The masses of people are carried along, obedient to environment; the wills and desires of others stronger than themselves; heredity; suggestion; and other outward causes moving them about like pawns on the chessboard of life. But the masters, rising to the plane above, dominate their moods, characters, qualities, and powers, as well as the environment surrounding them, and become movers instead of pawns. Such people help to play the game of life understandingly, instead of being moved about this way and that way by stronger influences and powers and wills. They use the principle of cause and effect, instead of being used by it. Of course, even the highest are subject to the principle as it manifests on the higher planes, but on the lower planes of activity, they are masters instead of slaves.

During the recent excavations of the Health Temple of Asklepios at Cos, the scene of Hippocrates' labours, a curious cist with a heavy marble lid was discovered. This is believed to have been the place where the priests kept the sacred snakes of Asklepios. In the center of the slab is a hole (see photograph on another page) through which the snakes went out and in. This Ophiseion, or place of the snakes, was let into the floor of a small sanctuary in which an altar of incense is supposed to have stood. There the priests brought their patients to sacrifice, and to offer sacred cakes to the serpents. On the walls were probably engraved health maxims and votive inscriptions of persons who had been cured."--printed on border.

Say what you want about the Theosophists, but over the years their centres have become "safe spaces" for all Esotericists to go and connect.
The libraries in some TS buildings overflow with books donated by previous members and occultists alike who amassed large and rare collections but had no suitable descendents or family members who were interested let alone understood what those tomes contained.

First documentation of the eclipse by Neville Maskelyne, 1900.
The solar eclipse was photographed on May 28, 1900, by the famous magician Neville Maskelyne during a British Astronomical Association expedition to North Carolina. He traveled to India in 1898 to photograph the eclipse, but the film can was stolen. Two years later, Maskelyne was able to repeat his success.
