✨🇧🇦 Excursion to Russian-Serbian Church in Banja Luka

🕊 UrFU delegation was invited to visit the new Russian-Serbian Church of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers in honor of the last Emperor of Russia Nicolas II and his family (under construction).

🤝 The church is a token of gratitude of Serbian people to the Russian tsar who came to their aid in 1914 and defended them against Austro-Hungarian aggression during the World War I.

The construction of the church should be completed this year and will also include a Cultural Center.

🔎 The excursion was held by the priest Miladin Mitrovic, head of the branch of Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society in the Republic of Srpska. And as the Minister Đokić is also a member of Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society, UrFU delegation gave him a gift from Ekaterinburg branch of IOPS - a calendar "Bible Road Trip. Russian Palestine in Paintings" featuring artworks by Ural artists.

🏗️ Installation of Stained Glass Structures is Almost Completed at the Facilities of the Second Stage of the Campus Construction

The facade insulation has been completed at the facilities of the second stage of the UrFU campus, and the installation of stained glass structures is nearing completion. The buildings are also undergoing roughing and finishing, installation of internal engineering systems, and installation of outdoor lighting.

The layout of each building has been thought out in detail: spacious classrooms and laboratories are built for classes, coworking spaces and atriums filled with natural light are being built for students to communicate. Workers also construct canteens, conference rooms, a library and other necessary facilities.

🇷🇺🇧🇦 Visit of UrFU delegation to Ministry of Scientific and Technological Development and Higher Education of Republic of Srpska

⚙️ During the meeting in Banja Luka, the huge scientific and educational potential of UrFU and some of its advanced technologies developed and already successfully introduced into production were presented to the Minister Željko Budimir.
Among others, Minister Budimir was interested in the Summer University and joint research on demographic and social issues, history and geopolitics, new educational technologies at UrFU.
🚴 Both sides also expressed their intention to develop cooperation between student and youth organizations of the two countries.

🎤 After the meeting, Minister Budimir and UrFU rector Koksharov gave an interview for the Radio Television of Republika Srpska (RTRS) and expressed their mutual interest and commitment to further development of cooperation between UrFU and academic and industrial organizations of RS.

🌌🔭Astrochemists Determined the Ratio of Methane in the Gas and Dust of a Protostar
A team of scientists from the UrFU Laboratory of Astrochemical Research has for the first time analyzed interstellar dust and interstellar gas simultaneously. The amount of methane in gas and dust was determined in the young star-forming region IRAS 23385+6053.

🌟 It was found that methane can be found on the surface of a dust particle surrounded by water and carbon dioxide, with about 15% of all methane in the object being in the gas. The findings help determine the mechanisms of methane formation in interstellar clouds. As the researchers explain, depending on how methane is formed, its ratio in gas and in ice differs.

✍️ The article was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Day of Russian Students, also known as Tatiana’s Day, is celebrated on January 25th each year. The history of this holiday dates back to 1755 when Empress Elizabeth established the first university in Russia - Moscow State University.

Since the date fell on Tatiana’s Day, celebrated in honor of Saint Tatiana, this saint became the patroness of all students and a symbol of education and academic achievements in Russia.

At the end of the academic semester the readers should return borrowed books to the library or extend the loans of textbooks, because according to the rules of use the library charges penalties for late returned books.

📖 It is possible to extend loans online via VK page of the UrFU Scientific Library. You should fill in only one application for one or several books.

🏛 To do that, you need to specify the barcode number from your student ID card, your surname, first name and patronymic (if present), e-mail address for feedback, as well as information about the book(s) to be renewed.

On January 18-19, the Ural Federal University opened its doors for prospective applicants and their parents. The participants learned about university's opportunities, available olympiads, and updated admission rules.

Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies Svetlana Bykova and SCO University Master's students attended an exhibition "1925: 100 years ago" in the "MART" Center of Photography.

📖 The students perused pictures of Moscow, Sverdlovsk, London, Paris, New York, Berlin that show the life of ordinary people, representatives of the creative and political elite in 1925. They also had a chance to look at the photos of renowned authors such as Sergey Esenin, Virginia Woolf and learned about their literary works.

620 places will make up the quota for Mongolian students in 2025-2026 - these are opportunities for free training in Master's, residency and postgraduate studies at Russian universities, the Russian Center for Science and Culture (RCSC) reported.

🏛 This year UrFU plans to increase the number of students in the dual degree program in metallurgy with the branch of Mongolian University of Science and Technology in Erdenet, the third largest city in Mongolia and the most important industrial center. The graduates will be able to work in one of the largest mining companies in Asia.

🏛🏗 UrFU New Campus Construction Updates
Builders are completing the construction of walls and partitions, the steel structures are assembled at the level of 70-75% in the buildings of the Engineering School of Information Technologies, Telecommunications and Control Systems (IRIT-RtF), the Graduate School of Economics and Management (GSEM) and the Specialized Educational and Research Center of UrFU (Lyceum), facade insulation, shell and core and full finishes of the premises are underway.

💻📚 Almost 9 thousand students will be able to study in the new buildings with modern classrooms, laboratories, libraries, conference halls, canteens, co-working spaces, and atrium spaces. All educational and administrative rooms will be filled with natural light during the day due to a large number of stained glass windows.

💼 This week, representatives of the University of East Sarajevo - dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. Goran Marković and associate professor of the Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. Dimitrije Ćeranić – visited UrFU.

📍 The partners were invited by the School of Public Administration and Entrepreneurship (GSEM) and introduced to the Ural Federal University, its educational and scientific potential, as well as to the Russian culture and main attractions of Ekaterinburg.

The 3-day work program included lections for students and negotiations at different UrFU divisions, including the International Office.

🤝 Currently, UrFU School of Public Administration and Entrepreneurship and University of East Sarajevo have been working together on joint research projects and planning development of double-degree programs and academic exchange.

🌍🌟 Do you know what was the highlight of the People's Friendship Festival-2024?
🇷🇺For the first time within the history of the festival, there was a Russian table "Russkoye podvorye" with the participation of a real Ural Cossack.

⚔️ Historically, the Cossacks were a semi-nomadic and semi-militarized people in various Eastern European states. They were allowed a great degree of self-governance in exchange for military service. For centuries, Cossacks were Russia’s legendary fighting force, famous for their fierce fighting skills world-wide. The Cossacks fought to defend the Russia against any manner of enemies – from Ottoman Turks to Napoleon’s Grande Armée, through World Wars I and II.

The National Center "Russia" in Moscow summed up the results of the All-Russian contest "Young Entrepreneur of Russia 2024". For several months, entrepreneurs from all over the country performed tasks, demonstrated their knowledge and defended their business projects at the in-person finals.

🥇Darya Skripkina, a UrFU student, won the "Youth with Ideas" league having entered the top 3 young entrepreneurs of Russia in "International Business".

✍️ She presented a youth project school, a multipurpose platform-assistant for students, including training in project activities, assistance in utilizing support measures from the state, preparation for competitions, grants and scholarships.

In November, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation awarded the laureates of the 11th All-Russian competition for young scientists in the field of arts and culture.

🥇Sakher Al-Tamimi, a UrFU graduate and now a research engineer at the Laboratory of Artistic Practices and Museum Technologies, took first place in the "Architecture and Design" category for his scientific work “The issue of preserving the cultural identity and new functions of the modern mosque”.

🐮🏞 According to Geneticists, Four Subspecies of Wild Aurochs at Once Were the Ancestors of Domestic Cows
A team of scientists, including researchers from Altai State University (Barnaul), the Zoological Institute of the RAS (St. Petersburg), the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the UB RAS and the UrFU, made a discovery while deciphering the structure of the genomes of four dozen aurochs that lived in different regions of Eurasia in the pre-glacial era and during the era of civilization formation.

🐄 The fact that the genetic traces of all these wild bovine populations are well conserved in the genomes of modern cattle speaks in favor of frequent contact between the first domestic cows with local wild aurochs, and also indicates the absence of close inbreeding in the oldest herds of cattle, which allowed the preservation of this genetic diversity.

Kuzma Minin, a Novgorod merchant, and Prince Pozharsky, a Rurikid Prince, led the resistance against two false heirs who wanted to overtake the throne. The city was liberated on November 4, 1612.

UrFU Library has prepared an exhibition of translations and studies of the Bible.

🌍 It is possible to observe translations of one of the most translated and studied books in the history of mankind in Greek, Latin, German, English, French, Swedish and Russian.

The copies of translations were taken from the libraries of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, the Nizhny Tagil factories, the Fan der Flit family and other book collections.

✍️The exhibition also includes the Vulgate and editions of the British Bible Society, translations by Martin Luther and Konstantin Pobedonostsev, the 1670 English edition of the King James Bible and the Port-Royal translation of the French Jansenists of the 17th century.

UrFU Plans to Increase the Number of Mongolian Students 🇲🇳

Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov met with the Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia Sainbuyan Amarsaikhan - Co-Chairman of the Russian-Mongolian Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.

The negotiations in Ulaanbaatar focused on developing cooperation in education and science, including training highly qualified engineers for Mongolia's promising energy, oil and gas, and climate change sectors.

🏛 During the negotiations, Valery Falkov noted that plans are underway to increase the number of students enrolled in the double degree program in metallurgy, which the Ural Federal University is implementing in cooperation with the Erdenet branch of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology. Graduates of the program will be able to find employment at Erdenet, one of the largest mining companies in Asia.

🌋 Exact Date of Largest Volcanic Eruption in 10,000 Years Named
Employees of the Laboratory of Natural Science Methods in Humanities (UrFU) and the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology (UB RAS) have determined the exact date of the largest volcanic eruption in the last 10,000 years.

Based on the analysis of annual rings of semi-fossilized trees in Yamal, the researchers determined that the eruption of the Kikai volcano occurred in 5,283 B.C. This date, the scientists believe, can become a time marker for synchronizing the chronologies of volcanic eruptions obtained by studying other sources.

🖱The study was supported by the Russian Science Foundation (Project No. 23-27-00158). The results are published in the journal Dendrochronologia.

🌍 Connecting Minds, Shaping Futures: The Open Doors Olympiad 🌍
From October 16-19, university representatives from across Russia gathered in Dolgoprudny for an exciting seminar to discuss the future of the prestigious Open Doors Olympiad. Hosted by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, this event brought together experts to plan the 2025-2028 Olympiads.

🏛 UrFU played a key role in shaping discussions on Russian language promotion for foreign students, educational policies, and migration strategies, with active participation from both the Graduate School of Economics and Management and the Ural Institute of Humanities. These institutes play one of the key roles in preparing UrFU for international success, offering expertise in shaping global education initiatives.

Our Vice-Rector Sergey Tushin helped define the roadmap for the Olympiad’s future growth, and we’re proud to announce that 65 talented winners from the 2024 Olympiad will join UrFU under the Russian Government's scholarship program. 🚀
