Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, is among the Palestinian prisoners who will be released this coming Saturday, as part of the Gaza ceasefire and exchange deal, according to i24NEWS Arabic.

Dr. Abu Safia has endured severe torture and mistreatment at the hands of Israel after being detained from the hospital in late December. He was kept in solitary confinement for 24 days before being transferred to Ofer Prison, in the occupied West Bank.

Israel detained Dr. Abu Safia under the “unlawful combatant” law instead of a regular trial, claiming that he was affiliated with Hamas, which violates the right to a fair trial by depriving the detainee of knowing the charge and discussing the evidence.

He suffers from an enlarged heart muscle and chronic high blood pressure, and some local sources are reporting that he has lost at least 15 kilos in detention.

According to Israeli Army Radio, Israeli occupation forces have discreetly established a security zone within Syrian territory. This is no longer merely a temporary military presence, as 9 sites are already under advanced construction in southern Syria, including on Mount Hermon, within the occupied buffer zone, and beyond it.

There is currently no set timeline for how long Israel will maintain control over this security zone. Israeli Army Radio reports that the army plans to remain in Syria through 2025 and currently operates three brigades there—an increase from the one and a half battalions stationed before 7 October.

According to Haaretz, the Israeli army has expanded its open-fire orders in the occupied West Bank, making it easier for soldiers to shoot unarmed Palestinians without detaining them. Soldiers told the newspaper that this policy change, led by Central Command head Avi Balut, has directly contributed to the rise in Palestinian civilian deaths. The army denied any change in its rules, but commanders revealed that soldiers were ordered to fire at vehicles leaving combat zones, leading to the killing of unarmed Palestinians.

This comes amid a brutal escalation against Palestinians in the West Bank, where occupation forces are bombing, displacing civilians, killing residents, and destroying the infrastructure of refugee camps in Tubas, Tulkarem, and Jenin.

A day after the abduction of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya by Israeli occupation forces, the military released a propaganda video showing its soldiers treating the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza well.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that Dr. Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, was severely beaten by the Israeli occupation army and used as a human shield before being abducted, with his fate still unknown.

On Friday morning, Israeli occupation forces stormed Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, where they forced patients and medical staff to leave the hospital and abducted others, including Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.
