#OTD in 1977, Iva Toguri D'Aquino became the first and only U.S. citizen convicted of treason to be pardoned. D'Aquino was one of many women known as "Tokyo Rose" who broadcast Japanese propaganda during WWII. Convicted in 1949 despite the DOJ initially determining that her broadcasts were innocuous, she served six years in prison. President Gerald Ford granted her a full and unconditional pardon.

Today, we honored a public servant and Sailor who embodies the true meaning of duty, honor, and loyaltyโ€”qualities instilled by his time at @NavalAcademy. The crew of USS Jimmy Carter will continue to carry his legacy forward with honor, courage, and commitment.

The Joint Force Honor Cordon lined the path into the Washington National Cathedral where family and friends of former President Jimmy Carter attended his states funeral service. The Armed Forces Chorus honored his memory by singing hymns personally selected by his family.

#OTD in 1952, the Marines announced they would be recalling @RedSox great Ted Williams to active duty. Williams had served as a pilot during WWII and would fly another 39 combat missions in Korea, often as future astronaut John Glenn's wingman. He returned to play 8 more seasons.

After the rest of the crew of his tank retriever were killed or wounded during an NVA ambush in 1969, SSgt Harold Riensche had to make a one-man stand. Riensche put up a ferocious defense using an M16 rifle, a .50 caliber machine gun, an M60 machine gun, an M79 grenade launcher, a .45 caliber pistol, and hand grenades until forcing the NVA platoon to retreat. Riensche was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism. #MarineMonday

#OTD in 1941, battleship HMS Barham capsized and exploded within four minues of being hit by three torpedoes fired by U-331. 862 sailors were killed. Miraculously, almost 400 men survived the violent explosion and were rescued. News of the sinking was kept secret for two months.

#OTD in 1944, a modified USAAF P-51D Mustang began carrier trials aboard USS Shangri-La (CV-38). The Army was interested in the possibility of using carrier-based P-51 squadrons to escort B-29 bombers. Unofficially named the Sea Horse, the unique variant of the P-51 performed well during trials but the Army's need for carriers ended when the capture of Iwo Jima provided airfields within range of Japan. The Navy opted not to adopt the Sea Horse because its in-line engine required a liquid coolant whereas the radial engines of Hellcats and Corsairs did not.

The U.S. Navy has confirmed that a wreck discovered last year by the Royal Australian Navy is that of USS Edsall (DD 219). Lost in the Indian Ocean in 1942, the exact fate of the Edsall was unknown until a decade later when captured Japanese film revealed that the destroyer had been sunk after coming under attack by two cruisers, two battleships, and 26 dive bombers from three carriers. A post-war investigation determined that at least six of Edsall's crewmen were captured and executed.

Happy #WorldPianistDay! A unique feature installed on USS Thomas A. Edison in 1961 was a full-sized Steinway piano. The "Submarine Steinway" remained in the crew's mess until the Edison was decommissioned in 1983. The piano is now in the collection of the U.S. Navy Museum.
