The operation executed under court orders involved eight suspects, including County Executive Committee Members and Chief Officers accused of misappropriating Ksh 1.2 billion through fraudulent payments made to companies linked to themselves and their families.

Officials also confronted accusations of procurement fraud involving Ksh 373 million for twelve heavy road construction machines and trucks purchased during the 2022/2023 financial year.

KRA is set to link its electronic tax invoice management system (eTIMS) to fuel stations by June 2025 in an effort to curb tax evasion and increase revenues through real-time monitoring of motorists fuel purchases.

Under this new system, every purchase of petrol or diesel will generate an eTIMS receipt, providing the tax authority full visibility of sales across stations, helping eliminate fictitious VAT claims.

Rogue traders have exploited the current system by using unclaimed fuel receipts to seek VAT refunds for business expenses they didn’t actually incur.

This integration will also allow the KRA to track fuel consumption patterns, targeting high spenders with low tax remittance records.
