food. And without effort, you can go without food on that day.

Once in every 11 to 14 days, you may not feel like eating. On that day, you should not eat. You know, even dogs and cats have this awareness? Have you noticed that on particular days, they will not eat? They are aware of their system. On the day the system says “no food,” it is a cleaning-up day, they will not eat. Since you don’t have this awareness, they fixed Ekadashi. Ekadashi comes once in every 14 days in the lunar calendar. At least every 14 days, you could go without food. If you are unable to go without food, if your activity levels are such and you don’t have the necessary sadhana to support you, then you could go on a fruit diet. Just observe your own system, and you may notice that on certain days, you do not really need to eat. Forcing food on those days is not a good thing to do.

Suppose one wants to fast for a certain period, it must always be supported with the right kind of spiritual practices or sadhana. If you forcefully fast without preparing your body and mind sufficiently, you will only cause damage to your health. But if your body is properly prepared, if you are mentally also in a certain state, if you are prepared energy-wise, then fasting can be of much benefit to you.

If you are constantly drinking coffee or tea, then, if you fast, it will become torture for you; fasting will be very difficult. So if you want to fast, first of all prepare the body by eating the right kind of foods. If it is a great torture when you hold back your urge to eat, you will only cause damage to the system. Maybe you are thinking of performing some kind of a feat “I did not eat for three days,” and you want to go and tell that to the whole world. Please don’t do such things. It is of no benefit to you. You will just make yourself weak, that is all. Just understanding the body and coming to a deeper understanding of how the system functions and what is the best thing to do, is more important than doing something like this.

It may not be a good thing for everybody to fast, but it has many benefits if it is done with proper understanding. So finding the right situation for the system and taking off food at that time will be a good thing to do.

𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠

Intermittent fasting is a new name. What we have known by experience in the Yogic sciences, today modern science also is coming in-line with it. Your body and your brain work at their best only when your stomach is empty. We always make sure that we eat in such a way that however much we eat, our stomach must always be empty within two to two-and-a-half hours’ time. For any correction and purification that needs to happen in the body, your stomach needs to be empty. This is very important. Otherwise, the purification on the cellular level will not happen. In Yoga, a minimum of eight hours’ gap between one meal and the next meal is recommended. If you do this, you will see that, whatever health problems you have, a minimum of fifty percent will go away in six weeks’ time.

This was a land where without reason, people sang and danced. This was a land where for every activity in this agricultural society, there was a particular song and dance.

We did not need any reason to celebrate. In our tradition, every day of the year was a celebration. We made work and so many events in life a celebration. This was a very playful nation. Now that economic prosperity slowly increases, it is time to bring back playfulness. I would say in the next five to ten years, we will do much better, economically. But we are getting to a place where, if you want to get a man to dance, you have to get him drunk. This is what Isha is trying to change. We want to bring you to a place where you can dance without reason. It does not matter what other people think. I want the entire nation to become like this that without reason, you can sing, dance, laugh, and celebrate. Life is a good enough reason to celebrate. This is the spirit of Isha Gramotsavam. That is why we have included all the other aspects of rural life. There used to be so many different art forms and forms of celebration in Tamil Nadu. We are trying to keep at least some of them alive in the villages. If common people lose their culture, they lose their heart. A heartless society will not go far. It takes a big heart to push this society forward to a better place.

If we lose the music, dance, and various other skills that our communities used to have, we lose the heart of our culture. It is time to bring them back, especially in rural communities. Otherwise, agriculture in India is a heartbreaking work. No wonder tens of thousands of farmers commit suicide every year. Only with music, dance, celebration, and an absolute sense of involvement with the land, can someone do this. Otherwise, everyone will want to move to the city. If everyone moves to the city, there will be nothing to buy in the supermarkets. Today, the shelves in the air-conditioned supermarkets are full thanks to farmers who are half-starved and on the verge of suicide. It is time we changed their lives. Even if we cannot change the economic situation overnight, we can definitely make them sing and dance, play a game, or throw a ball – do something playful.

For the growth of the children and for the growth of the nation, it is very important that we are playful. Many hardships of life, many horrendous situations in the country can be smoothened out just by making our society a little more playful. The simple process of life can become burdensome and depressing if there is no playfulness. All of you should commit to bringing some sense of playfulness into your homes and lives.

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲

The joy of playing a game is something every human being should experience. Many years ago, when we conceptualized our first fourteen-day Isha Yoga program, we structured it like a game. On the first day, we rubbed in the rules of the game. It is a set of rules which makes the game. It is a certain set of rules which makes it tennis, football, cricket, or some other game. You know the rules are framed by us, but you have to follow them as if they were commandments if you want to play the game well.

If you break the rules, you break the game. This is something that every Indian should know, whether we are driving on the street, or we are conducting our business, or whatever else we are doing. If you break the rules, you break this nation. Nations that have done wonderfully well, for themselves at least, are those who established the rule of law – that means everyone has to go by the law. Here in India, we are still a little ambiguous about the rules. Unfortunately, it is still a question in many people’s minds whether they should follow the rules or not. No rules, no game. You can go to your office half-heartedly. You can do your life half-heartedly. You can get married half-heartedly. But you cannot play a game half-heartedly. You have to throw yourself into it – otherwise there is no game.

You know, Swami Vivekananda said, “You will be nearer to Heaven through football than through the study of the Gita.” When you pray, you can do and think so many other things. But when you kick a ball, you only kick a ball. Otherwise, it will not go where you want it to go. Playing a game gives you the understanding that without absolute involvement, you cannot be successful. You have to play as if your life depends on it. They say 3.2 billion people watched the final of the last football World Cup. This is almost half the world, and the entire adult world. These 3.2 billion people were watching eleven people who were trying to kick the ball in one direction and another eleven people who were trying to kick it in another direction. Of course, you could ask the philosophical question, “What’s the point?” Essentially, we do not watch because of the ball, not even because of the skills, but because someone is kicking the ball as if his life depends on it. It is the intensity of involvement that makes the whole world sit up and watch.

It is intensity which allows a human being to stretch beyond the limits. The entire spiritual process is about somehow transcending your limitations to experience a dimension that you did not know till now. In sports, there are moments when people transcend. This is not limited to the World Cup, Olympics, or other international competitions. It can happen here in the Gramotsavam. People who play with the necessary intensity can transcend the limitations of who they are. This is what sports offer to you. Without the desire to win, there is no game. If your desire is that only you should win, there is no game. This is a fundamental principle that everyone should know, in any sphere of life. You can only be successful if you want to win. But if you lose, it should be alright with you.

If you look at people who have been playing for some time – their attitude towards life and other people, beyond caste, creed, and gender – it has been an evolution. Bring playfulness into your life. You don’t need great sporting equipment – just get a ball. With your child, your wife, your husband, just throw a ball. If you do not have a ball, throw a potato or something else. Don’t think this is ridiculous. Be playful, because without playfulness, there is no celebration in life. You may not be a champion, but you are a sport – that is what matters. It is very important that we become a playful nation. One reason why India has lost its playfulness is because as a formerly occupied nation, having lived in abject poverty for eight to ten generations, we are too survival-oriented to be playful.

𝗗𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲

Sadhguru delves into the true meaning of dharma, explaining the difference between dharma and swadharma, and the importance of establishing oneself in Yoga before getting into action.

Questioner: Namaskaram, Sadhguru. In the Mahabharat, Krishna speaks about swadharma. What is the difference between dharma and swadharma?

𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚: 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐬

Sadhguru: Dharma is not a religion, as it is being portrayed today. Dharma means “the law.” There is an ultimate law that governs all life, animate and inanimate. Swa means “self”; so swadharma is “the law of the self.” It is about the nature of the self, and how it operates. As there are laws of the physical, there is a law of the self. Krishna says that you must live by the laws of the self, not by the physical laws.

If you live by the physical laws, today we may be friends, and tomorrow, something may come up, and we may be fighting. This is happening not just between nations, communities, and societies, but even in the closest relationships – between husband and wife, father and child, and mother and child. Because this is the physical law: you sit there, I sit here; if we feel like it, we will hug. But if we sit on each other’s head, it will not work.

Or, let’s say if a mosquito just sits there, you will probably leave it. But if it starts biting, you will swat it. This is the nature of the physical. Likewise, when Arjuna laments, “How can I kill my brother, my grandfather, and my Guru,” who are on the opposite side of the battle, Krishna tells him, “Your dharma as a warrior is to fight. If you run away, you will be seen as a coward, not a peaceful person. You should have talked peace well before. Now that you are on the battlefield, you will have to kill. This is not your choice or theirs; it is the way of the physical.”

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞

The physical exists with boundaries. If there is a transgression of boundaries, let’s say your enemy crosses a boundary with you, there will be trouble. The same is true with your neighbor, friend, spouse, child, and everyone else in the world. For everyone, there is a boundary, no matter how dear they may be to you. Only when we maintain the boundary, can things work in the physical world. Transgressions of the boundary will trigger violence. It may begin with words, and be followed by pushing, and then chopping. Do not think that it will not happen to you; you will also do it. This is the way of the physical.

Krishna says that if you do not want to struggle with that, you should follow your swadharma, the way of the self where there are no boundaries. Then you can sit here and be everywhere; or you can sit here and be nowhere. That means there will be no transgression; you will not transgress anyone, nor will anyone transgress you. If you experience this, I do not have to tell you to fight a war. But if you live by the physical laws and try to avoid the fight, it will not help; you will still have to fight.

To follow the swadharma, you must turn inward. If you live by the law of the physical, collisions are just a step away. You have to dodge them; otherwise, you will inevitably collide with someone. Every life has their own dharma. What is good for one, may not be good for the other. For a king, there is one dharma; for a warrior, there is another dharma. For a husband, there is one dharma; for a wife, there is another dharma. Parents have one dharma; children have another dharma. These are all different interests, and people’s dharma could clash at any point.

That is why Krishna said, “Yogasthah kuru karmani,” which means, “First establish yourself in Yoga; then act.” Yoga is a dharma, and Yoga means union. First establish yourself in Yoga, then other dharmas, and make it in such a way that you do not clash with others at every point. So, first establish yourself in Yoga before entering into action in the world. When it comes to action, each one of us has a different dharma.

You must craft your dharma in such a way that you can pass through a crowd with the least amount of resistance. Whichever way, there will be some resistance and friction. But if you create too much friction, you will not get anywhere. This is a profound wisdom ingrained in this culture. Even recently, when asked about a conflict happening in the world, one of the political leaders in the country just said one sentence: “This is not an era of war.” Because we are not fighting with sticks or swords; our instruments of war are such that it is no more an era of war. If you try to settle things that way, the friction will burn up everything.

𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐚 – 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚

Right now, people are discussing a possible nuclear conflagration as if it could happen at any moment. If someone makes a couple of mistakes, it could get us in that direction. So, the first thing is to establish yourself in Yoga. Yogic postures are not about building big muscles but about stability. “Sthira sukham asanam” – your asana should be comfortable and stable.

If you do not comprehend cosmic consciousness, you can still understand that all of us have come from the same soil, and we will go back to the same soil. Our bodies are all made of the same building material. You may be experiencing yourself only as a body, but even this body is in unity with everything. All of us are breathing air from the same bubble. Once you are conscious that this is all one, whichever direction you want to go, you will create a dharma that allows you to go through life with the least amount of resistance. This is the swadharma.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝗴𝗮

𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Sadhguru, what is the significance of doing certain practices before sunrise or after sunset?

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Practices like Surya Namaskar and Shiva Namaskar should happen at these times of transition, in the twilight zone between night and day. During the sandhya Kalas, around sunrise and sunset, everything is in a state of flux. If you practice at that time, your ability to transcend limitations is better because your life energies are in a state of flux. That is one aspect of it.

𝐈𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐭? 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞!

Another aspect is that all these practices generate a certain amount of ushna. There is no equivalent for the word “ushna” in English, but it usually gets translated as heat. Heat, not in terms of temperature but as one of three aspects – the other ones being sheeta and pitta – that control various functions in the human system. If you have excess ushna, or in other words, if your samat prana is high, you feel your body is hot, but if you take your temperature, it is normal. Ushna is not like having a fever – it is experiential heat.

Samat prana or samana vayu is in charge of maintaining the warmth of the body. A yogi always wants to keep the body slightly on the warmer side because heat also indicates intensity and dynamism. If the body cools below a certain point, it creates inertia in the system. Almost all the practices are designed to take you to a somewhat higher realm than what people normally live at. A higher realm does not mean a higher level of metabolism. If the metabolism becomes high, you will exhaust yourself physically.

When your energies are in a higher realm, your body will function at an easier pace. We can prove this to you in a matter of three to six weeks – if you do certain practices and get your energies to a certain level, your physiological factors will settle down and go at an easier pace. When your energies are low, your body tends to go at a higher pace to keep the life process going, which will deplete the system. If your bodily functions go at a certain speed, your mind will go crazy, and above all, it will reduce your lifespan.

We are conscious that doing practices will raise the ushna in the system. If the temperature outside is high and the ushna rises beyond a certain point, it will cause cellular damage. That is why yogic practices are always to be done in the cooler hours of the day. Between day and night, there is a transition that reduces the friction within the system, and therefore, the practices will generate less ushna. Because yoga evolved in tropical climates in India, we always said that all yogic practices must happen before 8:30 in the morning or after 4:00 or 4:30 in the evening.

𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐚 & 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

With yogic practices, you are trying to remold yourself. You may have great regard and respect for your parents, but you do not want to end up just the way they made you, or just the way they are. You want to be something different or something more. If you only psychologically and emotionally remold yourself, at some point in your life, you will fall back. There are many people who, when they were 18, said “No way!” and rebelled against their parents, but by the time they are 45, they walk, sit, talk, and behave like them, because mental changes will only go that far.

Attitudinal changes will not last. After some time, as life situations change and you become less conscious, you will fall back. If you say you are the way you are because your father was like that or because it is in your genes, you are saying you are a creature of the past. If you want to be a being of the future, it is necessary to remold the fundamentals of who you are. That is what we are trying to do with yogic practices – we want to remold ourselves into something entirely different.

Yogi Re!

02 Nov, 03:26

The best time of the day to do this is always the sandhya when the energies on the planet are going through a certain transition and the friction within the system is greatly reduced, which allows the remolding to happen more easily. There are other aspects to it, but these are the two most fundamental reasons why yoga is practiced morning and evening.

𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐦𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐚 – 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬

If you are looking for dramatic spiritual progress, you must do your yogic practices before sunrise, which usually means starting the practices at the Brahma Muhurta, which is the last quarter of the night - anywhere between 3:30 a.m. to 5:30 or 6:00 a.m., or whatever is the time of sunrise. At that time, there is a certain process that you will become naturally conscious of if you do your practices in a certain way. If you are doing yogasanas, once your biology adjusts itself to the planet’s biology, every morning, you will wake up by yourself between 3:20 and 3:40.

This is not a confession, but it is supposed to be a matter of pride for me – when I was a little boy, and even when I became a little older, I just could not wake up in the morning, no matter what. It took an hour-long effort from all the family members to wake me up. After some time, they gave up calling me because I anyway slept through all the calling. Since shaking did not work either, they would make me sit up – I would sit up and fall asleep again.

Then they would drag me out of the bed. My mother would put toothpaste on the brush and give it to me. I would stick it in my mouth and sleep off. After I brushed my teeth, she would say, “Bathe before you go to school.” I would go into the bathroom, sit down there, and fall asleep. Once I was awake, you could not stop me, but waking me up was something else. If no one woke me up, I would sleep until noon time. Only when I got too hungry, I would wake up – otherwise, nothing else would wake me up.

I started practicing yoga at the age of 11, and after about 12 to 18 months, it began to happen, and has been so ever since, that when I first wake up and check the time, it is always just before 3:40. I may choose to get up or to lie down again depending upon what time I went to bed, but every day, no matter which time zone I am in, for at least one moment, I am awake at that time, because once you do certain things with your system, your biology is in sync with the biology of the planet. 3:40 is not a time that someone came up with – there is something within the human system that is connected to the planet and will make you come awake.

The Brahma Muhurta is the best time for you to do practices if you want to transcend your physical nature or know dimensions that we refer to as spiritual. But if you are looking just for physical health, then the sandhya kala around sunrise is the best time to do practices.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀

Can keeping a clean house and environment have a deeper impact on your spiritual development? Sadhguru discusses the significance of cleanliness.

As a child, keeping yourself and your surroundings clean was likely a requirement placed on you by parents and other adults. But beyond these societal expectations, can keeping a clean house and environment have a deeper impact on your spiritual development? Sadhguru discusses the significance of keeping clean.

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Shaucha, or cleanliness, is an important aspect of one’s spiritual development. Cleanliness is not just about the body. It is also about our surroundings. Everything that we perceive through our sense organs can either create filth or wellbeing within ourselves.

Whatever we perceive, if it is pleasant upon our senses, we experience it one way. If it is unpleasant upon our senses, that becomes filth in our experience. If our surroundings are not clean, or in other words, if our surroundings are not pleasant upon our senses, then the images that we create in our mind, the projections that happen upon the seat of our experience turn unpleasant. When you create unpleasantness like this, going into blissful states of experience and consciously generating the nature of your experience becomes difficult.

Whether you are miserable or joyful is determined essentially by what you are doing within yourself. A spiritual process essentially means everything that you are, happens consciously – your experience of life is determined by you. If this has to happen, it is important that our sense organs do not perceive something as unpleasant.

𝐀𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐝…

I am sure that in every culture, you have been told at some point – if not by your parents, at least by your grandparents – about how to keep your clothes and bedclothes. In India in particular, they say that if you leave your bed clothes crumpled and unfolded, ghosts will come and gather. When you sleep, they will sleep with you and trouble you. I think in English there is a saying, “As you make your bed, so shall you lie upon it.” This is essentially about the forms around you. Today, scientists tell us that the whole existence is just one energy manifesting itself in a million different ways. As energy has generated forms, forms can in turn generate energy. And every form around you is generating a certain type of energy.

The kind of forms we build, the kind of forms we hold around us and the kind of structures we live in have a phenomenal impact on everything that we are. If there is a little more awareness about the way we sit, the way we arrange ourselves and the way we keep things around us, we can create the spatial arrangement in a way that is conducive to looking inward, and which makes our spiritual process much easier. If you want to drive from point A to point B, you could probably drive through anything, but if a proper road is laid out, you would get there easily. In that context, if the spatial arrangement around us is organized in such a way that it is conducive for inward looking, it will happen much more easily.

𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 – 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗪𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀

Sadhguru looks at the legend behind Naraka Chaturdashi, when Krishna slew the demon Naraka, and explains how this Diwali legend is still relevant to us today.

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Diwali is also known as Naraka Chaturdashi because Naraka requested that his death anniversary should be celebrated. Many people only realize their limitations at the moment of death. If they realize now, life could be improved. But most people wait till the last moment. Naraka is one of them. At the time of his death, he suddenly realized how he wasted his life and what he had been doing with it. So, he requested Krishna, “Today you are not killing only me, but all the wrongs that I did – this must be celebrated.” So you should not celebrate the killing of Naraka’s wrongs, you must celebrate the killing of all the wrongs within you. That is when a real Diwali happens. Otherwise, it is just a lot of expense, oil, and firecrackers.

Naraka came from a good background. The legend says he was the son of Vishnu. But this happened when Vishnu had taken the form of a wild boar, so he had certain tendencies. More than that, Naraka became friends with Mura, who later on became his general. Together they fought many battles and killed thousands of people. Krishna first killed Mura, since there was no way to deal with Naraka if both of them were together. The reason Krishna has the name Murari is because he slew Mura. In the legend, Mura was said to have magical powers in battle, which made him in such a way that nobody could stand against him. Once Mura was taken off, Naraka was more of a ceremony.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐊𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐧𝐚 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚

Naraka was put to death because Krishna saw that if you let him live, he will continue the same way. But if you bring him close to death, he is capable of realizing. Suddenly he realized he unnecessarily gathered too much nasty stuff. So he said, “You are not killing me, you are taking away all my bad stuff. This is a good thing you are doing to me. Everybody should know this. So they must all celebrate the death of all the negativity I gathered because this has brought new light to me and it should bring light to everyone.” So this became the festival of lights. The entire country goes up in light on this day, so you are supposed to burn all your stuff. It is good to do it now. For Naraka, Krishna told him “I am going to kill you.” But for you, no one may tell you – it may just happen.

This happened in Tennessee. A lady went to a gun shop. It is very common in Tennessee for people to go buy new guns periodically. So she went to the gun shop and said, “I want a revolver and a few bullets for my husband.” The shopkeeper asked, “What brand would he like?” She said, “I’ve not told him that I’m going to shoot him.”

When life gets you, it may not tell you. That is why Diwali is a reminder that you can die a conscious death and take on a conscious birth, rather than waiting for someone to shoot you. We don’t know whether a man, woman, bacteria, virus or your own cells will shoot you down. Someone will get us. Better make use of Naraka’s desire to remind everyone that, “I could have made myself into something but I gathered bad stuff and became like this.”

All of us are made of the same stuff but see how differently each one has become. The question is only what the hell are you gathering every day? Are you gathering and manufacturing poison within you or will you manufacture the fragrance of divine within you? This is the choice. This legend about Naraka being of good birth but going bad is significant. At the moment of death Naraka realized, the only difference between Krishna and him is what each had made out of themselves. Krishna made himself godlike, while Naraka made himself into a demon. Each of us has this choice.

If we had no choices, then what is the use of those who have made themselves into shining examples? It is not because a person is lucky or they were born that way. It takes a lot of kneading and breaking to make oneself in a certain way.

Either you wait for life to whip you or you whip yourself into shape – this is the choice. Naraka chose that Krishna should come and whip him. Krishna chose to whip himself into shape. That is a big difference. One gets worshipped as a god, another gets put down as a demon – this is all it is. Either you beat yourself into shape or life will one day beat you into shape – or out of shape, whichever way. Diwali is a reminder of this. Let’s light it up.

So, if you're gone from here, somewhere else, long distance it’s very easy to love me. (Laughs) Yes, very easy to love me long distance, close up it's big trouble. You can sit there and love me, and have regard and respect for me so that your conscience will be settled. Because I want it settled quickly because this is not a very long life, it's a brief life. Handling all this rubbish, when will you get there? Settle it quickly, I have no issue. You can love me or hate me, both ways I have no issue but settle it somehow and focus on what you need to do. But if you've come from elsewhere to here, the same thing goes. You can have as much love and respect for anybody you want. I would say, have that for just about everybody in the world. I've been telling you, if you walk on the street, because I've seen people doing this, they'll be going like this (Gestures walking in arrogance), suddenly somebody say, "Hey, Sadhguru, Sadhguru" (Gestures Sadhguru Coming), (Gestures bowing down in utter devotion) (Laughter/Applause). I say, "Dammit! This is not going to work for you." This is not going to work for you, that if you see Sadhguru, you're like this (Gestures Bowing down in Namaskaram) otherwise you are like this (Gestures walking in arrogance), this is not going to work for. No spiritual path is going to work for you like this.

In some way, you must see the same quality in everybody; man, woman, child, donkey, I'm particularly picking the donkey, donkey, cow, dog, tree, rock; you must... if you really... we are going back to the first question, if you have really sat with him for sure, okay? Then, you must see that in everything. You must treat everything like it's Sadhguru. Then there is no problem. So, where you are, what practice you are doing, when it comes to practices, as I said, now your mother is gone, you are in your aunt's place, you must eat the food that she serves. You can love your mother as much as you want, nobody can stop it. But you must eat and nourish yourself only from the food what your aunt serves. Don't sit there thinking your mother will serve you once again, she will not, and she cannot! So, do not bring such conflicts because it's a brief life.

With all this complications of emotions, where will you go? The fact that you moved somewhere, obviously something did not work for you. Wherever else you've gone, please make it work, at least there. When you were here, you were thinking how to escape. Now you are somewhere else, you are wondering, "Maybe I should have been here." Don't do this. Once you leave a place, wherever the hell you go, make it work there at least. Just don't give up your striving, that's all that matters. When you give up your striving, I'm deeply disappointed with you. Yes! If you go away and your striving is intense, I don't care, it's okay with me. That's less trouble for me (Laughs). Hello? If you are deeply striving and you go away, good for me. If you give up your striving, this (Referring to himself) is wasted life for you, wasted effort for me. Don't do that.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗜 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝘂𝘀?

Does one have to be loyal to one guru or is it okay to follow the methods taught by two different spiritual masters.

𝙎𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙧: "Can a disciple have two masters? In case one is initiated by two spiritual masters, is it advised to stick to one way and one master or practice what is taught by both of them? If I follow one master then does it mean that I'm being disrespectful to the other one, who choose to me initiate me on the path?"

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: (Laughs) Well, being with a guru, or a spiritual master is not a question of loyalty, but it's a question of integrity. What is the difference between loyalty and integrity? Loyalty is coming from certain emotions that you have. Integrity means that you're dedicated to the purpose, for which you are there, any place. You are in some place, what is the purpose of that place, you are absolutely dedicated to that, you will not do something else there. This is happening to lot of you, you came here really to do spiritual sadhana but you're falling in love with somebody, getting married and... (Gestures), all this happening. Something, something will happen. Either you will get headache or you will get backache or you will get a worm in your head or your heart (Gestures) pulsates like that, so many things will happen; life. You don't understand that, deviating from what is the purpose for which you are there is just a question of lack of integrity. Does it mean to say I should not do any of these things? Well, you must make a conscious decision, that's why you have come, to build a life around a spiritual center. It's okay with me. I'm not expecting everybody totally on fire. But you came here with fire and then compromised. That's a little bit of adjusting integrity.

Loyalty is a different thing. Loyalty is not needed in this affair. So, (Laughs) whoever you are, if you are here and you're gone somewhere and you're struggling, please don't struggle, just dump me and wherever you are, just do that. Because the very fact you've gone somewhere, is in some way, for whatever reason, it did not work here. So you gone somewhere, at least there you do well, as long as you grow, what's my problem? Or if you were somewhere and now you're here, and you're struggling here, dump the nonsense that you carried from elsewhere and do what you are required to do here. Because, this is like, you know, there are coconut gardens and mango gardens, you don't go into a coconut grove, take one of these trees and plant it on top of the mountain. It won't last for a month. That's not where it works. It can only work here. Nor will you take a mango tree and plant it in a desert. Not going to work! So, the very fact you moved from one place to other, either by your own choice or some other compulsion or maybe that master is dead, or I'm dead, when it happens. Well, once you find the need to go somewhere, give yourself absolutely there, wherever that is. Because you can't be in this place and dig in that place, it doesn't work like that. Does it mean, you are disrespectful to somebody?

No! See, it's like this, you have a mother, she took care of you well. You loved her immensely. Well, for some reasons, she passed on. Now, your aunt has come, or maybe your wife, or maybe your neighbour or maybe somebody else. Let's say your aunt because other things will evoke emotions, which are not... we cannot settle within this question. Now, your aunt is taking care of you but you love your mother. But you must eat the food that your aunt serves. You cannot eat the food that your mother serves. It doesn't matter how much you cherish her, how much you love her. You can love her, respect her, everything but you must eat your aunt's food. Otherwise you will not be nourished, as simple as that.

Today, October 27 is Ekadashi - Time to fast!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐤𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢?

Today, science has proved that every atom in the human body is actually transacting with the whole cosmic space every moment. So how does the cosmos influence our lives?

The human physiology goes through a cycle called a mandala, approximately every 40 to 48 days. In this cycle, three specific days, which may be different from person to person and need not come with equal spacing, will arise when the body does not demand food. If you identify those days in your life and not give the body food - because it is not asking - alot of your health issues will be handled by simple pattern.

This cycle in the system is something that most people can identify if they take away the nonsense of 'so many calories, so much protein and so much mineral should be eaten.' If they listen to the body, these three days can be easily identified by most human beings. So it was told that three times in those 48 days, you should not eat. This was said because somebody observed his own system, and from that he expressed this. But then people did not have the awareness so they fixed the Ekadashi for not eating. If you look, there are 3 Ekadashis in 48 days. It goes well.

Ekadashi means the 11th day after the full moon and the 11th day after new moon. The reason is because the planet itself is in a certain state on that day. So if we keep our body light and available, our awareness will turn inward. The possibility of opening the door within is more on that day. If you have a full stomach, and you are unaware and dull, you will not notice it. So to stay alert and also to purify the body, you go without food on that day - you ate dinner the previous day and the next thing you eat is dinner on Ekadashi. If you are unable to go without food - you can go on phalahara, or fruit diet, which is light on the stomach so that your inner doors will open. Forceful denial of the food is not the point. The point is to make everything into a conscious process. We do not want to compulsively eat like this, we choose.

In some Indian languages, 'phal' means 'fruit' but 'pal' also means 'many'. So today in South India this has happened that on Ekadashi 'phalahara' means a lot of people have interpreted it as, you do not eat your normal rice and sambar or whatever on that day. Instead, that the day you eat many varieties of food, mostly fried food. That was the day you are supposed to give it a break. Because you could not fast and are not aware, it was said 'Okay at least eat fruit.' Now, because the same word in the language exist in a different meaning people are eating the worst type of food on that day.

Another aspect of the Ekadashi fasting is that when one is on the spiritual path, people usually fall off at the slightest discomfort. So fasting is one simple way of training yourself so that outside situations will not make you go off the track; when you are hungry, instead of going and sleeping, you remain alert and in activity. When you are very hungry, still remaining alert and keeping your focus on the sadhna is a very important part of the training to ensure that outside situations do not take you off the track.

While fasting, if you feel thirsty, drink water. If you feel tired, add a few drops of honey or put a little bit of lemon into the water you are drinking. It will take care of it. Fasting for 24 hours is not very difficult for the body. If your body does not have that much capability, there is something seriously wrong with your system. Any healthy body can forsake food for this period. If the body - not the mind - is going to enormous trouble, can you need a medical check-up. Maybe you are not physically healthy or something is wrong, but if you have mental struggles and vadas and bondas are coming and sitting like asteroids, then you must fast.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱

Sadhguru answers a questions on the nature of fears and insecurities, and how it is us who unconsciously create them.

𝙌: How do I leave behind the many fears and insecurities I have within me and move ahead?

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: You don’t have to leave your fears and insecurities because they don’t really exist. You keep creating them unconsciously. If you don’t create them, they don’t really exist. So your question is essentially about why you create them and how to stop creating them. The fundamental reason why fear has arisen in you is – one way of looking at it is – in this vast existence of which you don’t know the beginning or the end, you are just a little human being. Being the small entity that you are right now, naturally there is fear and insecurity about what will happen to you.

As long as you are identified as a physical body, as long as your experience of life is limited to your physical and mental faculties, fear and insecurity are inevitable. Different people may be at different levels of fear and insecurity. Today, if your life is happening well, you might have forgotten your insecurity. Tomorrow, if your life is turned upside down, you will be reminded because it is always within you. Only when a person begins to experience himself beyond the limitations of his physical body and mind, then this person can become free from insecurity and fear.

Experiencing yourself beyond the physical is what we are referring to as spiritual. When I say spiritual, don’t think it is about going to a temple. If you look at your prayers, 95% of them are either about asking for protection or to be taken care of. There is nothing spiritual about it. It is plain, basic survival. In most people, the very basis of prayer is fear and insecurity. If prayer exists in your life as an act only, it is obscene. If you become prayerful, that’s wonderful, and if you are using an act of prayer towards becoming that quality, that’s fine. But if you are routing your survival through the heavens, that’s very stupid. Even worms and insects take care of their own survival.

When I say spiritual, I am talking about you beginning to experience that which is not physical. Once this spiritual dimension is alive, once you start experiencing yourself beyond the limitations of the physical and the mental, only then there is no such thing as fear. Fear is just the creation of an overactive and out-of-control mind.

𝙌: But Sadhguru, isn’t it very natural and human to become anxious when things don’t go the way we expect them to?

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Why are you making all your incapabilities natural and human? If a few things aren’t going smoothly in my life and if I don’t become anxious about them, if I retain my sense of balance and continue to do what I have to do, would you call me inhuman? When things aren’t going the way you want them to go, that is when your capability is most needed. When you become anxious, do you become more capable or less capable? Less capable, isn’t it? When you most need your capability, you are forsaking it. Would you call that an intelligent way to act? What you are saying is that to live unintelligently is human. That’s a very wrong idea. To live intelligently is what being human is all about.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆

To be creative, do we need to be selfish or selfless? Sadhguru explains, the most beautiful things arise when we live with a sense of abandon.

𝙌: Is art an expression of selflessness, selfishness or self-centeredness?

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Today, because of the disparities in society, we are raising a pitch of things like selflessness and service. These would be of no value to anyone if everyone was doing well. These are important only when someone is down.

I really do not know what selflessness, self-centeredness or selfishness mean, because I do not think anyone has ever clearly defined selfishness. I know spiritual teachers are always talking about it but people have only been deceiving themselves for ages. When your existence here and your perception of people and the world around you is rooted in yourself, how can you be selfless? Nobody can be selfless. If you try, you will only pretend to be selfless.

Tell me, can you do something that is not selfish? “I want all of you to be blissed out” – this is also about “I want.” It is still selfish. A mother takes care of her child not because of selflessness but because of a deep selfishness, because that is what gives her most joy and happiness. Someone is willing to die for his country not out of selflessness but with a very strong sense of selfishness because that is what is going to fulfill him – that is why he does it. And there is nothing wrong with being selfish. It is just that people are generally kanjoos (miserly) about their selfishness. At least in your selfishness, be utterly, absolutely selfish. The best that you want for yourself, you want that for the entire universe. Be totally selfish – “My universe, I want it this way.” This selfishness is fine.

The problem is not of selflessness or selfishness, the problem is of limited boundaries that people set – what is you and what is me. This is what yoga is about. The word “yoga” means “union.” What is you, me, this, that – everything has become one in your experience.

Coming to creativity, if something beautiful has to come out of a human being, the most important thing is a certain sense of abandon – who you are has been forgotten for a moment. That is when you sing beautifully, dance beautifully, paint beautifully, that is when you can do something beautifully. Today, because we have been overtaken by the European mode of doing things, we think of systems all the time. Systems will work, but too much of system will kill you in the end. If you learn to do something with abandon, it may not turn out the same way every time, but there is beauty to your action – not because of the result, simply for the action.

If you have no sense of abandon in your life, you will suffer life after some time. Everywhere, the world has been infected with mindfulness right now. This country has always invested in how to be mindless in your activity, that your mind does not come in. If your mirror is well-polished, you become a reflection of the creator; or at least a reflection of the creation.

𝗦𝗲𝘅: 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗳𝘂𝗹?

Is human sexuality sinful or sacred? There is nothing wrong or right about sex, says Sadhguru, as it is an essential part of physical existence, but with a limited role. He explains that it is important to acknowledge the sexual impulse, but also conduct it responsibly.

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Why are all the desirable things in life either immoral, illegal or fattening? Young people often ask the question, or think about it. Let us look at the first word: “immoral”. Much of the time, people are alluding to sex when they use the word. Sex is a subject on which people spend an incredible amount of thought in a lifetime. A simple biological need has turned into a lifelong obsession for many. Let us understand this: Sex is a simple drive within us, a chemical change that happens with adolescence. It is a pleasurable experience because it is nature’s way to impel us towards reproduction. With time, we have made the reproductive aspect optional, but the pleasure remains. There is nothing right or wrong about it. It is important to accept one’s sexuality as an essential part of physical existence. It is only because two people felt the sexual urge that you and I exist. This is a fact.

The biggest problem is that religions and moral teachers have told us that our biology is a sin. This has created untold guilt and misery down the ages. The more you deny something, it assumes disproportionate importance in the mind. This suppression mode has wrought untold havoc on the human psyche.

At the same time, are we just puppets of our chemistry? Surely not. The role of sex in human life is fine, but essentially limited. Those more focused on the mind find that the drive is less insistent. Once you find pleasures deeper than the mind, sexuality recedes in significance.

𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞

Reacting against traditional religious horror of sex, the West has, in recent times, veered towards an excessive identification with the body. It would be unfortunate to mimic this. Our basic biology is not to be trashed. But it does not need to be glorified either. If you observe your development from childhood to adolescence, it should intrigue you, not rule you. A natural intelligence makes us all aware that we are more than the play of our hormones. Unlike animals, human beings are not at the mercy of their chemistry. The human need for emotional and intellectual companionship is far stronger than the physical need.

Unfortunately, those who allow the hormonal process to dominate their intelligence lose their inner equilibrium. It is a pity that so many young people subjugate their intelligence to what they read and encounter online or at the movies. The result is a standardized response to sexuality, rather than one based on inner awareness and balance. People will continue to speak for and against sexuality. Neither is required. All we need to cultivate is a certain inner equanimity in body and mind, so sexuality naturally finds its place. It is important to acknowledge the sexual impulse, but also to conduct it responsibly.

Some simple yoga can be hugely beneficial if one starts practicing it young, because it harmonizes the body and mind more effectively than any teaching can.

𝗚𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗷𝗮 – 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗲

Sadhguru explains how Guru Pooja is a process of making yourself choiceless, so that the divine also has no choice but to be with you.

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: Guru Pooja is not about offering a flower, a fruit, and a coconut – this is a subtle process to create an invitation to the Divine. There is a difference between meditation and a ritual. Meditation is all your own stuff – it is exclusive. But if we actively participate in a ritual, everyone can be in the same space and enjoy the same thing. If performed properly, a ritual is a vibrant and fabulous tool that supports everyone. A ritual needs integrity, involvement, and inclusiveness. If there is no integrity and inclusiveness in the atmosphere, people can misuse it in so many different ways. So there is a serious risk because generally in the society, there is a lack of integrity and inclusiveness.

Guru Pooja is a tool, a certain method. It is not a thanksgiving ceremony. Yes, there is a sense of gratitude in it, but that is not what it is all about. It is a way of creating a certain sacred energy geometry which will naturally draw certain forces to it. You must do the Guru Pooja in such a way that no matter where I am, I must come. I should not have a choice. This is only possible if you make yourself choiceless.

There is a very beautiful story in the Mahabharat. On a certain day, Krishna was having lunch. Rukmini, his wife, was serving him. Krishna was a man who had taken on the whole world, so he barely got home. The chance of serving him a meal did not come often, even for his wife. It was a privilege that she cherished and valued. Halfway through his meal, he suddenly got up and left without even washing his hands. She said, “Please, at least finish the meal before you go.” He said, “No, one of my devotees is in trouble. I need to go.” He went till the gate, stood there for a moment, turned back and sat down to continue his meal. Rukmini asked, “What happened to your devotee?” He said, “He was sitting in the forest, chanting my name, when a hungry tiger approached him.” Krishna had seen that this man was totally immersed in the chant, calling Krishna with total involvement, and when the tiger approached, immediately Krishna had gotten up and left. He continued, “As I went towards the gate, the fool picked up a stone to protect himself, so I’ll let him do his business.” This is the power of choicelessness.

Guru Pooja is a device for you to make yourself utterly choiceless. All these rituals are just that – you give yourself to a process and make yourself completely choiceless. When you are like that, even the Guru does not have a choice. You need to make it in such a way that the Divine does not have a choice about you. It is from this that many yogis said, maybe in different ways, “Shiva has no choice about whether to be my partner or not.” I have a choice to lose him, but he has no choice. You must always keep him like that because what kind of a fool would consider losing the Divine as a choice? Only someone who has just one brain cell would. If you had two brain cells, you would clearly see that losing him as a partner is not really a choice – it would be utter stupidity.

Guru Pooja is such a tool. You must make it in such a way, the invitation is sent in such a way that he has no choice; he has to be there. If you create such power about simple things that you do, then the benefit of sadhana will multiply manifold.

Today is Karvachauth, a one-day festival celebrated by women in Northern India, in which married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands. On this day stories of Karva and Veervati are recited thus inspiring and instilling devotion in one.

'Karva was deeply devoted to her husband. Her intense love and dedication towards him gave her shakti. While bathing at a river, her husband was caught by a crocodile. Karva bound the crocodile with a cotton yarn and asked Yama (the god of death) to send the crocodile to hell. Yama refused. Karva threatened to curse Yama and destroy him. Yama, afraid of being cursed by Pati-vrat (devoted) wife, sent the crocodile to hell and blessed Karva's husband with long life. Karva and her husband enjoyed many years of wedded bliss.'

'On the other hand, Veervati was a Queen and the only sister of seven loving brothers. She spent her first Karva Chauth as a married woman at her parents' house. She began a strict fast after sunrise but, by evening, was desperately waiting for the moonrise as she suffered severe thirst and hunger. Her seven brothers couldn't bear to see their sister in such distress and created a mirror in a pipal tree that made it look as though the moon had risen. The sister mistook it for the moon and broke her fast.

The moment she ate, word arrived that her husband, the king, was dead. Heartbroken, she wept through the night until her shakti compelled a Goddess to appear and ask why she cried. When the queen explained her distress, the Goddess revealed how she had been tricked by her brothers and instructed her to repeat the Karva Chauth fast with complete devotion. When Veervati repeated the fast, Yama was forced to restore her husband to life.

In a variant of this story, the brothers build a massive fire behind a mountain instead and trick their sister by convincing her that the glow is the moon. She breaks her fast and word arrives that her beloved husband has died. She immediately begins running to her husband's house, which is somewhat distant, and is intercepted by Shiva-Parvati. Parvati reveals the trickery to her, cuts her own little finger to give the wife a few drops of her holy blood, and instructs her to be careful in keeping the complete fast in the future. The wife sprinkles Parvati's blood on her dead husband and, coming back to life, they are reunited.'
